(AP) ? The Mexican Navy says federal police shot at a vehicle carrying two U.S. government employees after the vehicle came under attack from unidentified gunmen.

The shooting appears to have been a case of a confused gunbattle that broke out on a rural road just south of Mexico City.

The Navy said Friday the embassy personnel were heading down a dirt road to a military installation when a carload of gunmen opened fire on them and chased them, along with a Navy officer accompanying them.

Alerted to the gunfire, a federal police patrol vehicle came to the scene and apparently opened fire. The statement does not make clear whose bullets injured the U.S. workers.

Holmes made threats, was barred from campus in June

James Holmes (Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office)

CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- The prosecution in the James Holmes mass murder case said on Thursday that the suspect's school life is linked to the July 20 shootings that killed 12 people during a midnight screening of the new Batman movie. Karen Pearson, a lawyer with the Arapahoe County District Attorney's office, said during a hearing that Holmes was also barred from campus after he made threats in June.

"What's going on in the defendant's [education] life is extremely relevant in this case," Pearson said. She said Holmes' threats to campus, his grades, emails and withdrawal from the University of Colorado in 2011 are tied to his purchasing ammunition, body armor and explosives.

Particularly notable, she said, was Holmes' failed oral examination on June 7, just weeks before the theater attack.

"All of that is relevant," Pearson said, "and goes to his decision to withdrawal from school and booby trap his apartment with explosives and commit this act."

Defense attorney Daniel King, at times angry and animated, accused the prosecution of illegally obtaining documents and said it was inappropriately "fishing" for any information on the suspected shooter.

During the hour-long hearing, King told Judge William Sylvester he believed prosecutors unlawfully seized documents that relate to Holmes' education. Those records include Holmes' admission application, course work, class grades, oral exam results, school emails, and his petition for withdrawal from the school. Holmes was pursuing a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

"We now have a pattern of conduct going on in which the prosecution is illegally obtaining documents," King said during the procedural hearing at Arapahoe County District Court. Saying the legal process was "deteriorating," King told Judge Sylvester he suspects the DA's office already knows much of the information they're formally asking for in court.

"Judge, they've already got what they're saying they're seeking," King said.

The school motive, King said, is behind the prosecution's "fishing expedition," a phrase he repeatedly used to describe tactics across the courtroom.
But "motive is irrelevant," King said.

Pearson denied any illegality and said she had a signed order to obtain the records.

"The defense is implying we have obtained those in some illegal manner, and we have not," Pearson said. She said Holmes' grades, relationships with professor and communication with the school could be tied to "the planning of the acts." The DA's office has also requested campus police records on Holmes, and a behavioral threat and health assessment of Holmes that she said is relevant to the shootings.

However, according to the Associated Press, the University of Colorado said in writing that there were no documents related to Holmes' campus ban. That conflicts with the prosecution's arguments on Thursday.

Holmes, who faces 142 counts stemming from the rampage, sat still and said nothing during the hearing. His orange-red hair is browning at the roots, and he still dons a red jail jumpsuit. He will appear in court on Aug. 30 for another hearing. His university psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, is expected to testify then.

Attorneys on Thursday also argued over whether Fenton and other psychiatric professionals are considered, for legal purposes, medical doctors, and thus whether Holmes' relationship and communication with Fenton is privileged information. Prosecutors also said Holmes sent a notebook to Fenton that contains violent descriptions. Prosecutors want access; the defense team argues the notebook is covered under doctor-patient privilege.

King further told Sylvester that no communication from a psychiatric professional could be uttered without a patient waiving privilege, and that records are protected under state and federal laws.

Sylvester asked defense lawyers to provide him with written arguments on that matter by noon on Friday.

Scientists produce hydrogen for fuel cells using an inexpensive catalyst under real-world conditions

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Scientists at the University of Cambridge have produced hydrogen, H2, a renewable energy source, from water using an inexpensive catalyst under industrially relevant conditions (using pH neutral water, surrounded by atmospheric oxygen, O2, and at room temperature).

