JERUSALEM, Israel - Israel?will block any influx of Syrian refugees into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Thursday as Syrian rebels pressed home a campaign to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.
"They (refugees) have not chosen to come close to us, but in the event of the regime's downfall, which could happen..., (Israeli forces) here are alert and ready, and if we have to stop waves of refugees, we will stop them," Barak said while gazing across the frontier, fighting visible in the distance.
An Israeli defence source noted that Barak, in his comments, spoke only about preventing a flood of refugees, apparently not closing the door completely to Syrians seeking safety.
Barak was speaking to reporters at an Israeli forward position on the occupied Golan Heights, territory captured from Syria in a 1967 war. An Israeli security fence separates the Golan from Syria, to the northeast, along a disengagement line that has been quiet for decades.
Some two km (1.2 mile) away, smoke from mortar shells could be seen billowing over the Syrian village of Jubata and gunfire was heard as Syrian insurgents kept up pressure in a 16-month-old revolt against Assad.
Israel's army chief, Benny Gantz, said in January that it was preparing to take in Syrian refugees from Assad's minority Alawite sect who might flee if he fell. The rebels are mainly from Syria's majority Sunni Muslim community.
A senior Israeli officer told journalists at the Syrian border in March that the military had made preparations with international agencies to accept refugees from Syria temporarily and later transfer them to a third country.
But the officer said at the time that a scenario of Syrians crossing over to Israeli lines was unlikely.
Israel annexed the Golan in 1981, a move not recognized internationally. It gave the Druze there, who today number about 20,000, the option of citizenship. Most rejected it.
The U.N. refugee agency last month doubled its forecast for the number of refugees who will flee Syria this year to 185,000.
Turkey, which stretches along Syria's northern border, has given shelter to more than 50,000 Syrians since March 2011 but thousands have since returned to their homes.

This is more of a personal story than a list of facts, but here it is anyway:
From the standpoint of metabolism and adrenal recovery, caffeine is not the most helpful. It can tax the adrenals and spike cortisol making it difficult to completely restore the metabolism.
It is also used as a ?diet aid?, as it can suppress the appetite and artificially speed up the system. This can only work for so long, eventually causing burnout, crashing and probably a slower system altogether in the long run.

I have been very addicted to coffee in the past. It was a crutch to my ?intuitive eating?, and I would use it to stretch the time and hunger in between my ?intuitive meals?. This was at a time when I was not eating very many carbs, and coffee was not only my appetite suppression, but my energy. I would always drink coffee with cream and no sugar. It was always the thing that I would go for if I was hungry but it wasn?t mealtime and I needed something to tie me over- it was very much my ?happy? little vice.
It got to the point where no matter how much caffeine I drank, I didn?t feel a thing, yet I always craved it.
And while I don?t think that a life without coffee is anything that needs to be remedied, (if you don?t drink coffee, I am not telling you to start) my attempts at cutting out coffee completely made me sad! I really like coffee. I like the taste and I like the morning ritual. I didn?t want to be addicted to it, but I didn?t want to live without it completely either.
Of course we know that anything can be used and abused, coffee being a prime example of that, and caffeine is also addictive (they tell me). But after a few months without coffee at all (and upping my carbs) I decided to add it back in, thanks to reading Ray Peat.
He is a fan of coffee and claims that it supports the thyroid. How does that information compete with the evidence that it depletes your adrenals? No clue. One is wrong, both are wrong, one is right, one is wrong. Both are right. I don?t care. However, he always suggests it be consumed with food, or at least sugar. so it doesn?t spike and crash your blood sugar, which I have taken to heart.
So, I started back in with one in the morning with my breakfast?.
and guess what??
Having more carbs in general in my diet, makes me crave coffee way less as the day goes on. My body isn?t crying out for energy and stimulation as much as its used to be. And when I think I want a coffee in the afternoon like I used to have (due to boredom, or thirst, or hunger) imagining myself actually drinking a coffee?-I realize I do not actually want it at all.
I happened to get my blood tested one morning after my coffee in that first week that I had added coffee back in, and the results came back without any elevated cortisol, so?. booya!
One cup (often a STRONG one) in the morning seems to end up being enough.
And I am very thrilled by the moderation?
Note: This is not a very scientific post?. obviously, but I figure some of you would like to know that a small to moderate amount of coffee isn?t going to senselessly ravage your adrenals.
Still, don?t forget about sleeping, working on stress, and eating food over drinking coffee, and you can probably indulge moderately.
So Fuck It! And drink a little coffee if you want.
Be the first to like this.

