HarperCollins reaches deal to lower e-book prices

NEW YORK (AP) ? A new and uncertain era of e-book prices has begun.

HarperCollins Publishers announced Tuesday that it has reached new price agreements with sellers that conform to a settlement with the Justice Department over allegations that five publishers and Apple colluded to set prices for e-books. Such new works as Michael Chabon's "Telegraph Avenue" now can be purchased on Amazon.com for $9.99, a price publishers and rival booksellers fear will give Amazon dominant control of the e-market.

Simon & Schuster and Hachette Book Group also settled, but as of Tuesday afternoon e-prices for such fall books from those publishers as Bob Woodward's "The Price of Politics" and Tom Wolfe's "Back to Blood" were selling for $14.99. A spokesman for Simon & Schuster declined comment, while Hachette issued a statement saying it was "engaged in productive discussions with e-book distribution agents."

Apple and two other publishers, Penguin Group (USA) and Macmillan, declined to settle and a trial is expected next June.

The settlement was announced in April, when the Justice Department filed suit, and was approved last week by a federal judge in New York. The legal action stems from agreements reached between major publishers and Apple in 2010 that allowed publishers to set their own prices for e-books, an effort to counter Amazon's deep discounts of best sellers. Over the past two years, Amazon's e-share is widely believed to have dropped from around 90 percent to around 60 percent, with Barnes & Noble.com's rising to 25 percent.

E-books are believed to comprise around 25-30 percent of total sales, exponentially higher than four to five years ago. But growth has slowed over the past year, and reasons cited vary from the higher prices charged under the Apple agreements to a general maturation of the e-market, with the most avid e-book readers already accounted for.

With no definitive resolution expected soon, publishers and booksellers face a complicated time of possible price wars or periods when books may become unavailable during the busy fall season, depending how quickly new agreements are signed. Barnes & Noble.com and other online retailers may feel pressure to cut their prices as deeply as Amazon.com. And Random House Inc., which agreed to a similar sales model as HarperCollins and others but is not involved in the legal action, may find itself charging several dollars more for popular e-books than its competitors charge

Prices for new HarperCollins books differed from seller to seller as of Tuesday afternoon. Chabon's "Telegraph Avenue" cost $12.59 on Barnes & Noble's Nook and $9.99 on Apple's iBookstore. Molly Ringwald's "When It Happens to You" was $9.74 on Amazon, $12.99 on Barnes & Noble and $9.99 on Apple.

(AP) ? The U.S. trade deficit grew to $42 billion in July, widened by fewer exports to Europe, India and Brazil that offset a steep decline in oil imports.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that the trade deficit increased 0.2 percent from June's deficit of $41.9 billion.

U.S. exports fell 1 percent to $183.3 billion. Sales of autos, telecommunications equipment and heavy machinery all declined. Imports dropped 0.8 percent to $225.3 billion.

Economists note that the deficit would have grown much faster had it not been for a 6.5 percent drop in oil imports, largely reflecting cheaper global prices. Prices have increased since then, while demand for exports has dampened.

"It won't be long before the deficit widens more significantly as the global slowdown takes a greater toll on U.S. exports," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics. Dales said trade will likely weigh on growth in the second half of the year.

A wider trade deficit acts as a drag on growth because the U.S. is typically spending more on imports while taking in less from the sales of American-made goods. U.S. growth slowed to a 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, well below what is needed to accelerate a slackening job market.

Growth has also weakened around the globe, which has hurt sales of U.S. goods overseas.

Exports to Europe fell 11.7 percent in July from June. Many European countries are recession, which has cut demand for American-made goods. The region accounts for about one-fifth of U.S. exports.

Exports also fell in other big emerging economies. U.S. sales of goods to Brazil declined 4.4 percent. Exports to India dropped 1.2 percent.

The U.S. exported 0.4 percent more goods to China, the world's second largest economy. But the deficit with China grew 7.2 percent in July to a record $29.4 billion. U.S. imports from China jumped 5.6 percent.