Lead author of the research, Dr Erwin Reisner, an EPSRC research fellow and head of the Christian Doppler Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, said: "A H2 evolution catalyst which is active under elevated O2 levels is crucial if we are to develop an industrial water splitting process -- a chemical reaction that separates the two elements which make up water. A real-world device will be exposed to atmospheric O2 and also produce O2 in situ as a result of water splitting."

Although H2 cannot be used as a 'direct' substitute for gasoline or ethanol, it can be used as a fuel in combination with fuel cells, which are already available in cars and buses. H2 is currently produced from fossil fuels and it produces the greenhouse gas CO2 as a by-product; it is therefore neither renewable nor clean. A green process such as sunlight-driven water splitting is therefore required to produce 'green and sustainable H2'.

One of the many problems that scientists face is finding an efficient and inexpensive catalyst that can function under real-world conditions: in water, under air and at room temperature. Currently, highly efficient catalysts such as the noble metal platinum are too expensive and cheaper alternatives are typically inefficient. Very little progress was made so far with homogeneous catalyst systems that work in water and atmospheric O2.

However, Cambridge researchers found that a simple catalyst containing cobalt, a relatively inexpensive and abundant metal, operates as an active catalyst in pH neutral water and under atmospheric O2.

Dr Reisner said: "Until now, no inexpensive molecular catalyst was known to evolve H2 efficiently in water and under aerobic conditions. However, such conditions are essential for use in developing green hydrogen as a future energy source under industrially relevant conditions.

"Our research has shown that inexpensive materials such as cobalt are suitable to fulfil this challenging requirement. Of course, many hurdles such as the rather poor stability of the catalyst remain to be addressed, but our finding provides a first step to produce 'green hydrogen' under relevant conditions."

The results show that the catalyst works under air and the researchers are now working on a solar water splitting device, where a fuel H2 and the by-product O2 are produced simultaneously.

Fezile Lakadamyali and Masaru Kato, co-authors of the study, add: "We are excited about our results and we are optimistic that we will successfully assemble a sunlight-driven water splitting system soon."

The research was funded by EPSRC, the Christian Doppler Research Association and the OMV Group. Their research was published 23 August, online in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

Children's Health and Fitness - Len Saunders

From NewsMax?..

If you?re obese and planning on fathering children, you need to shed the extra pounds if you want to give them a good start in life. Until now, the health risks surrounding obesity and pregnancy have focused on overweight moms. New research, however, shows that obesity has a negative impact on sperm, and men need to shape up as well.

Scientists from the University of Melbourne?s Department of Zoology created mice embryos through in vitro fertilization with sperm from both obese males and those of normal weight. The obese mice had been fed the equivalent of a Western-style fast-food diet for 10 weeks.

?We found that development was delayed in the fetuses produced from obese fathers,? said researcher Natalie Binder. ?The rate of embryo implantation into the womb and fetal development decreased in these animals by up to 15 per cent.

?Furthermore,? she said, ?placental weight and development was significantly less for embryos derived from the sperm of obese males.

?These findings indicate that paternal obesity not only negatively affects embryo development, but also impacts on the successful implantation into the womb,? she said.

?This results in a small placenta which impairs fetal growth and development with long-term consequences for the health of the offspring.?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 72.3 percent of American men over the age of 20 are overweight or obese.

