Insight: Young Sudan activists push revolt against odds

(Reuters) - Slogans sprayed across walls in a dusty, working-class district of Khartoum are painted over but still convey their message: Sudan's young opposition activists want to bring an Arab Spring to their country and end President Omar Hassan al-Bashir's rule.

The calls for democracy heard across Arab capitals - toppling autocratic leaders in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen since the start of last year - have been late to arrive to Sudan, with demonstrations gathering momentum only since June.

So far, protests have still been small, usually drawing crowds in the hundreds. And they have petered out after the first few weeks in the face of a government response that has included teargas, batons, arrests and - according to Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International - torture.

The government denies using excessive force against protesters or carrying out torture, and dismisses the activists as a handful of agitators with little support among the public. Mainstream opposition parties say they sympathize with protesters, but have been lukewarm at best in support.

Still, a hard core of anti-Bashir activists are trying to spark a popular revolt to end his 23-year rule, devising tactics as they go to overcome the many obstacles to public dissent in the vast, ethnically-divided country.

In interviews with Reuters, underground activists outlined the strategies they hope will eventually bring down the ruling National Congress Party.

"We're not going to make any compromises," a 23-year-old female opposition activist who belongs to the Girifna (We're Fed Up) youth group said in an interview via Skype. "They (the ruling party) have mismanaged the country for 23 years".

A 37-year-old member of Change Now, another of the three main activist groups, speaking to Reuters in a car being driven around Khartoum to avoid surveillance, said: "The alternative we are looking for is a regime that guarantees us dignity, freedom, generous living, expression of our different cultures."

Opposition groups say the triggers that fired Arab Spring uprisings in neighboring countries are present. Many in Sudan's young, growing population are jobless and unlikely to find work in a state grappling with the sudden loss of oil revenues after South Sudan seceded a year ago.

Weeks of protests emerged in June after the NCP imposed cuts in subsidies for fuel and other tough measures to contain an economic crisis brought on by the secession of the South - which cut off Sudan from three quarters of its oil output.

The activists say they are in the fight for the long haul, and accept that they will not topple Bashir as quickly as demonstrators brought down Egypt's Hosni Mubarak last year.

"I really cannot give you a time frame, but I think it's not going to be quick. I really don't think it's going to be Egypt in 18 days at all," said the Girifna activist, referring to the time it took for to topple Mubarak.

Since the start of the demonstrations, security forces have arrested up to 2,000 people, according to a joint report by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.

On Tuesday last week eight people were killed in a protest against rising prices in the western Darfur region.

The government is keen to portray the nascent protest movement as out of touch with most Sudanese.

"I feel that those who are protesting - some of them are genuinely protesting over prices," said Ibrahim Ghandour, a member of the NCP leadership team.

"Others are just trying to take advantage of what is expected from opposition parties, to try to turn it into a total uprising against the government. But ... that was not successful."

Some activists say the harsh government response has only reinforced their determination.

"My detention proved to me that the NCP is more afraid than ever," blogger, Maha Elsanosi, who was detained for 20 hours after a protest, said by email.

Diplomats and analysts watching Sudan say the verdict is still out on how much momentum the protests can gain, but with more cuts in subsidies coming there will be more public anger.

"It's hard to say where the protests are going. So far they lack critical mass but if the economy worsens, more people could take to the streets," a Western diplomat in Khartoum said. "The fuel subsidies have been only partially lifted. Prices will go up further."

FREEDOM TWEETS AND GRAFFITI

The protesters have adopted the social media tactics employed in other Arab Spring uprisings, using the Twitter hashtag #sudanrevolts.

Protests are concentrated on Fridays - the traditional day for prayers in Muslim states when mosque-going crowds can be mobilized. Protesters have given the days names, like "Elbow-Licking Friday", a mocking play on the phrase used by officials to dismiss the demonstrations as futile.

The June demonstrations lost momentum under a withering security crackdown and extreme summer heat.