China's economy has weakened this year and may be worsening. On Monday, China reported that its imports from the rest of the world shrank in August.

In July, exports of American farm goods rose to all-time high. There were also gains in exports of commercial aircraft and electric generators. The gains were offset by declines in overseas sales of autos and auto parts and heavy machinery.

Further declines in exports could weigh on manufacturing and slow the ailing job market.

American employers added just 96,000 jobs last month, down from an increase of 141,000 jobs in July and well below the average 226,000 jobs a month created from January through March. Manufacturing, which has been one of the few bright spots in this recovery, lost 15,000 jobs in August.

While the overall unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July, the improvement came only because many people gave up looking for work and therefore were not counted in the government's calculations.

The weak unemployment report has lifted expectations that the Federal Reserve will approve more help for the U.S. economy at their meeting this week.

Obama marks 9/11: ?This is never an easy day?

President and Mrs. Obama mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. (Jason Reed/Reuters)
The mournful tones of "Taps" fluttered over the South Lawn of the White House as President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama led America in a silent tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The crisp, clear day recalled the pleasant fall weather the morning of that national tragedy.

The Obamas walked somberly out of the residence of the White House and, flanked by hundreds of staff, bowed their heads at 8:46 a.m.?11 years after American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. The first couple placed their hands over their hearts as "Taps" played and a military color guard dipped its flags. Afterward, they turned, clasped hands and walked back into the presidential mansion.

[Slideshow: The nation remembers 9/11]

The Obamas then traveled to the Pentagon for a 9/11 observance ceremony. "This is never an easy day," the president told an audience of active-duty service members, families of those killed and others.

"But it is especially difficult for all of you, the families of nearly 3,000 innocents who lost their lives?your mothers and fathers, your husbands and wives, your sons and your daughters. They were taken from us suddenly and far too soon," he said.

"Even now, all these years later, it is easy for those of us who lived through that day to close our eyes and to find ourselves back there?and back here?back when grief crashed over us like an awful wave, when Americans everywhere held each other tight, seeking the reassurance that the world we knew wasn't crumbling under our feet," he said.

"And even though we may never be able to fully lift the burden carried by those left behind, we know that somewhere, a son is growing up with his father's eyes and a daughter has her mother's laugh?living reminders that those who died are with us still.Relatives of victims of 9/11 listen to President Barack Obama at a Pentagon memorial ceremony. (Jason Reed/Reu??

"As painful as this day is and always will be, it leaves us with a lesson that no single event can ever destroy who we are. No act of terrorism can ever change what we stand for. Instead, we recommit ourselves to the values that we believe in, holding firmly without wavering to the hope that we confess," he said. "God bless the memories of those we lost. And God bless these United States of America."

The president will visit the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the Washington suburb of Bethesda in the afternoon.

Vice President Joe Biden traveled to Somerset County, Pennsylvania, to make remarks at a ceremony?honoring the passengers and crew of Flight 93, which slammed into the ground killing all aboard after an insurrection against the hijackers.?Biden, who lost his first wife and baby daughter in a 1972 car crash, drew on his experience to deliver a searingly personal message to families mourning loved ones gone 11 years on.

"For no matter how many anniversaries you experience, for at least an instant, the terror of that moment returns; the lingering echo of that phone call; that sense of total disbelief that envelops you, where you feel like you're being sucked into a black hole in the middle of your chest," he said.

"My hope for you all is that as every year passes, the depth of your pain recedes and you find comfort, as I have, genuine comfort in recalling his smile, her laugh, their touch," Biden said.

"And I hope you're as certain as I am that she can see what a wonderful man her son has turned out to be, grown up to be; that he knows everything that your daughter has achieved, and that he can hear, and she can hear how her mom still talks about her, the day he scored the winning touchdown, how bright and beautiful she was on that graduation day, and know that he knows what a beautiful child the daughter he never got to see has turned out to be, and how much she reminds you of him," Biden said.?"For I know you see your wife every time you see her smile on your child's face.?You remember your daughter every time you hear laughter coming from her brother's lips. And you remember your husband every time your son just touches your hand."

