Frequently recommended in weight-loss diets, dietary proteins have proven effectiveness thanks to their appetite-suppressing effects. A team led by Gilles Mithieux, Director of Inserm's Unit 855 "Nutrition and the Brain" in Lyon, has managed to explain the biological mechanisms behind these properties. The researchers describe in detail the chain reactions triggered by digesting proteins, sending a 'satiety' message to the brain long after a meal. Their results, published on 5 July in the Cell review, will make it possible envisage improved care for obese or overweight patients.

The team of researchers from Inserm, CNRS and the Universit Clause Bernard Lyon 1 has managed to shed light on the sensation of fullness experienced several hours after a protein-rich meal. This sensation is explained by messages exchanged between the digestive system and the brain, initiated by the dietary proteins that are mainly found in meat, fish, eggs or even some cereal-based products.

In previous studies, researchers proved that consuming dietary proteins triggers glucose synthesis in the intestine, after periods of food assimilation (a function known as gluconeogenesis). The glucose that is released in the blood circulation (portal vein) is detected by the nervous system, which sends an "appetite-suppressing" signal to the brain. Best-known in the liver and kidneys from which it supplies other organs with sugar, gluconeogenesis in the intestine sends an "appetite-suppressing" message after meals, characteristic of the sensation of "fullness".

In this new study, the researchers managed to accurately describe how digesting proteins triggers a double-loop of chain reactions involving the ventral (via the vagus nerve) and dorsal (via the spinal cord) peripheral nervous systems.

The in-depth study of biological mechanisms identified the specific receptors (?-opioid receptors ) found in the portal vein nervous system, at the outlet of the intestine. These receptors are inhibited by oligo-peptides, produced during protein digestion.

In an initial phase, the oglio-peptides act upon the ?-opioid receptors, which send a message through the vagus nerve and the spinal chord to areas of the brain specially-designed to receive these messages.

During a second phase, the brain sends a return-message that triggers gluconeogenesis via the intestine. The intestine then sends the "appetite-suppressing" message to areas of the brain that control food intake, such as the hypothalamus

  1. Consumption of dietary proteins
  2. Protein residues (oligo-peptides) travel to the intestine in the portal vein
  3. Recognition of oligo-peptides by ?-opioid receptors
  4. Receipt of peripheral signals
  5. Gluconeogenesis induction
  6. "Appetite-suppressing" message sent to brain

Identifying these receptors and their role in intestinal gluconeogenesis paves the way to explore new avenues for the treatment of obesity. The challenge is now to determine how to act on the ?-opioid receptors to control the fullness sensation over long periods. According to Gilles Mithieux, the leading author in the study: "If used too intensely, these receptors may become insensitive. A means of activating them 'moderately' must be found, thus retaining their long-term beneficial effects on controlling food intake".

Two and a Half Weeks ? Adelinavixen's Blog

Well. I hope everyone had a spectacular Fourth of July for those who are Americans! I know I certainly did. :)

my family always kicks off the Fourth on the third of July with a huge reunion. Surprisingly, I actually like this family reunion. We always have home made root-beer, TONS of food, and a few fun games. it?s nice to catch up with the family members you know and like.

I say ?know? because my family is so large, half our family probably doesn?t know the other half. It?s entertaining when a family member comes up to me, calls me by name, asks me how my art/schooling/life is going, then leaves without me ever figuring out their name or if they?re really family.

We get a lot of friends coming to our reunions as well. This year, I had my Laxer Bro tag along for fun. The fam. had fun heckling him. He took it pretty well. My nephews all ran up to him the second he got there, too. Heck, my youngest nephew could say his name before mine. They had fun playing together and having us watch them go down a giant-bouncy-slide-water-thing.

The actual Fourth typically starts off with many of my family members running the local races. I usually participate; however, this time I was helping my mom hand out water to the runners who came by our house. Then we all cram into cars and take off to the park to catch the parade. It?s dee beeeeest! Seriously. Usually I can?t stand parades, but with my town, it?s something different. I know half of it is because I am biased and know the majority of the people in the parade, but the other half is because I always get a kick out of the local? ideas and jokes everyone comes up with for the floats.

The majority of the rest of the day is spent at the epic craft fair in the park. There are also a lot of fun little attractions for the kids to do. Snow Basin even brought down actual snow from the mountain. WOOT! Snow. In the park. In the middle of July. A snowball fight definitely ensued.

