Broski Royale: Can Ryder leverage his Battle Royal success?

Has Zack Ryder actually usurped Andre the Giant for the title of "King of the Battle Royal"?

Attention, Andre the Giant fans: Zack Ryder is moving in on the WWE Hall of Famer?s territory. No, Ryder is not about to be anointed the new ?Eighth Wonder of the World,??and he?s a ways off from accumulating a 15-year winning streak like the Giant?s. Rather, everybody?s favorite Broski is homing in on one of Andre?s other accolades, the nickname ?The King of the Battle Royal.?

With his Night of Champions Pre-Show victory in a 16-Man Battle Royal (WATCH), Long Island Iced-Z not only earned a crack at U.S. Champion Antonio Cesaro on pay-per-view, but he also notched at least his fourth significant victory in the grueling Battle Royal match format since coming to WWE.

Alongside then?tag team partner Curt Hawkins, Ryder won a five-team Battle Royal on SmackDown in 2007. As a singles competitor two years later, Ryder earned an ECW Title Match by prevailing in a 10-Man Battle Royal. Earlier this year, he won the right to be SmackDown?s General Manager for a week by outlasting 19 other Superstars, and on Sunday, he survived the 16-man melee en route to facing Cesaro.

For someone who is the reigning ?Internet Champion,??Ryder sure was born in the wrong era. Given his proclivity for winning Battle Royals, social media?s most celebrated Superstar is the type of competitor who would have done well competing for the grand jackpot of the famed Battle Royals that took place annually in San Francisco?s Cow Palace in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In WWE, however, Ryder has yet to capitalize on his success in the over-the-top world of Battle Royals. His Tag Team Battle Royal win in 2007 paved the way to a Tag Team Title Match that same night, but Ryder and Hawkins were unable to come out on top. A week after the ECW No. 1 Contender?s Battle Royal, Long Island Iced-Z faced off against ECW Champion Christian and lost. Ryder spearheaded a fine regime on SmackDown as interim GM this year, but that arrangement was designed from the start to be temporary. At Night of Champions, Ryder came up short against Cesaro, though Aksana played no small role in interrupting Ryder?s attempt at a Broski Boot.

Ryder must be doing something right if he keeps winning Battle Royals over much more experienced and more heavily favored Superstars. What is it about Ryder that makes him such a cunning threat in Battle Royals specifically?

Former Elf CEO faces court in Togo

LOME, Togo (AP) ? Loik Le Floch-Prigent, the former chief executive officer of the French oil corporation Elf, was extradited to Togo from Ivory Coast and will soon appear before a High Court judge here on charges of abetment of crime to defraud an Emirati businessman.

The purported scam against Abass Al Youssef was for $48 million. Earlier, the businessman lodged a complaint against Togolese businessman Bertin Sow Agba in the case. Sow Agba is a cousin of former Togolese Interior Minister Pascal Bodjona, who was also arrested after the Emirati businessman implicated him in the scam.

The case has rocked this small West African nation. In early September, hundreds of Bodjona's supporters besieged police headquarters and were dispersed by police firing tear gas. Bodjona has been charged with being an accomplice in the financial scam and has pleaded not guilty.

Le Floch-Prigent, who was convicted in France in several cases relating to his 1989-1993 tenure at Elf and handling of its finances, was extradited on Saturday from Ivory Coast. His court appearance in Togo was expected to happen on Monday or Tuesday.

In the older cases of wrongdoing, an investigation in the 1990s revealed a system of bribes and kickbacks in Elf's international business dealings. Elf later merged with another French company, and the new entity was renamed Total.

Exclusive - Jessica Simpson's Trainer: "She's Real"

Harley Pasternak knows Jessica Simpson. They share a relationship that goes far beyond trainer and trainee. “It’s almost like a family, a family feel, where we’re able to be open with each other,” said the celebrity trainer who chatted with us exclusively by phone for nearly an hour, thrilled to talk about Simpson whom he’s worked with on and off for many years. “She doesn’t have to come here in makeup or dressed to the nines, and I can be honest with her. She says, ‘Gosh, don’t want to do this one,’ and I say, ‘Do it,” and she’ll do it.”

