normblog: War and entertainment

Nine Nobel Peace Prize winners, including Desmond Tutu, Shirin Ebadi and Jos? Ramos-Horta, have written in protest against NBC's reality TV show 'Stars Earn Stripes'. This tests the participants in military simulations of various kinds, and the Nobel prizewinners see the programme as part of a tradition of glorifying war. They write that preparation for war, so far from being entertaining, is 'down-in-the-dirt deadly', ripping societies apart and leaving deep scars; they lament the 'long history of collaboration between militaries and civilian media and entertainment'. A spokesman for NBC has replied that 'Stars Earn Stripes' is a glorification, not of war, but of service.

In posting about this I don't mean to defend the programme. I haven't seen it and nor will I, since I've never watched any reality TV that didn't repel me. If I've ever watched 10 continuous minutes of reality TV, I've repressed the experience from my memory. For all I know, 'Stars Earn Stripes' does glorify or trivialize war, as Archbishop Tutu and the others claim. What I want to discuss is a more general issue: whether a compelling argument can be made for saying that war should never be a subject for entertainment. I don't know if this is what the nine Nobel Peace Prize winners mean to say, but it's a possible inference from what they do say.

The difficulty in such a position, as I see it, may be expressed in a single word - art. Not that art and entertainment are the same thing. They can't be, since there is entertainment that we wouldn't describe as art - darts or speedway, for example, or playing Cluedo or charades - and there is also, for nearly all of us, some art which we don't find entertaining, because we find it dull. So the boundaries of the two concepts are different. There is, however, a significant overlap between art and entertainment. I could give many examples but will stick to one: film.

War is a common topic in the cinema; indeed, war movies are a genre of their own. Could we reasonably say that there should be no (more) war movies? I don't see how one could defend that. War is a major part of human experience and one of the things art does - likewise, therefore, that cousin of it that we know, loosely, as entertainment - is to reflect the realities of human life back at us; to highlight aspects of it, whether in celebration or criticism of them, or simply to show up a complexity or something not previously noticed, and so forth. Of course, this can be done well or it can be done badly, but to enjoin that things should only be done well would be a vain plea.

Might one then say, perhaps, that war should never be shown in a positive light in art or entertainment, only treated realistically and critically? Even this seems to me a stretch. In their best forms representations of war will surely include enough realism about it that the experience of war will not be romanticized or trivialized. Yet if there is heroism, or courage, or compassion, or friendship, or mercy or other humane qualities, in war, are they not to be included in its representation? And what of wars by which people are liberated from horrors other than the horror of war itself - tyranny, national oppression, genocide - and these brought to an end? If the reality of war may be a proper subject of art, as in fact it must be, then it will also be a subject of some genres of what we call entertainment, and, in whichever sphere, the different sides of war will be brought out willy-nilly, badly or well.

One final thought on this: Catch-22. About war; and entertaining.

The Nonprofit Research Collaborative did a study of the health of U.S. nonprofit businesses based on a October 2011 survey of 875 responding nonprofits. Here are the highlights of their findings.

The report concludes by saying that while the economy is recovering, the nonprofit sector has not yet seen an improvement in fundraising results. What improvements are occurring seems to benefit the larger nonprofits.

Gartner: Global Mobile Sales Down 2%, Smartphones Surge 43%, Apple Stalls As Fans Hold Out For New iPhone

galaxys3Gartner is the latest of the big analyst houses to release its numbers for smartphone and overall mobile sales in Q2. The picture it paints is one of a market that has, effectively, one winner at the moment: Android -- and more specifically Samsung -- with growth for Apple's iPhone "paused" as users hold out for the next iPhone and ride out the tough economy. Worldwide, there were 419 million phones sold to end users, is down 2.3% compared to a year ago, Gartner says. Just over one-third (36.7%) of all devices sold were smartphones, which continued to grow well even as the wider market (which includes feature phones) declined. Sales of smartphones were up by 42.7% to 154 million units, with Apple and Samsung together accounting for 83% of all smartphone sales.

US population is pi high: 3.14 hundred million

Math geeks everywhere observe Pi Day on March 14. But Aug. 14, 2012, is also a special day for the beloved and never-ending irrational number.

Just after 2:29 p.m. ET Tuesday, the American population reached 314,159,265, or pi (3.14159265) times 100 million, according to the Census Bureau's population clock.