America, Biden said, has "not forgotten the heroism of your husbands, wives, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers."

In Washington, there were a few signs of some of the changes wrought by the attacks, such as a K-9 team outside a metro stop a few blocks from the White House and the dark silhouette of a military battery atop an office building overlooking the presidential mansion. And both Obama's campaign and Mitt Romney's suspended negative ads for a day.

The attacks saw extremists from Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network hijack four airliners to use as guided missiles, crashing into both towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people were killed. America's response included the late-2001 invasion of Afghanistan, a war that is now the country's longest, and the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. Bin Laden met his end at the hands of Navy SEAL commanders in a May 2011 raid on his compound in Pakistan.

Self-Coaching - A Guide - The Self Improvement Blog - Typepad

By David Bonham-Carter -

The last 50 years has seen massive growth within the self-help industry, including:-

  • Enormous interest in self-help books and methods
  • The growth of life coaching as a method for helping people to make significant changes in their life
  • The growth of the internet allowing people to research self-help and self-improvement topics online.

As a life coach who has written a number of self-help books I am interested by the question of how best to coach yourself and what are the advantages of doing so as set against the traditional model of seeking help from someone else.

In my view the main advantages of self-coaching are:

  1. You are empowered to make decisions about yourself and in your time.
  2. It is a cost-effective way of making changes compared to the expense of getting a private coach or counsellor.
  3. In coaching yourself you avoid the difficulties that can arise where a relationship between an individual and their coach or counsellor is not effective, or worse, is inappropriate in some way.

In my view some of the main ingredients to look for in self-coaching tools or books are:

  1. Initial methods for assessing your current position and evaluating it.
  2. Research-based techniques for helping you to improve in your chosen area(s).
  3. Practical ideas which are easy to follow.
  4. Effective tools for reviewing your progress.
  5. Motivational ideas.

If you have an idea of particular techniques that you think may be relevant for you then look for self-coaching products or services that use these. For example if you think that CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) techniques may help you or that NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) techniques may be relevant for you then search for self-coaching products or services that incorporate those approaches in an effective way.

The main things to try to avoid if you want to coach yourself are:

  • Avoid getting caught up in ideas that are too difficult to follow or not really related to you or what you want
  • Avoid self-help tools or guides which are not supportive in their approach ? whilst it is useful to have your ideas challenged in a constructive way, you do not want methods which are likely to leave you feeling worse about yourself and unable to progress or get motivated.

If you are interested in some cost-effective self-coaching tools then click on any of the links below to find out more about self-coaching books, a self-coaching newsletter and life coaching services.

Obama administration urges terror surveillance renewal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration maintains it is unable to say how many times one of the government's most politically sensitive anti-terrorism surveillance programs ? which is up for renewal this week on Capitol Hill ? has inadvertently gathered intelligence about U.S. citizens.

In a briefing for reporters on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the general counsel for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said Tuesday that the program designed to monitor international communications by terrorist suspects has collected an extraordinary amount of valuable intelligence overseas about foreign terrorist suspects while simultaneously protecting civil liberties of Americans.

Originated by the George W. Bush administration, the program was publicly disclosed by The New York Times in 2005 and was restructured in 2008 to provide oversight by a secret federal court and with additional oversight from Congress.

Civil liberties groups and some members of Congress have expressed concern that the government may be reviewing the emails and phone calls of law-abiding Americans in the U.S. who are at the other end of communications with foreign terrorist suspects being monitored abroad.

The House began debating renewal of the program Tuesday and expected to vote Wednesday. A hold has been placed on the legislation in the Senate by one of the program's critics, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.