As children we are taught in schools, churches and by our parents, how to enter into relationships We learned how to meet people and to play by the rules of dating and partnering as seen exclusively by the heterosexual population As gay and lesbian people we learn about heterosexism, the belief that heterosexuality is superior to homosexuality, and we learn to integrate that belief even if subconsciously into our lives With those beliefs accepted, we as adults continue to mimic heterosexual systems and attempt to mold ourselves into the straight norms and therefore we have bowed to Matchcom, Chemistrycom and the like As children we are not taught how to seek out and enter into gay relationships Many of us learned about gay people through unsavory rumors, hearsay and often from tasteless jokes from our friends and piers We learned to meet others by sneaking around in unsafe and unhealthy places Parks, public restrooms, bars and dark streets have long been knowsn as meeting places and pickup sites for gay people, especially gay men For decades gay and lesbian people have had limited options for meeting people and therefore, we\'ve learned to create relationships and find intimacy through often non-traditional means Many people believe that with the internet boom of the 90\'s, that gays led the charge in the development of online meetings, pickups, hookup sites and even the advent of online pornography American online, Prodigy (yes I remember Prodigy), and others owe much of their early revenue sources and development capitol to gay people who used their services to avoid the usual \"non-traditional\" avenues These models became so successful that we have dropped the ball on building even better resources and options We have as LGBT people defined our own paths by which we date and build relationships With the lack of discussion and the climate of inclusion in our upbringing, we have made the best of a bad situation and we\'ve created our own solutions and we have written our own rules This is why these \"other\" dating and relationship building sites, simply don\'t make the cut

Alphey provides the LGBT population with an option for developing real and substantial relationships through honest analysis and compatibility matching Science, psychology and technology are utilized to achieve these With the unfortunate lack of reasonable options for gay and lesbian singles men for men Through deliberate direction, management and operation, Alpheycom is becoming the leader and role model for bringing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans-gender individuals together and thereby adding to the strength and social structure of the gay and lesbian community

Relationship and introduction sites are often confused with hook-up sites We use science and psychological elements to provide members with enough information and sufficient background to introduce them to other members with whom they should find enough in common to build or at least begin to build a foundation These tools are oriented towards LGBT psychology and environments Our members only have access to members they are matched to The introduction page that a matched member is presented with includes a personality profile a comparison to the matches profile and the members summary, it goes beyond sexual propensities Hook up sites simply provide access to large database with ads from members looking for quick sexual hook ups

LGBT people have many layers and we have distinct ways that we define ourselves and our gender Gay men range from ultra masculine to the majority who are pretty mainstream to very feminine These issues are not addressed in the mainstream shared sites The same can be said for gay women Gender identity issues are not mentioned or addressed on Matchcom There are different levels of physical attractions that are influenced by factors that Chemistrycom would never talk about There are issues that some people in the LGBT community would find important that these \"mainstream\" sites don\'t consider HIV/Aids status is an important issue with many gay people Alphey provides these options if they are wanted Not all gay men would be inclined to date a transvestite, but some would LGBT Not all gay women would want to date any type of women We address dating and matching issues for trans-gender people as well Mainstream sites wouldn\'t even begin to consider addressing these issues But they are happy take money from LGBT people and they offer very little in the way of real service

Now more than ever, marriage equality and LGBT relationships are in the public debate Those who oppose us, those who would deny us equality look at some of our \' queer\' behavior and they judge us To some people, the way we present ourselves to the public is considered as unacceptable behavior The reality is, we in the LGBT community have identified and created our own place or niche men for men We have defined ourselves despite the criticism that we face Some of these criticisms have served to strengthen us and by these we have defined ourselves But, how are we at building strong and meaningful relationships? We aren\'t taught in our homes Who are our role models who are our teachers?? The Bars, the Chat lines and Gaycom

Alpheycom is about men and women who identify as LGBTQ We are about building relationships and strengthening our community We are for building our families as we choose to define them Here in in Salt Lake City we have our own unique flavor of intolerance and religious persecution Some feel that we are on the front lines of battle for marriage equality so, what better place to bring Alphey to the population

NHL collective bargaining session brief in Toronto

TORONTO (AP) ? Another NHL lockout is beginning look inevitable.

Unable to move beyond the philosophical stage of talks, the owners and players have watched another week slip by without progress. They sat down together for a quick session Thursday morning before reporting the same significant gap that has existed all along.

The main issue that divides them is far from complex.