(Reuters) - Weakness in Verizon Communications Inc's enterprise business offset a better-than-expected wireless quarter, sending the telephone company's shares down 2.9 percent.
After pushing Verizon's shares up 14 percent so far this year, investors focused in on the wireline miss on Thursday even as Verizon handily beat Wall Street estimates for wireless subscriber growth and profitability.
While earnings per share (EPS) met Wall Street expectations for the quarter, analyst said that wasn't enough.
"The view by investors is that wireline stole the EPS benefit of a great wireless quarter," Nomura analyst Michael McCormack said.
Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo told analysts on a conference call that Verizon's enterprise business was hurt by foreign exchange rates and a decision to stop selling some customer equipment and, to a lesser extent, by macroeconomic challenges in Europe.
But McCormack said the world economy's impact may have been understated.
"The global economy may be more sluggish than people believe at this point. It seems (for) anything outside large multinationals, you're seeing very sluggish buying behavior," he said.
Verizon's wireline revenue fell 3.4 percent in the quarter to $9.93 billion compared with Wall Street expectations of $10.03 billion, according to the company.
PRICE INCREASES
While Verizon saw strong revenue growth in its consumer wireline business, Shammo said its addition of 120,000 net new FiOS television customers was weaker than it expected as an unusually high number of people moved from the FiOS region.
Shammo said Verizon was reducing its target estimate for future FiOS TV growth to 150,000 to 170,000 from its previous estimate of 180,000 to 200,000 as the company is increasing its prices to focus more on the profitability of the service.
The executive told Reuters that he expects Verizon's wireline revenue growth rate from consumer services to rise to 5 percent by the end of the year from 2.5 percent in the second quarter as the company plans more price increases.
The company raised prices in the second quarter with service packages that include higher Internet speeds, but Shammo warned there would be more price increases for TV bundles.
"We started in the second quarter but there's more on the plate for the third and fourth quarter," Shammo said.
Guggenheim Securities analyst Sing Yin said consumers may have no choice but to pay higher fees for TV as programmers increase their rates. He also expects them to embrace pricier Internet services.
"They're counting on consumers being willing to pay more for better speed. So far, there is evidence there is demand for higher speeds at higher prices," Yin said.
WIRELESS BEATS ESTIMATES
In response to rumors about a dividend payment, Shammo said that the board of the company's Verizon Wireless venture with Vodafone Group Plc does not plan to discuss a distribution at its next quarterly board meeting.
Vodafone shares fell 1.7 percent in London trading after the comment.
Verizon Wireless added 888,000 net new subscribers in the quarter, compared with the average expectation of about 666,000 of seven analysts.
"That's a terrific number," Roe Equity Research analyst Kevin Roe said, noting that Wall Street does not expect No. 2 mobile provider AT&T Inc to add even half as many customers in the quarter.
The growth at the No. 1 U.S. mobile provider probably came at the expense of smaller rivals Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA in particular, as those companies have been struggling to stem customer losses, Roe said.
The company said that 50 percent of its wireless customers were using smartphones by the end of the second quarter, up from 47 percent at the end of the first quarter. Since smartphone customers spend more than customers with basic phones, Verizon has been pushing to increase its smartphone penetration.
Verizon Wireless launched new shared data service plans June 28 that raised its data fees in exchange for letting customers connect multiple devices under one plan. The plan is aimed at getting consumers to more devices to its network[ID:nL1E8HC3EE].
While the shared data launch was too late in the quarter to have an effect on the company's results, Shammo said that early consumer feedback had been "great."
Verizon's wireless service margin based on earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization was 49 percent, ahead of average estimates of five analysts for just above 47 percent.
Verizon's second-quarter profit rose to $1.83 billion, or 64 cents per share, from $1.61 billion, or 57 cents per share, a year earlier. The results were in line with analysts' estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Revenue rose to $28.552 billion from $27.54 billion, while analysts were expecting $28.558 billion.
Verizon said on Thursday that its 2012 capital spending would be little changed or lower than its 2011 budget of $16.2 billion. During the company's last earnings call, Shammo had expected 2012 spending to be about the same as in 2011.
The company said it was on track for growth in full-year earnings in the double-digit percentage range, implying a rise of at least 10 percent.
It expected profit margins in its wireline business to continue to improve in the second half of the year after increasing in the second quarter from the first quarter.
Verizon hopes to improve earnings by reducing costs in negotiations for new terms for a labor contract covering 45,000 workers but the company appeared to be nowhere nearer to an agreement on Thursday almost a year after its workers went on strike to protest the cuts Verizon wants to make.
On Thursday afternoon, Verizon's unions said they had requested mediation services for the talks because they had gone on too long. Verizon had no immediate comment, but Shammo had told analysts on the earnings conference call that negotiations were difficult.
Verizon's shares closed down $1.35, or 2.9 percent, at $44.54 on New York Stock Exchange, which was still up 11 percent from the end of 2011.

