KING CRIMSON Discipline music review by rogerthat

5 stars Before I get to the review proper, I have to get some background info out of the way. Discipline may have been a rebirth of the King Crimson vehicle which Robert Fripp had seemingly abandoned for good in 1974 (ha!) but it is no ITCOTCK-esque revolution. Bill Bruford once said that you can hear the future of music on a King Crimson album, but on Discipline you can hear its immediate past. Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel, most notably. I don't think the fact that Fripp also contributed guitar solos to Talking Heads makes it his work instead of theirs and to that extent, the sometimes hyperbolic claims made about the originality of this album seem hard to relate to.

With that told, I have to say that Discipline is still an incredible exhibition of musicianship presented in infectious and palatable slices of new wave/rock. When Fripp called time on King Crimson and heavily criticized the 70s rock scene, which he felt was excessive, he had also advocated the "small, smart, self-sufficient, mobile unit". And you cannot say about Fripp that he didn't/doesn't walk the talk - at least not in this connection. Small, smart units of prog is exactly what we get on Discipline. It took 7 years and the introduction of two new musicians in the lineup, but Fripp lived up to his boast.

And not only is Discipline small and smart in its approach, it also overflows with contagious energy of the kind that was sorely missing in prog by the end of the 70s. Where Dave Stewart apparently chose to blast the emergence of supposedly illiterate musicians riding on the 'lack' of talent, Fripp & co deliver to listeners what they had perhaps been missing in the interim.

This is not music that requires a quiet room and high powers of concentration to focus on and appreciate. It leaps out of the stereo and grabs you by the collar, wasting no time in getting across its point. The new wave-ish stylistic orientation masks the astounding level of musicianship on this album. This is a hard enough set of songs to play without having to emulate the energy with which the musicians project it. Thela Hun Gunjeet is on a King Crimson album? You've got to be kidding me. Its riffs hook you in a matter of seconds in ways unthinkable of the earlier avatar of King Crimson.

Even though Discipline is largely a tightly composed affair with next to no room for improvised sections, it doesn't feel like it at all. King Crimson's previous attempts to marry composition with improvisation, incredible as they were, had a studied and calculated air about it. Discipline has an intrinsic spontaneity about it and is a bit silly and quirky, at least by King Crimson standards.

A good measure of credit, or blame depending on the way you see it, for this new found quirk must go to singer and guitarist Adrian Belew. Previous King Crimson vocalists like Lake and Wetton sang the lines relatively neatly with their powerful voices without much by way of a distinct style or trait. Belew's style of singing on the other hand is very distinct, even if it might not be everyone's cup of tea, and lends the album an unique character (not unlike the way Byrne does to Talking Heads).

A minor gripe I have is the album seems to find its magic formula early on and sticks to it to the point where it overstays its welcome a wee bit. Also, the two attempts to break out of the formula, Matte Kudasai and Sheltering Sky, produce mixed results. I think Sheltering Sky might have fared a bit better with me had the tones been a little more to my liking. Matte Kudasai is kind of overwrought and cheesy but not particularly bad and it will pass.

That aside, there's not much more to find fault with in this remarkable effort by an outstanding incarnation of King Crimson. It seems almost too much like stating the obvious to say that it is one of the essentials of 80s music.

Worries about future pummel Zynga shares

(AP) ? Zynga investors are not playing games.

After Zynga's dismal second-quarter earnings report and still dimmer outlook, shares plummeted nearly 40 percent. At least seven analysts downgraded the online games maker and several raised questions about its long-term relevance.

Zynga Inc. cut its full-year guidance sharply Wednesday after reporting a loss and revenue below Wall Street's expectations. Though both user numbers and revenue increased, analysts were expecting much more.

In turn, Goldman Sachs and others downgraded the stock and lowered their target prices.

Problems are myriad for the maker of "FarmVille" and other Facebook games. The company's bleak outlook was due to the sharp drop-off of users of Zynga's most profitable games, delays in developing new games, the growing pull of Facebook's mobile app and because Facebook has changed the way it promotes games, said Goldman's Heath Terry. He cut Zynga to "Neutral" from "Buy."