"We believe we're paying out more than we should be," Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "It's as simple as that."

Of course, the NHL Players' Association doesn't quite see it that way.

Executive director Donald Fehr has acknowledged there's room for some flexibility in that area ? last week's proposal included three years with a slightly lower share in revenues for the players ? but he hasn't come to the table in a conciliatory mood after taking over a union that capitulated during the last round of negotiations.

"Everybody understands that employers would always like to pay less," Fehr said. "That's not a surprise to anybody ? it's disappointing sometimes ? but it's not a surprise."

He went on to add that the services his constituents provide are irreplaceable.

"From the players' standpoint, they want a fair agreement, they want one that is equitable, they want one that recognizes their contribution," Fehr said.

With both sides so entrenched, real negotiations have yet to begin even though the Sept. 15 deadline for a lockout is fast approaching.

The parties attempted to make some progress Wednesday by clearing the meeting room of everyone but the key figures: Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly along with Fehr and his brother Steve Fehr, the union's No. 2 man. They soon discovered there was little common ground.

Those same four men will reopen talks next Tuesday in New York during what promises to be a key negotiation session. The sides have tentatively blocked off the rest of the week for meetings as well, but they must first determine if there's anything worth talking about.

That's far from guaranteed.

A league that lost the entire 2004-05 season to a lockout is in real danger of having the start of another one disrupted for the same reason. The current CBA has seen the NHL grow from a $2.1 billion industry to one that pulls in $3.3 billion annually ? a fact that isn't lost on either side.

"We recovered well last time because we have the world's greatest fans," Bettman said.

The essential difference between the offers put forward so far is perhaps best articulated in terms of their impact on the salary cap. Under the NHL's initial proposal, it would fall to $50.8 million for next season. The NHLPA's would see it set near $69 million.

The league also is believed to have verbally raised the possibility of seeing the players' share in revenue drop incrementally rather than all at once. Theoretically, it could be done at a rate that is matched by an expected increase in revenues ? essentially keeping salaries constant over the duration of the agreement while owners take in more profit.

So far, the union hasn't shown much interest in negotiating off of that kind of model.

While it's natural to assume the parties might be more willing to make concessions as Sept. 15 nears, Fehr pointed out that they already know what's at stake.

"If there's going to be a lockout ? and that's something that the owners will choose or not choose ? then you would have missed games, you would have lost revenue, you would have lost paychecks," he said. "But that doesn't mean that the parties don't understand going into it that that would be the case."

With the possibility of a lockout becoming more real, the posturing is starting to begin. Bettman lamented Thursday that the union wasn't ready to open talks a year ago ? the commissioner did say throughout the season there was more than enough time to make a deal ? while Fehr continues to point out that Sept. 15 is only a deadline because the NHL has made it one.

The bottom line is that they need to make an agreement and there isn't one in sight.

Seven years ago, the sides battled one another over the philosophical view of whether the sport needed a salary cap. With that out of the way, this fight is all about money, although Bettman declined to go into detail when asked why the owners were seeking such significant givebacks.

"I'm not going to get into a public debate on that," he said. "Obviously, if we didn't think that there were issues that needed to be addressed we wouldn't be in this type of negotiation."

3 Common Mistakes Investors in the Stock Market make Each Day ...

Mistakes when you are investing in the stock market are usually costly. And the vast majority of us have made our fair share? which is why so many studies demonstrate that over 75% of investors, even the so-called ?professional? advisors, lose money investing in the stock market. Given a few moments, we could write quite a comprehensive list of mistakes we?ve made? and among this long list, we?d find three common ones almost every investor makes each day.

Predicting vs. Preparing

When you make an investment, whether it be in a mutual fund, GIC, stock or other financial instrument, you do so with an expectation in mind? namely, to make money. However, depending on the financial instrument, you?re ability to ?guarantee? your outcome can be quite illusive.