The program "is not a tool for spying on Americans," said Robert Litt, the general counsel for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Litt said the program cannot be used to target American citizens and cannot be used to target people within the U.S. In addition, it cannot be used to collect the contents of any communication when all the participants are in the United States, said the ODNI's general counsel.

There has never been any intentional effort to bypass restrictions, he added.

At Tuesday's news briefing, reporters repeatedly pressed Litt on how many times there had been incidental collections of intelligence on Americans.

Litt pointed out that the National Security Agency, the ODNI and independent inspectors general for each office have said information is not readily available on the number of instances involving unintentional monitoring of U.S. citizens.

Some members of Congress have suggested that the law contains a loophole that enables intelligence-gathering on U.S. citizens.

"I strongly take exception to the suggestion that there is a 'loophole,'" James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, said in a letter to 11 Senate Democrats and two Senate Republicans on Aug. 24.

The law prohibits "reverse targeting ? targeting a person located outside the United States as a pretext when the real goal is to target a person inside the United States."

On Tuesday night, Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., said the DNI's Aug. 24 response does not sufficiently address Udall's concerns regarding "the possibility of unauthorized surveillance of Americans." Wyden criticized the lack of "even a ballpark estimate of how many Americans have had their communications collected under this law."

Asked at the news briefing about the program's successes, Litt said that the ability to collect certain kinds of communications that cannot be gathered any other way is "incredibly helpful." He said that being more specific would signal to the targets of the surveillance what was being collected.

In July, the administration acknowledged in a rare disclosure that the program had exceeded legal limits on at least one occasion, but that the problem had been remedied. The ODNI made the comment in a letter to Wyden, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

On at least one occasion, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court held that an intelligence collection effort was "unreasonable under the Fourth Amendment" requirement to obtain a court warrant, Wyden said at the time.

In response, the intelligence office said that Wyden's statements "may convey an incomplete and potentially misleading understanding" of what is at issue.

Litt said he had met with Wyden, talked through the issues and that the ODNI was prepared to continue doing that.

"If a problem develops, we fix it," Litt said of the program.

Shares of oil companies mixed as crude prices dip

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oil stocks were mixed Monday as crude prices fell on news of weak imports from China, the world's second-largest economy.

An analyst for Raymond James said he expects oil prices to "dramatically deteriorate" as a dull global economy and rising U.S. supplies lead to an oil glut.

Crude oil prices have been rising since late June, propelled higher by tighter supplies and by rising tension between the West and Iran, an oil producer that has threatened to block tankers in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear program.

The Raymond James analyst, J. Marshall Adkins, said the Iran situation and speculation over economic stimulus by the Federal Reserve have helped short-term oil prices. He raised his forecast for fourth-quarter oil prices.

But, Adkins added, "we still believe oil market fundamentals are going to dramatically deteriorate over the next six months or so." He said rising U.S. oil supplies and a stagnant global economy should lead to a glut of oil in 12 to 18 months., and he predicted that Saudi Arabia will respond by cutting oil production early next.

It was news from China, not Iran, that caused oil prices to slip Monday. Benchmark crude was off 53 cents to $95.87 after China's imports dropped unexpectedly in August and the Chinese president warned of further slow growth.

In afternoon trading, shares of Exxon Mobil Corp. fell 18 cents to $89.73 ; ConocoPhillips dropped 19 cents to $56.45; and Chevron slipped 9 cents to $113.91.

U.S. shares of Royal Dutch Shell PLC fell 51 cents to $71.08 while those of BP PLC gained 20 cents to $42.13.

Merinosmobilya Ideas And Inspiration For Home Improvement Projects

Always keep the big picture in mind when embarking on a long term home improvement project. Your budget may dictate that you break up a project into several smaller, more manageable pieces, but take care that the finished product doesn?t look like a hodgepodge of unrelated, poorly thought out elements.

If you own a smartphone, use it to help you collect inspiration for your next painting project. There are a variety of apps available that will match paint colors to anything that you can snap a photo of, so you can collect potential paint chips right on your phone. Some apps will even allow you to order a sample of a shade you like.

