LONDON (AP) ? Ecuadorean officials said Monday that their government is still considering whether to grant asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who walked into Ecuador's embassy in London on June 19 with a plea for refuge. Ecuador's leftist leader has long expressed sympathy for the 41-year-old Assange and his secret-spilling organization. Here are the basics on Assange's bizarre bid for sanctuary:
WHY IS JULIAN ASSANGE STILL HOLED UP IN ECUADOR'S EMBASSY?
The WikiLeaks chief wants to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning about alleged sex crimes. He has spent the last two years contesting his removal through Britain's courts. After the Supreme Court rejected his appeal to reopen the case in June, Assange had exhausted his legal options in Britain. In response, he made his unlikely move to win political asylum in Ecuador.
ASSANGE INSISTS HE IS NOT GUILTY OF SEXUAL WRONGDOING, SO WHY DOESN'T HE JUST GO TO SWEDEN?
Assange insists that the attempt to send him to Sweden is simply the first step in a plan to fly him to the United States, where officials are investigating him and WikiLeaks over its disclosures of classified information. He claims he already faces a secret indictment in the United States. Many legal experts say it isn't clear why it would be easier to extradite Assange from Sweden than from Britain.
HOW IS ASSANGE LIVING INSIDE THE EMBASSY?
Assange is living and working pretty much as normal inside a small office that also serves as his bedroom. Supporters say he could continue to reside in the embassy, close to the world famous Harrods store in upscale Knightsbridge, for months. Gavin MacFadyen, a supporter and director of the Center for Investigative Journalism at London's City University, has visited Assange inside the building and says that while "it's not quite the Hilton," embassy staffers are "jolly" and getting along well with the activist. The building has about five or six rooms and previously was an apartment. Assange has a bed, access to a phone and a connection to the Internet. He can also receive guests, though the space is cramped. The crowded embassy is in sharp contrast to Assange's last permanent address ? Ellingham Hall, a supporter's elegant country house on vast grounds in eastern England.
WHAT IS TAKING ECUADOR SO LONG TO DECIDE?
Ecuador's ambassador to London, Anna Alban, flew to Quito on June 23 to personally brief President Rafael Correa on the case, raising expectations of a speedy resolution. Since then, however, Ecuador has said little publicly over the affair. Ecuador's foreign ministry says lawyers are studying the political and legal implications of granting Assange asylum. Embassy spokeswoman Priscilla Kohn said Monday that it simply wasn't possible to say when the case would finally be decided.
WHAT HAPPENS IF ASSANGE LEAVES THE EMBASSY?
Assange has ignored a letter from Scotland Yard demanding that he report to a police station as the first step in his planned removal to Sweden. He insists that his asylum case takes legal precedence. British police can't arrest Assange while he remains inside the red-brick embassy because diplomatic protocol prevents them from entering, but if he steps outside, they will be ready to swoop. Assange has been told he will be arrested for breaching the terms of his bail, which included an overnight curfew at a registered address. On Saturday, a court-imposed deadline for Assange to be sent to Sweden passed.

WellPoint is aiming to profit from the Supreme Court?s recent decision to uphold most of President Barack Obama?s health care law.
The health insurer said Monday it will buy rival Amerigroup for about $4.9 billion in a bid to capture a larger share of the growing number of recipients of the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs.
The deal follows the U.S. Supreme Court?s decision to uphold Obama?s healthcare legislation, which requires all Americans to have health insurance. It is expected to increase the number of Americans who have access to state-sponsored health care programs.
WellPoint said the transaction will, upon completion, allow the combined company to serve more than 4.5 million beneficiaries of these health care programs and allow WellPoint to increase its footprint to 19 states.
In early June WellPoint, which is looking to diversify its sources of revenue, agreed to acquire contact lens retailer 1-800 Contacts from private equity company Fenway Partners.
The Amerigroup acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013 and will be financed with cash, commercial paper and new debt, the companies said.