Macho men whose partners earn more than they do have worse romantic relationships, in part because the difference in income is a strain for them, according to a new study by Patrick Coughlin and Jay Wade from Fordham University in the US. Conversely, men who are not so traditional in their masculinity do not place as much importance on the difference in income and, as a result, appear to have better quality relationships with their female partner. The work is published online in Springer's journal Sex Roles.
The breadwinner role for men is still the accepted norm in marriage, and allows for and supports the husband's power and authority in the family. It is therefore reasonable for a man who earns less than his female partner to feel removed from this traditional gender role, and feel a void because he does not fulfil this role. However, the reality is that marriages in which both the husband and wife work are becoming the rule rather than the exception. It is increasingly possible for both partners to either earn equal amounts, or for the female to earn more than the male.
Coughlin and Wade were interested in the effects of this growing trend on the experience of marriage and the quality of romantic relationships in particular. Is the extent of men's masculinity ideology, in other words, emotional control, success, dominance, violence, power, and anti-femininity and homophobia, an influential factor on relationship quality?
A total of 47 men, who were involved in a romantic relationship, and had a female partner who had a higher income, took part in the study. Through an online survey, the researchers assessed their beliefs about masculinity, the quality of their relationships, and the importance of the disparity in income between them and their female partners.
They found, on the one hand, that the stronger a man's endorsement of traditional masculinity ideology, the more likely he was to report a low-quality romantic relationship, and the more he perceived the difference in incomes as important. On the other hand, the more a man endorsed non-traditional masculinity ideology, the more likely he was to have a high-quality relationship with his female partner and not place too much importance on the income disparity.
The authors conclude: "Our results demonstrate the importance of masculinity ideology in understanding how and why men with higher-earning partners will have low or high quality romantic relationships. The findings are relevant to men who are married as well as non-married men in a romantic relationship."