Zynga's mobile games, such as "Words With Friends," are popular but don't make as much money as the Facebook versions. And Facebook makes up nearly all of Zynga's revenue.

Facebook Inc. recently changed the way it recommends applications to users in a way that favors newer games rather than older ones such as Zynga's "FarmVille." But Cowen analyst Doug Creutz thinks the weak report isn't just about Facebook's changes.

"We are skeptical that Zynga's (paying) player bases on titles like 'FarmVille' and 'CityVille,' which have been around for years, simply forgot to play without proper prompting via their news feed," he wrote in a note to investors. Rather, he said, he thinks users are shifting from PC-based social games to mobile gaming.

"We think this shift is likely permanent and ongoing, threatening Zynga's largest business segment," he said, keeping his "Neutral" rating.

A few analysts remained positive. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian called the quarter a "big reset of expectations" for investors, and the stock will suffer. But he still believes that over the long term, Zynga will benefit from the growing market for social and mobile games. He kept an "Outperform" rating on Zynga's stock but lowered his target price to $6 from $13.

Zynga's stock fell $1.90, or 37.5 percent, to close at $3.18 Thursday. That's its lowest level since Zynga went public in December and nearly 70 percent off its IPO price of $10.

Zynga's bad news dragged Facebook's stock lower too. Shares of the online social networking company dropped $2.50, or 8.5 percent, to $26.84 before Facebook reported its second-quarter earnings, its first as a public company. In 2011, 11 percent of Facebook's revenue came from Zynga.

Acupuncture Provides Much Needed Relief for Those Suffering ...

July 25, 2012 on 10:02 am | By admin | In Daily Health News

Head to a traditional doctor for rheumatoid arthritis relief and he or she will likely prescribe steroids and/or pain pills. What you may not be told is that acupuncture for rheumatoid arthritis can be very helpful. This practice has been around since the sixteenth century. There are different theories as to why it works, but one thing has been shown; it does help those who suffer from this condition. A medical professional should be seen first to ensure that other conditions have been ruled out. Once they have though, you should try acupuncture for rheumatoid arthritis. It may be exactly what you need.

When you undergo acupuncture for rheumatoid arthritis, the practitioner will start by swabbing the areas to be treated with alcohol. A needle, the thickness of a human hair, will be inserted into the site. Your practitioner will determine how many needles should be used for a particular treatment and at what depth they should be placed. The needles will then be left in place for a period of time. Your practitioner may twirl, warm or energize them. You should feel nothing more than a tingling sensation.

Acupuncture is believed to work because it restores the proper qi in the body. When inflammation is present, it is believed that their is an excess of qi. When your rheumatoid arthritis is presenting as dull aches and stiff joints though, this is believed to be a deficiency of qi. Your practitioner will need to adjust your treatment depending on which symptoms you are experiencing. This is expected as the course of rheumatoid arthritis goes from high levels of inflammation at the beginning stages to dull aches and stiffness as it progresses.

When you have acupuncture for rheumatoid arthritis, you can expect the effects to last for two to three days. Be prepared to visit your practitioner frequently for the best results. The benefits are not cumulative either and it can take five or six sessions before you notice any change in your symptoms. This treatment does work as studies have shown. Inflammation can be controlled with this practice although treatment does have to be maintained. If you suffer from this, or any form of arthritis, give acupuncture a try. It may provide much needed relief.

Her.meneutics: When Breast Cancer Leaves You Grasping for Words

Deanna A. Thompson

As a religion professor, I spend my days talking?out loud and on paper?about the really big questions of life. My conversation partners, whether they are students, church members, friends, or family, are living those questions, sorting through inheritances, exploring the gaps, striving to be faithful to what they believe to be true. This profession of mine affords me the privilege of getting to talk about God in ways that are always informed by the questions, claims and wagers of others.

Then cancer came along and interrupted the conversation.