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? An international team that includes scientists from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has published a reconstruction of the climate in northern Europe over the last 2,000 years based on the information provided by tree-rings. Professor Dr. Jan Esper's group at the Institute of Geography at JGU used tree-ring density measurements from sub-fossil pine trees originating from Finnish Lapland to produce a reconstruction reaching back to 138 BC. In so doing, the researchers have been able for the first time to precisely demonstrate that the long-term trend over the past two millennia has been towards climatic cooling.
"We found that previous estimates of historical temperatures during the Roman era and the Middle Ages were too low," says Esper. "Such findings are also significant with regard to climate policy, as they will influence the way today's climate changes are seen in context of historical warm periods." The new study has been published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
Was the climate during Roman and Medieval times warmer than today? And why are these earlier warm periods important when assessing the global climate changes we are experiencing today? The discipline of paleoclimatology attempts to answer such questions. Scientists analyze indirect evidence of climate variability, such as ice cores and ocean sediments, and so reconstruct the climate of the past. The annual growth rings in trees are the most important witnesses over the past 1,000 to 2,000 years as they indicate how warm and cool past climate conditions were.
Researchers from Germany, Finland, Scotland, and Switzerland examined tree-ring density profiles in trees from Finnish Lapland. In this cold environment, trees often collapse into one of the numerous lakes, where they remain well preserved for thousands of years.
The international research team used these density measurements from sub-fossil pine trees in northern Scandinavia to create a sequence reaching back to 138 BC. The density measurements correlate closely with the summer temperatures in this area on the edge of the Nordic taiga; the researchers were thus able to create a temperature reconstruction of unprecedented quality. The reconstruction provides a high-resolution representation of temperature patterns in the Roman and Medieval Warm periods, but also shows the cold phases that occurred during the Migration Period and the later Little Ice Age.
In addition to the cold and warm phases, the new climate curve also exhibits a phenomenon that was not expected in this form. For the first time, researchers have now been able to use the data derived from tree-rings to precisely calculate a much longer-term cooling trend that has been playing out over the past 2,000 years. Their findings demonstrate that this trend involves a cooling of -0.3?C per millennium due to gradual changes to the position of the sun and an increase in the distance between the Earth and the sun.
"This figure we calculated may not seem particularly significant," says Esper, "however, it is also not negligible when compared to global warming, which up to now has been less than 1?C. Our results suggest that the large-scale climate reconstruction shown by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) likely underestimate this long-term cooling trend over the past few millennia."

KABUL?? A man Afghan officials say is a member of the Taliban shot dead a woman accused of adultery in front of a crowd near Kabul, a video obtained by Reuters showed, a sign that the austere Islamist group dictates law even near the Afghan capital.
Only on msnbc.com
In the three-minute video, a turban-clad man approaches a woman kneeling in the dirt and shoots her five times at close range with an automatic rifle, to cheers of jubilation from the 150 or so men watching in a village in Parwan province.
"Allah warns us not to get close to adultery because it's the wrong way," another man says as the shooter gets closer to the woman. "It is the order of Allah that she be executed".
Provincial Governor Basir Salangi said the video, obtained on Saturday, was shot a week ago in the village of Qimchok in Shinwari district, about an hour's drive from Kabul.
Such rare public punishment was a painful reminder to Afghan authorities of the Taliban's 1996-2001 period in power, and it raised concern about the treatment of Afghan women 11 years into the NATO-led war against Taliban insurgents.
The video was revealed the same day Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was in Kabul to discuss the designation of Afghanistan as the newest U.S. "major non-NATO ally," a political statement of support for the country's long-term stability and a solidifying of close defense cooperation after American combat troops withdraw in 2014.
Story: US delivers 'powerful commitment' to Afghanistan"When I saw this video, I closed my eyes ... The woman was not guilty; the Taliban are guilty," Salangi told Reuters.
When the unnamed woman, most of her body tightly wrapped in a shawl, fell sideways after being shot several times in the head, the spectators chanted: "Long live the Afghan mujahideen! (Islamist fighters)", a name the Taliban use for themselves.
The Taliban could not be reached for comment.
Despite the presence of over 130,000 foreign troops and 300,000 Afghan soldiers and police, the Taliban have managed to resurge beyond their traditional bastions of the south and east, extending their reach into once more peaceful areas like Parwan.
Women's rights in jeopardy?
Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and work since the Taliban, who deemed them un-Islamic for women, were toppled by U.S.-backed Afghan forces in late 2001.
But fears are rising among Afghan women, some lawmakers and rights activists that such freedoms could be traded away as the Afghan government and the United States pursue talks with the Taliban to secure a peaceful end to the war.
Violence against women has increased sharply in the past year, according to Afghanistan's independent human rights commission. Activists say there is waning interest in women's rights on the part of President Hamid Karzai's government.
"After 10 years (of foreign intervention), and only a few kilometers from Kabul... how could this happen in front of all these people?" female lawmaker Fawzia Koofi said of the public execution in Parwan.
Afghanistan schoolgirls: poisoned or mass hysteria?"This is happening under a government that claims to have made so much progress in women's rights, claims to have changed women's lives, and this is unacceptable. It is a huge step backwards," said Koofi, a campaigner for girls' education who wants to run in the 2014 presidential election.
Salangi said two Taliban commanders were sexually involved with the woman in Parwan, either through rape or romantically, and decided to torture her and then kill her to settle a dispute between the two of them.
Afghans are 'no different from any American'"They are outlaws, murderers, and like savages they killed the woman," he said, adding that the Taliban exerted considerable sway in his province.
Earlier this week a 30-year-old woman and two of her children were beheaded in eastern Afghanistan by a man police said was her divorced husband, the latest of a string of so-called "honor killings".
Some Afghans still refer to Taliban courts for settling disputes, viewing government bodies as corrupt or unreliable. The courts use sharia (Islamic law), which prescribes punishments such as stonings and executions.