Uros' Goodspeed hotspot packs 10 SIM cards, says roaming is for chumps

Uros' Goodspeed hotspot stuffs in 10 SIM cards, says roaming is for chumps

Snagging international data service usually involves either special agreements or steep roaming costs. Not Uros and its new Goodspeed hotspot. The pocketable, 21Mbps HSPA+ router carries a staggering 10 SIM cards and simply uses a local SIM for whichever destination country you visit. The brute force strategy helps Uros offer a relatively low flat rate for 1GB of data per day, no matter where you are on the coverage map: while the Goodspeed itself costs 273 ($352), Uros asks just €5.90 ($8) a day for occasional visits and €9.90 ($13) a month for frequent fliers. It's a very sizable bargain for the jetset, even with a current scope limited to Finland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. A number of "important" countries are due before Christmas, which could make Uros' hotspot a go-to choice for those who just can't stay settled in one place.

[Thanks, Antti]

WOD Masters: stiff competition: What are Obesogens and do I need ...

Most of this post has appeared on my Environmental Chemicals Blog, which is now being used as an example blog for a Biology course with a Science Blogging component. However, I thought it might be an interesting read for people who, despite eating well and working out like fiends, are still struggling to lean out. It is also a good read for people who want to protect their children, future children or grandkids from metabolic disorders later in life.? Here goes. Living things are delicate, resilient and tenacious.? Their chemistry is fascinating.? We are molecular machines, in a sense, and fine tuned to interact with the external world.? The chemical systems that make us who and what we are took many millions of years to develop.? It is incredible that we are now able to synthesize molecules by ingenuity.? Chemical engineering, pharmaceutical companies and even the much maligned agrochemical industry have, and are, incredibly important to where we stand now.? The drugs, and even pesticides, that have been produced have saved countless lives. It is just now that we have calmed down a little from the excitement of synthesizing new molecules, and started looking at the unintended effects these new molecules have on biochemistry.? Things that alter our biochemistry can alter our health.?? Sometimes they can alter the developmental paths we follow in utero. It would be wonderful if inadvertent exposures to new molecules had beneficial effects.? Its possible.? As with most things, the good things that happen by accident usually go unnoticed. However, it is far easier to be destructive than constructive.

So, back to the post title: what are obesogens?

Obesogens are chemicals that change the way fats (lipids) are handled.? Exposure, especially early in life, may influence patterns of fat distribution, the way the body uses fat, and/or the way fat is synthesized.? It is possible that some chemicals might make us develop as lean, fat burning machines.? This would be a huge problem if we ever have a famine, but that is not our current issue.? Obesity, and its associated health problems, is on the rise.? Some of the chemicals that may be acting as obesogens in people are:
Organotins (used in marine paints, production of plastics, pesticides. Exposure may come through seafood, produce, drinking water and plastics.

Bisphenol A (BPA): from plastics.

Phthalates: from plastics

?Perfluoroalkyll compounds (PFCs): water repellant fabrics, stain preventing treatments.

How to avoid obesogens.

Avoid plastics when possible.? Avoid fabrics treated with water repellants or stain blockers.? Avoid carpet treatments. ?

NFL docks Rahim Moore big

September, 14, 2012

PM ET

Denver second-year safety Rahim Moore was levied with the second big fine of his short career. Moore was fined $21,000 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness (specifically, on a pass play, he unnecessarily struck a defenseless player in the head and neck area) on a play Sunday night when he hit Pittsburgh receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Last year, in the preseason, Moore was fined $20,000 for a hit against Buffalo. Many observers thought Moore?s play slipped after that incident. It will be interesting to see if he is affected by this fine.

Meanwhile, Kansas City running back Shaun Draughn was fined $7,875 for unnecessary roughness (specifically, on a run play, he grabbed the opponent by the facemask) during a fight in the Chiefs? loss against Atlanta.

Superbug kills 7th person at Md. NIH hospital

(AP) ? A deadly germ untreatable by most antibiotics has killed a seventh person at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Maryland.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/OPQOYb) reported the death Friday. NIH officials told the paper that the boy from Minnesota died Sept. 7. NIH says the boy arrived at the research hospital in Bethesda in April and was being treated for complications from a bone marrow transplant when he contracted the bug.

He was the 19th patient at the hospital to contract an antibiotic-resistant strain of KPC, or Klebsiella pneumoniae. The outbreak stemmed from a single patient carrying the superbug who arrived at the hospital last summer.

The paper reported the Minnesota boy's case marked the first new infection of this superbug at NIH since January.