One of the most frustrating experiences for investors is when their investment does not do what they predicted it would. Usually, losses occur and investors are left wondering what went wrong. Some double-down? making another prediction that it will turn around eventually. Others pull the plug, emptying their account prior to the upsurge.

Prediction leads to emotional turmoil? and more often than not, losses. There is a subtle, yet significant, shift in the mind of profitable investors. Instead of trying to predict the movement of the stock market or their individual security, they prepare for the changes. It?s like having both an offence with which to attack and score when momentum is behind you and having a defence with which to preserve your capital and minimize your risk when the headwinds simply get to strong to fight. Guessing is attune to gambling not investing, so be sure to have a bent toward preparation over prediction.

Assuming Unnecessary Risk

Risk is a reality of investing? and can lead to some significant rewards. But you don?t have to risk big to experience big returns. Many investors, in hopes of winning big quickly, risk big. They use their home as leverage, borrowing and increasing their debts to invest with the hope they?ve predicted things correctly. But when they are wrong, the debt levels can become overwhelming, only increasing the anxiety of investing.

It?s a natural tendency for investors to try to win big? and with the number of courses in online short-term stock trading (day trading) or forex or options, the opportunities are there to try something new. Unfortunately, many inexperienced investors assume the role of a desperate gambler, betting their last few dollars on a handful of long shots. Why take on so much unnecessary risk when there are so many well established stocks with significant growth and revenue? some of which are offering decent dividends.

Refusing to Change

The third common mistakes investors in the stock market make each day is to refuse to make changes. Whether it be frustration and refusing to make changes in your portfolio or an unwillingness to consider another?s strategy, investors can be so entrenched in their ways they continue to simply lose money out of stubborn refusal to change. Take account of your portfolio? and if you continue to experience losses or are simply spinning your wheels, take some time to consider a few other investment strategy services that can help you make money in the markets each day.

No one likes to be proven wrong? but we have to change our mind sometimes. It?s natural to feel angry when you get run over by a stock? but it is an exercise in pain that can be like growing pains if you learn from your mistakes. Don?t dig in your heals? or you may just dig a hole you can?t really get out of in your lifetime. When the game is done, you can?t win anymore? yet many people won?t admit the game is over, despite people running from the stands and the lights being turned out on a stock.

What common mistakes have you seen investors make time and time again? Are you willing to share one of your own so others can learn from your mishap? Hopefully, we can all?avoid these three common mistakes investors make in the stock market each day.

Antioxidants - Vs - Free Radicals - Immune System

Antioxidants - Vs - Free Radicals - Immune System

http://www.cancerfoundation.com/about.html Oxidation is the cause of Free Radicals, this happens when an electron is knocked out of a chemical bond. These highly reactive Free Radicals will interact with and damage healthy molecules. Oxidative Stress occurs when destructive power of Free Radicals spread from one cell to surrounding cells inflicting widespread damage. There are Oxidation Factors in our daily lives, such as poor diet, stress, pollution, and aging. Oxidation also increases disease risks, like cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and autoimmune disease. Antioxidants can reverse the effects of oxidation, by way of Antioxidation. Antioxidant is essentially the exact opposite of oxidation, in that antioxidant molecules have electrons to spare. Once an antioxidant and a free radical come in to contact, the antioxidant will supply the free radical with an electron, thus repairing the chemical bond and returning stability to the molecule. With the prevalence of oxidation factors, it is very important to supply your body with a reservoir of antioxidants. Animation created by Kyle Thornthwaite - email: kyle@kt-3d.com