"This is a once in many generations event ... so go out and celebrate this American pi," demographer Howard Hogan said in a statement from the Census Bureau.

Pi, or in symbol form, ?, is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Computer scientists have calculated billions of digits of pi, starting with 3.14159265358979323. But because no recognizable pattern emerges in the succession of its digits, we could continue calculating the next digit, and the next, and the next, for millennia, and we'd still have no idea which digit might emerge next.

Pi has long fascinated mathematicians, with some of the greatest thinkers putting their noggins to the task of calculating it. Perhaps the first to try his hand at pi was Greek mathematician and scientist Archimedes who in the third century B.C. is said to have determined the number fit somewhere between 223/71 and 22/7, or roughly 3.141 and 3.143.

Later, German-born mathematician Ludolph van Ceulen reportedly calculated pi out to 35 decimal places. His pi-pride can still be seen, as he had the numbers engraved on his tombstone. With buff computers, scientists have calculated pi to more than 10 trillion decimal places, according to educator Ron Hipschman, who has helped organize Pi Day celebrations since they began at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco, Calif.

While today may have mathematicians elated, grounded statistics suggest U.S. population growth has slowed recently. For instance, between 2000 and 2010 (April 10), the U.S. resident population increased by 9.7-percent, compared with a 13.2 percent increase documented between 1990 and 2000, according to the Census Bureau.

On Oct. 31, 2011, the world population hit its 7 billion mark, with a whopping 10 billion individuals expected to reside on Earth by 2100.

Evelyn Lozada issues statement on Johnson arrest

NEW YORK (AP) ? Evelyn Lozada says Chad Johnson "needs help."

The reality star issued her first statement Tuesday since the football star's arrest for allegedly head-butting her. The altercation took place in the Miami area Saturday.

Lozada says she's "deeply disappointed" that her estranged husband hasn't taken responsibility for his actions. She says he made false accusations against her: Johnson told police she head-butted him.

Lozada says she hopes that by taking a stand, she will encourage other women to "break their silence" on the issue of domestic violence.

The two were married a little over a month ago and their nuptials were to be part of the VH1 reality show "Ev & Ocho" ? but it's now been shelved.

Johnson was cut from the Miami Dolphins the day after his arrest.

Ryan's Presence Injects Entitlement Programs Into The 2012 Race (CHART)

This presidential contest was supposed to be laser-focused on the economy, and the polls have borne that out -- so far. But Mitt Romney's new running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, could quickly throw a wrench in the political calculus.

Ryan's controversial proposals to shift Medicare to a voucher system and to partially privatize Social Security virtually ensures a political brawl over the future of entitlement programs, a longtime political hot potato.

While there's been little polling on entitlement programs specifically, data from surveys commissioned by POLITICO and George Washington University show a tight race between President Obama and Romney on the issue. Obama has held a small lead when it comes to who would better handle Medicare and Social Security, POLITICO noted that it's "a number that could see some movement with Ryan, the architect of Republicans' Medicare and entitlement policy, on the GOP ticket."

A major component of that prediction seems to be how heavily the issue weighs in voters' minds. CNN polling from late June and early July showed that 79 percent of registered voters ranked Social Security and Medicare "extremely" or "very important," a level that rivals other top-tier issues like the economy, unemployment and health care. Not surprisingly, concern over entitlement programs increases with age: The poll also showed that 86 percent of those 50 and older consider entitlement programs extremely or very important, versus 74 percent of those under 50 who said the same.

Democrats are ready to spend lots of time and money bringing attention to entitlements, and that may serve as a good diversion for their cause: President Obama trails Romney on who is viewed as best to handle the economy, 46.5 percent to 43.5 percent in the PollTracker Average.

"The toxic nature of the Ryan budget simply can't be overstated," pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA wrote in a memo. "In Priorities USA Action polling in 2011 and 2012, descriptions of the Ryan budget were consistently and decisively the most effective messages against Romney and Republicans -- better than dozens of others tested. Descriptions of the Ryan plan's impact on education, taxes, Medicare, job training and high-tech research consistently raise 'major doubts' about Romney in over 55 percent of likely voters. Among independent and swing voters, the concerns are even greater."

The impetus for the Ryan proposals -- reducing the federal deficit -- is also important to voters. The same proportion of voters in the CNN poll that considered entitlement programs extremely or very important -- 79 percent -- said the same on reducing the deficit, meaning the Romney campaign can leverage Ryan's presence on the ticket to appeal to those voters.