Activists' call for a protest last Friday to mourn the eight killed in Darfur fell on deaf ears. The imam of the Wad Nubawi mosque where the loudest protests had emerged told worshippers not to use it as a launchpad for future demonstrations.

Many Sudanese express reluctance to take to the streets. Civil servant Ahmed Nour, 40, said he believed the government needed to change, but he did not join demonstrations "because I think these youth protests are motivated by anger only".

"The main problem is that there isn't a leadership to lead this change and there's no hope in the known opposition groups," he said, adding that he feared more violence like in Darfur.

Established opposition parties so far show little sign of joining the protests. The main groups have signed a document calling for strikes and sit-ins to topple the NCP, but have yet to bring large groups of their supporters to the streets.

Sadeq al-Mahdi, head of the opposition Umma party and a two-time former prime minister, told Reuters the group's leadership did not oppose the enthusiasm of young activists, but hoped for a negotiated transfer of power which would minimize bloodshed.

"We are more experienced, and we know ... the rules of the game," he said. "Of course youthful expression will be more idealistic ... enthusiastic, will be more revolutionary."

Getting their message across is harder for protest organizers in Sudan than in other Arab states. The reach of Twitter and Facebook is limited in a mostly rural country where only a tiny percentage of people have Internet access. Few Sudanese have access to the satellite news channels that played such an important role in publicizing the Arab Spring elsewhere.

"The most important thing right now is to spread information," the Girifna activist said. Young protesters use graffiti, zooming through poor neighborhoods after midnight spraying messages like "We're fed up with corruption", "Down with military rule", and "Freedom".

"If I spread my message through Facebook and Twitter, there will only be a certain class that will see it, like the students, young people," said one 28-year-old graffiti activist. "Through graffiti, I reach more people."

Security forces paint over anti-government messages within a day or two, obscuring them but also drawing attention to them.

BEATING SECURITY

The Sudanese protesters have been in touch online with Egyptian, Tunisian and Syrian activists for tips on how to circumvent government security and galvanize support. Activists say they have found a receptive ear among students at the University of Khartoum and educated professionals like lawyers.

"Sudanese lawyers are among the professionals that have had the most clashes with the regime," a lawyer who joined recent Khartoum sit-ins told Reuters, saying he was motivated to protest by the lack of independence of the judiciary.

Urban activists have also been trying to reach out to people in rural areas: "The most effective way to reach people in the provinces is through their children that work in the city, or students who are in Khartoum," said the Change Now activist.

Girifna tries to counter the security forces by maintaining a decentralized structure, without leaders to round up. Members operate in cells, the Girifna member said. Those who want to join send an email introduction. Cell members vet them online, and make checks at their universities or in their communities.

The safest way is to meet face-to-face, but even that comes with risks, as people fear the presence of plainclothes spies.

"It's all about trust," the Girifna activist said.

Samsung accused of, denies employing child labor through Chinese contractor

Despite improvements, working conditions are still a sore point in China -- and China Labor Watch wants to emphasize that no company is exempt from scrutiny. The rights advocacy group claims that, on top of pushing mandatory overtime and poor overall conditions, Samsung contractor HEG Electronics has allegedly been employing at least seven underage workers at a Huizhou plant making phones and DVD players. Not surprisingly, Samsung has been quick to defend itself, asserting that it found "no irregularities" in two separate inspections this year and that it plans a third as a response to the new accusations. Who's telling the truth is still up in the air, although China Labor Watch is taking aim only after going undercover; it's long been suspected that contractors whitewash their labor practices when they see corporate inspectors coming from a mile away. If there's any substance to the allegations, Samsung may be the next tech giant taking action to mend a bruised public image.

A look inside: Retirement Community of Nekoosa | GoRapids ? Your ...

If you?ve ever driven down North Cedar Street in Nekoosa, chances are you?ve seen the Retirement Community of Nekoosa?s large, attractive building and the charming lake in front. If you haven?t, you can find this beautifully maintained facility at 145 North Cedar Street. Besides the main building, which houses 48 Assisted Living residences, there are two smaller buildings which house 8 Independent Living Villas for active seniors. The facility is only 11 years old and was originally known as the Angelus. In 2007, it was purchased by Extendicare, a Milwaukee-based firm specializing in retirement communities and nursing homes, and the name was changed to Retirement Community of Nekoosa.