Sicko (2007): the British Healthcare System Part 3

The clip the british healthcare system Part 3 from Sicko (2007) This guy broke his ankle. How much will this cost him? The emergency room visit. He'll have some huge bill when he's done, right? Here... NHS, everything is free. I'm asking about hospital charges and you're laughing. I was never asked this question in the emergency department, that's why. I was starting to fall for this "everything is free" bit. And then I discovered this. So this is where people come to pay their bill when they're done staying here? No, this is the NHS hospital, so you don't pay the bill. You get to just go home? Why does it say "cashier" here if people don't have to pay a bill? All we have is a little man who stands behind a counter and he gives people money if they've had to pay for transport. Those who have reduced means get their travel expenses reimbursed. Thank you. So in British hospitals. Instead of money going into the cashier's window. Money comes out. The criteria for letting you out are not if you've paid, the criteria are, are you fit to go and are you going somewhere safe? Clearly. I was just the butt of a joke here. What I needed was a good old-fashioned American who would have some understanding. I first came to London in 1992. And we just ended up staying and we had three children here. Well, I had them all on the NHS, which is the British National Health Service. I think, like a lot of Americans, assumed that a socialized medicine was just bottom of the rung treatment, that the only way would be horrible and it would be like the Soviet Union. I mean, that's kind of how... And it's terrible that that's what I thought. That's what I thought. Too. After having a baby. It's right back to the wheat fields.

Back to school wellness for kids

w_kids.jpgYoung people are headed back to school. We can support their school success by creating habits at home that will support both the health of their body and mind.
A good day starts with the night before
Children require more sleep than adults to be able to function their best during the day. Elementary and middle school age children should be getting 10-12 hours of sleep per night and high school students 9-10 hours. In young people, the signs of poor sleep differ from adults and can often be characterized by 'hyperactive' behaviors. As caregivers, we must create an environment that allows children to rest. We can help our children establish consistent sleep routines by modeling these behaviors ourselves. For example, is important to set limits on the use of technology (computers, cell phones, ipods) especially in the evening hours. It is also recommended that children not have televisions in their room.

Start the morning with breakfast (read on, not just any breakfast)
It matters what we have for breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day. Eating a breakfast that contains protein (e.g. a serving of healthy breakfast meat, eggs, peanut butter, yogurt, cheese) and complex carbohydrates (e.g. oatmeal, a slice of whole grain toast, brown rice) will allow your child to have a constant source of fuel that gets them through the morning. Studies have shown that children who skip breakfast perform less well in school.

Help your kids to stop drinking (their calories)
The average American consumes 150 pounds of sugar per year. For kids the number is even higher and most of his sugar intake comes in the form of high calorie sweetened beverages (soda, sweet teas, juice drinks). Increasing numbers of children and young people are dealing with very grown up health issues like being overweight, diabetes and heart disease. As a result, this may be the first generation where children may not live as long as their parents. The consumption of sugar and sweetened drinks is being shown to be very addicting. The same rules apply as to quitting any other addiction: enlist support, do not keep it in the house (stop buying soda and teas and juices) and plan and provide alternatives (water, milk and whole fruits). You may need to go slow. If you fall off the wagon start again. If your children have developed a (sugar) drinking habit, one of the best things you can do for their long-term health this school year is an intervention.

They have got to move it move it
Kids (and adults) need to move to be healthy. The evidence shows that regular physical activity is associated with better school performance. School age children should get at least an hour of physical activity each day. How do we do this? Many of us have children. None of us have enough time. Offer to do childcare exchanges -- take your kids and your friend's kids to the park while they prepare dinner and they can do the same for you the next night. Make it a competition, have kids compete e.g. doing wind sprints or jumping jacks. If you really cannot get outside look at youtube for kids workouts, there are many.

Reading is Fundamental
As parents we all want our children to reach their full potential and be successful. Helping our children to establish a lifelong love for learning is crucial. So, even when the homework is done, make reading a priority. Assist your children in finding books and information that they will enjoy and that will expand their world. Before children are able to read, read to them. As they transition becoming independent readers, you can read with them and then discuss what you have read. Ask them their opinion about events in the world and listen carefully (you may be surprised). Encourage the use of community information resources - our local library system, local writers and free weekly community newspapers. Whatever our children's dreams and aspirations, being able to read information, comprehend it and apply it in their life is a skill that will ensure their health and success.