As an expert talker, I suddenly was no expert at all. A novice with a cancer story different from any other I knew. Breast cancer was the diagnosis, but my narrative didn?t include finding a lump, removing a breast or losing any hair. A broken back triggered the stage IV cancer diagnosis and a lousy prognosis: five years out, 80 percent of those who have what I have are dead. My lack of expertise, unfamiliarity with the journey, and fear of what lay ahead conspired against me. Cancer left me tongue-tied, groping for words.

I sought out words from others more familiar with cancer than I. In one cancer memoir I read, the author writes about the scene in the exam room after she learns she has breast cancer. She looks at the doctor through her tears and whispers, ?I?m sorry. I just don?t know how to have cancer.? The doctor puts his hand on her shoulder and says, ?None of us knows how to have cancer.?

Even the cancer experts don?t know how to talk about cancer.

It?s a humble and humbling claim, one I seek comfort in, both in terms of my own bewilderment over how to cope with cancer in my own life and in the lives of others, as well as the challenge of how to deal with those who mean well but offer little comfort at all.

I don?t want to say it?s all relative when it comes to cancer, but those of us with cancer experience and cope with the disease and its effects in wildly different ways. Some passionately protect their privacy; others are exceedingly public with the details. Some head to work every day during treatment; others? lives come to a halt. But something we all share is this: the havoc that cancer creates in our lives and in the lives of those who love?or simply interact with?us.

How, then, do you have cancer? And how do you talk about it?

On good days, when someone makes a comment I disagree with or says something insensitive or just plain wrong, I remind myself that none of us knows how to have cancer.

On good days, I realize a person who makes an inappropriate comment overcame the temptation to say nothing at all, which (theoretically) I appreciate. Rather than ignoring my cancer, this person?however awkwardly?is acknowledging cancer?s invasion into my life.

On good days, I attempt to be gracious, even when the comments sting. I?m a professor; I adopt an educative role, explaining why their point of view differs from my own.

Not all days are good days.

hopingformore.jpg

In fact, many days with cancer are bad days. On those days, I?m not so magnanimous in my response. Rather than greeting awkward attempts at consolation with gravitas, I get offended, angry, hurt. On bad days, my retorts to off-the-mark comments often offend in return. Close friends and family tell me I have no reason to feel badly about my sharp replies. That it?s not my job to take care of others and their misguided assumptions.

But it?s not that easy: all of us continue to make mistakes when talking about cancer. The mistakes, the imperfections?what Christians might call ?sin??these are the reasons why I, as a Christian, am stuck on hope. As someone who can never quite get it right, I?m always hoping for more in this life?more chances to be gracious, kind, loving. Beyond these basic hopes, new hopes for this life have become important, too: hope for continued inactivity of the cancer in my body and in the bodies of so many others, for psychological and spiritual courage to live with this disease, for the gift of living long enough to see my daughters grow into adulthood.

In addition to hoping for more in this life, I also hope for more beyond. I hope that the promises of God are true: that there is more to life beyond this earthly one; and that in that life beyond there will be no more crying, no more dying, only light, only love, only joy.

I hope and pray that my future includes many more years in this life. But I realize that my future in this life may be brief. I struggle to accept it all with grace: the gifts and the grief. In the midst of the uncertainty, I live in hope: for what?s before me and for the more beyond.

Deanna Thompson is professor of religion at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, and author of Hoping for More: Having Cancer, Talking Faith, and Accepting Grace, from which this essay is excerpted. Read more at HopingforMore.com.

Drought Devastates U.S. Maize and Soya Crops

maize, soya, agriculture, drough A farmer inspects his drought-damaged maize crop in Illinois ? just one of several states affected by scarce June rainfall. Image: Bloomberg via Getty Images

From Nature magazine

Scorching temperatures and scarce rainfall has left large swathes of the United States in drought, with the 'breadbasket states', such as Iowa and Indiana, among the worst affected. The extreme weather conditions have wreaked havoc with the nation?s crop production, particularly maize (corn) and soya beans. Given that the country is the world?s top exporter of maize and one of the largest growers of soya beans, Nature explains how the drought could have ramifications for global food supplies, and what science is doing to help.