In a search for an simple home improvement, you found new kitchen hardware that you love but just doesn?t go with your existing style. Time to make some decisions. Where to start? Paint your existing cabinets, refinish them with stain, or buy new ones. Whatever you decide, make sure it?s in your home improvement budget.

Make your renovation plans, then stick to them. Contractors become gun-shy about doing work when the owner constantly changes and tweaks the plans. Even though a huge renovation project seems easier when you break it up, piece-mealing it slows things down because the only thing workers can depend on is the plans changing.

Paint your floor in sections corresponding with the direction of the planking. When you paint the floor of a large room it is easy to paint yourself into a corner or to unintentionally block access to the rest of the house until the paint dries. If you paint in sections you can leave paths that run along specific boards. When you paint the adjoining section everything will match perfectly.

Make sure that only high quality supplies are used in your home improvement projects. This will ensure that the work lasts for greatest amount of time and offers the best finish. You don?t want to find out a few months down the road that using a higher quality would have prevented wear and tear or easy damaging.

Choose two easy-to-remember days of the year to check and replace, if necessary, the batteries in your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. New Year?s Day and the Fourth of July are ideal times to perform this task. You should also make sure that your fire extinguishers work and discuss your family?s exit strategy in the event of a fire.

Still running those window unit air conditioners? Central AC is a costly upgrade but a rewarding one. It will save you money on your electric bill, so you will slowly make the upgrade cost back. Plus, it significantly increases the value of a home. Look into upgrading to Central AC in your home.

For the budget-minded homeowner working on a plumbing home improvement project, plastic PVC piping makes an entirely suitable substitute for expensive copper piping. PVC has been extensively tested and used for years without danger or failure. It is easy to work with and highly durable. The money saved by using PVC can be applied to more visible, usable home improvements.

Look for the line of nails! If you need to snug up a protruding piece of paneling or drywall you can normally tell where to add a new nail or screw just by closely observing the surface of the panel. It was installed by nailing it to the underlying wall studs and evidence of those studs will likely still be visible.

Ah, you have read the aforementioned article, or you wouldn?t be down here reading through the conclusion. Well done! That article should have provided you with a proper foundation of what it takes to properly and safely improve your home. If any questions still remain, try reviewing the article again.

Why A Health And Fitness Regimen Is Vital In Retirement Planning ...

When people are keen on retirement planning, it's usually because of their desire to be financially secure. It is everything related to bank savings, bonds, pension plans, investments, and new business ventures with the goal of increasing value of hard earned money. With too much focus on these things, it is then easy to neglect the importance of lifestyle planning that may lead to problems related to health. If you are leading a life without any form of physical activity, it's high time to start now and deal with it.

As people grow old, they become more susceptible to sickness and body weakening. This is especially true if they've had poor eating habits and didn't exercise from the beginning. In the same way that you want to save up to have adequate funds to meet your future daily needs and indulgences, retirement how to experts will also let you appreciate the importance of aiming for an active lifestyle. This is so that you could live longer and be able to witness your grandchildren grow.

Sitting for very long hours in the office and not having the chance to do some physical activities may actually expose you to weight and health problems later on. Making up for this may easily be done with techniques that you can carry out to keep your body in good shape. For example, when you are on your way to the office, ask to be dropped off one bus station away from the usual drop off zone. Doing this allows you to do some walking exercises which can be good for the heart. As you enter the building and proceed to your work area, carry on by going up the stairs instead of the elevator.

If any type of exercise is really not possible, make sure to include a health and fitness regimen when planning for a retirement in Singapore. When you retire, you will already have the time to do the things that you've kept on postponing because of being busy with work.

Reaching the age of retirement wouldn't be a hindrance at all since the possibilities are endless. You can choose to take part in a dance class, train for a new sport, go biking, or have jogging dates with friends or loved ones. Every dollar and minute spent will certainly ultimately pay off as you become leaner and healthier.