Everyone seems to be on the paid surveys bandwagon these days. Now that it is common knowledge that paid surveys are the easiest way to make extra money online more people than ever are joining online research panels. And new survey panels are popping up every day. So which ones are the best?
Well, the truth is there is no single panel that is better than all of the others. Every survey is targeted to a specific demographic. So you never really know which panel is going to have a project that matches your profile on any given day. However, there are some companies that can make it easier for you to qualify than others. These companies offer ?daily surveys?
Daily surveys are becoming more and more popular because they give the user the opportunity to participate every day. Daily surveys are usually not as high paying as some other targeted surveys, but they are a lot easier to qualify for. This is because a research panel will put all of the projects they are currently working on in one router so that when the user visits the router they can simply enter a few demographic questions and the router will check to see if there are any projects that match the users demographics. If so the user will be directed to the survey and have a good chance of qualifying.
Since the router is so random all surveys taken through the daily router are priced the same. Most pay between $1 and $2. Although they do not pay as well as other individual surveys you have the opportunity to earn more with them than you might from other higher paying individual surveys. This is because most survey panels will only have a survey for you every so often. So reaching their payout minimum can take some time. With daily surveys you can attempt to participate every day. Many panels have multiple daily routers so that you can take several surveys each day. This makes it easy to reach payout and receive payments often.
While some people would prefer to only take higher paying surveys and only get the chance to participate here and there others enjoy the ease and consistency of taking paid surveys daily. The bottom line is it?s just a matter of opinion. The choice is yours. For the best experience with paid surveys it is best to join a panel that has a combination of individual surveys as well as daily surveys so that you can still participate when a targeted survey isn?t available.
Chris Price is the co-owner of?Palm Research, a San Diego, CA based market research company. Palm Research was founded in 2009 and is one of the most popular providers of?paid surveys?in the world.

Tip 1: Spend within your Means
The initial step you need to take is to know how much you spend monthly and how much you are earning; spend only within your earnings never exceed it. The best way to implement is to stay away from your credit cards; when you are in financial difficulties, credit cards dig a deeper financial hole for you. If there are some emergencies arising and you are in need of instant cash you can opt for a payday loan, it will provide you with the cash instantly and you can pay it back with your next paycheck.
Tip 2: Organise your Finances
If you neglect paying your bills on time and ignore your credit card payments thinking that you can do that later on, it would ultimately lead you in late payment fees and penalties. This could also lead you in tarnished credit reports and a lower credit score. To avoid such situations the first thing you need to do is to be financially organised. Prepare a cash-flow calendar for everyone in the home who earns money. Then write down which bills are to be paid on what dates and by whom. This will help to get in a good financial position and become more financially stable.
Tip 3: Track your Expenses
It is very important for you to know where your earnings are being spent. Keep a proper track of all your spending?s for a month this will give you a detailed plan who is spending how much and where. Then according to your spending?s in the house you can prepare a monthly budget plan covering all the necessities and save up some money for the future requirements.
Tip 4: Improve your Credit
If your credit reports are becoming weak because of your recent spending, then work on improving it. Start to prepare a plan for repayments of your debts; initially begin to pay with a smaller amount and then increase it gradually. Your recent payments will create a stronger impact on your credit score and ultimately improve it.
By following each of the above mentioned tips you pave your way to a stronger financial ground.

Hopefully, you haven't paired up your Nissan Leaf with a GE WattStation for charging; if you have, you might want to power up with Ye Olde Wall Outlet for a short while. GE has confirmed to the New York Times that some Leaf drivers have encountered "problems" after charging up their EVs from WattStations. What problems? GE isn't going into detail, but a Nissan regional manager claims that the the charging systems of 11 Leafs have been damaged after plugging into a WattStation. Whether or not there's a crisis or a coincidence is still up in the air at this stage. Nissan isn't issuing any warnings or recalls, and GE will only say that it's "actively working" with the automaker to find the root cause. All the same, we'll be cautious until the companies turn a new... you guessed it.
Update: GE reached out to us with the full statement, which you'll find in the comments below. The company is mostly touching on what it mentioned earlier, but it's adding that the WattStation meets the needed SAE and UL standards. Other EVs haven't encountered problems to date.