How extreme are the weather conditions?
Average temperatures on the US mainland in June peaked at 21.8 ?C, which is 1.1 ?C above the twentieth-century average, according to the National Climatic Data Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Silver Spring, Maryland. The June temperatures meant that the first half of 2012 was one of the warmest on record, and contributed to the warmest 12-month period in the United States since records began in 1895. On average, just 5.8 centimetres of rain fell in June ? 1.6 cm less than normal, making June 2012 the tenth driest on record, says NOAA. As of 3 July, more than half of the 48 contiguous US states had seen drought conditions, the largest percentage for the past 12 years, according to the US Drought Monitor service, run by the National Drought Mitigation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

And there is not much relief in sight. Dry weather is expected to continue into August in the southern to central Plains, across the Gulf coast and along the west coast, according to NOAA.

How much damage has been done?
On 18 July, nearly 1,300 counties across 29 states were declared ?natural disaster areas? by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a result of crop damage and loss caused by the drought and heat.

The USDA also cut its maize and soya bean estimates for the year on 11 July. The projected US maize yield is down 1.3 tonnes per hectare to 3.7 tonnes per hectare, a total of 45 million tonnes less than was predicted in June. Estimates of total US soya bean production are also down by 4.2 million tonnes to 83 million tonnes compared with June, contributing to a sizeable overall drop in predicted US oilseed production for 2012?13.

?Persistent and extreme June dryness across the central and Eastern corn belt and extreme late June and early July heat from the central Plains to the Ohio River Valley have substantially lowered yield prospects across most of the major growing regions,? says the July issue of the USDA's monthly report, World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates.

How have the crop losses affected prices?
The United States exports 53% of the world's maize and almost 43% of soya beans globally, so any change in the US supply of these crops will affect prices worldwide. The price of maize last week hit a record US$8.16 per bushel ($321 per tonne), and traders think that prices could rise above $9 per bushel by early August unless there is a significant change in the weather. That seems unlikely at the moment, says Maximo Torero, a food-market and trade analyst at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington DC. Prices of soya beans are also up by almost 30% since the beginning of June, and by almost 60% since the end of last year, he says.

How does this compare to the food crisis in 2008?
The prices of soya beans and maize have passed the 2008 peak. But wheat, rice and oil prices have not matched their 2008 highs, so that will help to stave off a similar crisis, says Torero. There is also no sign of the export restrictions that were put in place in 2008 that further exacerbated prices.

Who will feel the effects most?
The direct impact of the increase in maize and soya bean prices will be felt in net importing countries such as Mexico and China. The price hikes are unlikely to affect sub-Saharan Africa directly, because people there tend to consume locally produced maize and are not major consumers of soya beans, says Torero.

Pakistan polio drive hit by murder of health worker

The push to eradicate polio from the world took more than one bullet last week. On 20 July, Muhammad Ishaq, a local worker with Pakistan's polio eradication programme, was shot dead in Gadap, a district of Karachi in southern Pakistan.

Three days earlier polio drives in the area were suspended when a Ghanaian doctor and his driver were shot and wounded as they drove through Gadap.

The shootings follow a ban on polio vaccination in northern Pakistan, declared in June by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a Taliban commander. Bahadur is using the ban as an attempt to force a halt to US drone attacks.

Hostility to polio vaccination also rose after US agents used vaccination campaigns to gain access to families during the search for Osama bin Laden. A Pakistani physician alleged to have helped the CIA was sentenced to 33 years in prison in May.

Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only countries where wild polio virus persists, with Pakistan considered the toughest hold-out. Gadap is one of three strongholds of the virus in Pakistan, and as an urban area with many migrant families it is a source of outbreaks elsewhere in the country.

Hopes had risen that the programme was working, as no cases of polio have been reported in Karachi so far this year, after nine last year. Also, an independent assessment of the polio eradication drive reported in June that water samples from Gadap were virus-free. The assessors attributed the progress to local workers ? like Ishaq.