Susan Berklund, Executive Director of the Retirement Community of Nekoosa, spoke with us about some of the unique benefits of life at the Retirement Community of Nekoosa. Perhaps the most obvious, readily visible to even passers-by, is the presence of a Riverview Medical Center just steps away from the main building.? Besides making routine appointments and checkups much more convenient, it?s reassuring to have a clinic on-site in the event of an urgent health concern. If residents need to see a physician at a local hospital, however, transportation to all local hospitals and clinics is provided. In addition, the Retirement Community of Nekoosa has a part-time nurse on staff and one additional nurse on call 24/7.

Another point of difference Berklund takes pride in is the way the staff goes out of their way to accommodate their residents. ?If some residents come to us and say they?d like to go to the Lowell Senior Center or take a day trip somewhere, we?ll make arrangements to get a group together and make it happen. We do whatever it takes to adapt to their wishes, and we?re always working on new ideas for fun things for them to do.? As an example, she mentions that they take trips to the Rudolph Cheese Factory (Dairy State Cheese) to watch cheese being made and to indulge in some ice cream treats. You can see their focus on the wishes of their residents in their pet policy. Berklund says that ?If someone has a cherished pet, they?re not going to be happy here without it. So our policy is that your pet is welcome here, too.? The facility is also unique in offering a two bathroom suite. ?Most assisted living facilities have just one bathroom in their apartments. As Berklund explained, ?For couples who are used to having their own bathrooms, this works out really well.?

To make it easier for local seniors to get acquainted with Retirement Center of Nekoosa, the facility holds an open house every Wednesday from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. As Berklund says, ?It?s a low-key, comfortable way for both seniors and their caregivers to get acquainted with what we have to offer. Visitors get to mingle with the residents and 9 times out of 10 they find that they already know someone here.? Besides the weekly Open House, Retirement Community of Nekoosa also hosts a Monthly Soup and Sandwich event. Berklund explains that this started last September as a small, invitation-only event intended to encourage local seniors to come by, have a look around, and socialize with the residents, but that it has steadily grown and is now one of the most popular events on their calendar. According to Berklund, ?We get anywhere from 10 to 20 reservations per month, and there?s always room for more to join us.?

In speaking with Berklund, it?s apparent that the facility makes every effort to provide residents with plenty of opportunities to keep busy. ?There?s always someone to visit with and something to do?both indoors and out? says Berklund. She points out the walking trail around Robin Lake, the small lake in front of the main building, and notes that residents are free to fish in the lake as they please. A Card Club group meets every Thursday at 9 am and residents play cards and enjoy baked goods until about 10:30 am. The club is open to the public and local friends of residents often join them. To promote the wellness of residents, the facility offers two levels of exercise classes. The classes have proven so beneficial that local physicians actually recommend them to their patients because they see such improvement in those attending. ?The great thing is that anyone in the community can join the classes free of charge?, says Berklund. For those interested, classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:30 pm.

Besides the outings and activities offered to residents, food is a big part of life at Retirement Community of Nekoosa. Berklund is particularly proud of the quality of food provided by their staff. As Berklund puts it: ?Our Culinary Services Manager, Shelly Knuth, really pays attention to the likes and dislikes of our residents and she goes out of her way to come up with unique and delicious meals.? And with tempting dishes like pumpkin pancakes, lemon crusted cod, bacon ranch potatoes, and tomato basil soup, it?s not hard to believe Berklund when she says that the residents can?t wait to get to the dining room!

While the transition from home to a retirement community is often thought of us as difficult for both residents and their families, Berklund sees another side of this transition: ?Often, the seniors who come here have not had a steady diet and they?ve been lonely and isolated for a long time. Within a couple of weeks, they really start to blossom here. They start socializing with others, they find new friends, and there?s always something to do and places to go.? Besides planned events and outings, the Retirement Community of Nekoosa encourages family gatherings and visits from family. The large community room is ideal for holiday dinners and family get-togethers.

Of course, the big question is ?How much does it cost?? Berklund advises that it?s not easy to quote a price because there are different levels of care offered at Retirement Community of Nekoosa.? ?What makes us unique is that we are all-inclusive. We provide ?extras? such as ? housekeeping, laundry, transportation, personal care?included in our cost. And if additional care is needed, we do whatever we can for residents to remain comfortable here at their home. That includes bringing in medical professionals, hospice workers, whatever is needed?, says Berklund.

For caregivers who are not yet ready to have a family member move in, but need occasional help, Retirement Community of Nekoosa offers Respite Rooms. ?If a family is going away on vacation, or needs a break from caring for a family member, or just wants to see how their Mom or Dad would like being here, we offer a fully furnished apartment where their family member can stay for a weekend, a week, or even up to a month. It?s a great way to try us out and see how they like it here?, explains Berklund.

Berklund encourages anyone interested in learning more about Retirement Community of Nekoosa? to contact the facility for information on availability and rates. Berklund and her staff can be reached at 715-886-5353. More information can also be found online at www.nekoosaretirement.com

Japan's defender Azusa Iwashimizu chats with dejected France's Camille Abilly at the end of their women's football semi final Japan vs France event at Wembley stadium during the London 2012 Olympic Games on Aug. 6, in London.

By Natalia Jimenez, NBC News

It is not often you see players of opposing teams going out of their way to console one another after a game has ended. Their interaction is usually limited to a friendly handshake or pat on the back.

These images of Japan's Azusa Iwashimizu comforting France's Camille Abilly, after Japan defeated France 2-1 in a close semi-final match, stood out from other post-game reaction photos. While we have no way of knowing what words were exchanged between the players (and we can only assume there was a bit of a language barrier between them), their body language speaks for itself. It is clear Iwashimizu took time to try and comfort the distraught Abilly, and Abilly seems to eventually accept her kind gesture.

In such intense competitions, where emotions run high with adrenaline, it is reassuring to know that these Olympians are not only extraordinary athletes, but show true sportsmanship as well.

Jared Lee Loughner To Plead Guilty To Tucson, Arizona Shooting That Injured Gabby Giffords: Report

Jared Lee Loughner will plead guilty to the 2011 shooting in Tucson, Arizona that killed 6 and injured 13, the LA Times reports.

The victims of the January 8th shooting included then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), who was speaking to constituents at public event. Loughner had previously pleaded not guilty.

According to the Associated Press, a court-appointed psychiatrist will testify on Tuesday that Loughner is fit to stand trial. Loughner's guilty plea would result in a sentence of life in prison, a source told the AP.

The Wall Street Journal and Fox News also reported that Loughner will plead guilty.

Loughner has been charged with 49 counts, including murder and attempted assassination of a member of Congress. Among those killed was a federal judge, an aide to Giffords and 9-year-old girl.

Giffords suffered severe brain injuries that damaged her abilities to speak and move. After months of rehabilitation, she returned to Congress in August 2011 to vote on the debt ceiling bill. In January 2012, she announced her resignation.

The shooting has sparked a debate about gun laws in Arizona and across the nation. Critics say that Loughner, who had two previous offenses and a history of unusual behavior, should never have been able to purchase a gun. One survivor called the incident an "extremely tragic example of what is at stake each and every time a gun falls ? or is placed ? in the wrong hands."

Loughner is currently receiving treatment for mental illnesses at a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, where he will remain until a judge decides he is fit to stand trial. He is expected to enter his plea on Tuesday.

Genes Tell Intricate Tale of Jewish Diaspora

A new genetic map paints a comprehensive picture of the 2,000 or so years in which different Jewish groups migrated across the globe, with some becoming genetically isolated units while others seemed to mix and mingle more.

The new findings allow researchers to trace the diaspora, or the historical migration, of the Jews, which began in the sixth century B.C. when the Babylonians conquered the Kingdom of Judah. Some Jews remained in Judah under Babylonian rule, while others fled to Egypt and other parts of the Middle East. Jewish migrations have continued into the present day.

The study researchers found that the genomes of Jewish North African groups are distinct from one another, but that they show linkages to each other absent from their non-Jewish North African neighbors. The findings reveal a history of close-knit communities prone to intermarriage, said study leader Harry Ostrer of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. ?

"Virtually all the Jewish groups we've studied tend to be quite closely related to one another," Ostrer said. "It would seem for most Jewish groups, there is a biological basis for their Jewishness which is based on their sharing of DNA segments."

Tracing Jewish genetics

Ostrer and his colleagues have been studying the genetics of Jewish groups throughout Europe and the Middle East, both to reconstruct the history of the religion and to investigate diseases such as the genetic disorder Tay-Sachs that disproportionately affect this population. In 2010, the group reported on the genetics of seven European and Middle Eastern populations. The new study, published today (Aug. 6) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, expands the findings to a total of 15 groups, with the newest additions from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and the island of Djerba. [Photos: Ancient Jewish Treasure]

The researchers worked with local communities to get volunteers to offer blood samples for genetic analysis. The current study analyzed the genes of 509 unrelated North African individuals, comparing them across groups. Similar work has been done linking ancient Israeli and Syrian people to Ethiopia.

The results revealed close relations between North African and European Jews, Ostrer said. The researchers also found two distinct groups of North African Jews, one comprised of Libyan and Tunisian Jews and the other of Moroccan and Algerian Jews. These groups were more likely to share DNA segments than other Jewish groups, indicating more shared genetic history.

"I like to think of Jewishness as a tapestry with these DNA segments representing the threads that weave the tapestry together," Ostrer said. Non-Jews can convert to Judaism, but membership in the group is also passed down along a matrilineal line, meaning Jewishness straddles the line between religion, ethnicity and culture.

A history of migration

The findings tended to track with what is known of the history of the Jewish Diaspora, or spread of the Jewish people, through North Africa. For example, there was evidence of gene-sharing between North African Jews and non-Jews, but generally not recently, the researchers found.

"This tends to fit the historical observation that during Islamic times from roughly the eighth century to roughly the 20th century, there was limited intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews," Ostrer said.

Among Moroccan and Algerian Jews, there was evidence of some mixing with the Sephardic Jews who trace their roots to the Iberian Peninsula. Again, the genetic results back up the known history of Sephardic Jews leaving Spain and Portugal, with some settling in Morocco and Algeria.

The findings help create a "comprehensive view of what the Jewish Diaspora was like," Ostrer said. Major times of movement included the classic period of Greek and Roman dominance, when Jewish groups migrated out of the Middle East and into Europe and North Africa, converting locals and intermarrying along the way. A second major migration occurred after the Spanish Inquisition in the late 1400s and early 1500s, a time when Jews and Muslims were ordered to convert to Catholicism or leave Spain. [10 Myths of Medieval Torture]

The most recent movement began in the late 1800s and continues today, with immigration to the United States, Israel, Canada, Australia and South Africa, Ostrer said.

The United States and Latin America tend to be a "melting pot" of genetics, Ostrer said ? 50 percent to 60 percent of American Jews marry someone of a different religion or ethnicity ? but the "Old World" genetics of European and North African Jews are helpful in understanding certain diseases.

In these populations, people married within their communities and even within their own families for centuries, allowing studies on relatively few people to be extrapolated more widely throughout the population. In a similar example, researchers recently found a gene that protects against Alzheimer's disease in Icelandic populations. Those results were reported July 21 in the journal Nature. The same sort of research is possible in Jewish populations, Ostrer said.

"It represents an extraordinary resource that is much harder to do, for instance, in the European-American population, because there has been such a melting pot occurring there," he said.