My family always has another B-B-Q to follow. This year, we all had a water fight. Sadly, we could only let off small fireworks (like snakes and poppers) due to the major fire danger this season. But, the town let off the big ones!

Laxer Bro and a group of friends and I all went to our park where the fireworks were going to be let off to enjoy the show. The cool thing about our fireworks is that they?re shot off right above the park, so they burst right over everyone?s head. Oh, and cue the music! The town always has patriotic music playing loud enough to hear through the blasts and bangs of the firework show. Just after the fireworks ended, it started to rain. I call that a perfect ending to a day. I love the rain!

On a different note, I?m looking for fun suggestions to keep me very busy over the next two and a half weeks! So if you?ve been somewhere fun or done something fun lately, let me know so I can try it out! Laxer Bro is out of town during that time period, and I need to keep my mind active. So lemme have it!

Healthy Ways for Men to Gain Muscle - Fitness Bootcamp Blog

Healthy Ways for Men to Gain MuscleMen with high metabolisms will do just about anything to go from skinny to muscle. After all, it?s no fun being the wimpy-looking guy. If you?re doing all you can to gain muscle but it?s still not working for you, you can pack on muscle using these healthy methods.

Diet to Gain Muscle

If you want to gain muscle, you have to eat the right way. This means protein, protein, and more protein! Protein-rich foods such as beef, eggs, poultry, beans, and dairy products help build muscle while helping you recover from workouts faster. Pair your protein with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit for a well-rounded diet.

While we?re talking about what you need to eat to pack on muscle, it?s also just as important to know what to avoid. Processed foods are a big one. When you?re trying to gain muscle and trim down, the last thing you want to are eat fast-food cheeseburgers and burritos. Carbs are another food group to cut down on. The bulk of your nutrients should come from protein, healthy fat, vegetables, and fruit.

When you?re working out to gain muscle, you need to eat more often. Eating small meals every 2 ? to 3 hours will help you stay satisfied. Don?t stuff yourself full before a workout but never go hungry or you?ll slow your natural metabolism.

Exercise to Pack on Muscle

When you?re trying to pack on muscle, you?ve got to train the right way. This means less cardio and more intense strength training. Using heavy weights do intense lifting on one part of your body one day and alternate to another part of your body the next. These rest periods are just as important as hard periods of exercise.

Speaking of rest periods, if you?ve done hard strength training one day, switch it up with recovery cardio exercises. This means hitting the stationary bike, the hiking trail, the swimming pool, or the racquet ball court. Any low-intensity exercise that keeps your heartbeat under 120 beats per minute is a great way to get good exercise without losing muscle mass.

Supplements to Go from Skinny to Muscle?

There are too many disreputable companies out there selling synthetic growth hormones to unsuspecting men. If you want to go from skinny to muscle without side effects, you have to know which supplements to use:

Beta-Alanine ? Men who do high intensity training will benefit especially from this natural amino acid. Beta-Alanine increases lean muscle mass and controls the build-up of lactic acid in your muscles, reducing muscular soreness and speeding recovery time.

Creatine ? Creatine is a natural amino acid that helps increase muscle mass and helps you gain muscle fast. The catch is you have to work out. If you down this stuff without burning it off, you won?t gain muscle, you?ll gain a spare tire.

Whey Protein ? When you?re really trying to pack on muscle, you can?t always get the amount of protein you need from your meals. This is where protein supplements come in. Consuming a whey protein supplement 30 minutes after a workout can help repair damaged muscle tissue and speed recovery time.

When you gain muscle, you gain confidence. No man wants to push you around and women are naturally drawn to you. Don?t mess around with synthetic growth hormones to get the body you want, turn to natural methods and pack on muscle the healthy way.

Loss of protein SPDEF allows prostate cancer cells to gain foothold at possible sites of metastasis

Loss of protein SPDEF allows prostate cancer cells to gain foothold at possible sites of metastasis

Friday, July 6, 2012

Prostate cancer doesn't kill in the prostate ? it's the disease's metastasis to other tissues that can be fatal. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published this week in the Journal of Biological Chemistry shows that prostate cancer cells containing the protein SPDEF continue to grow at the same pace as their SPDEF- cousins, but that these SPDEF+ cells are unable to survive at possible sites of metastasis.

"It's as if these cancer cells with SPDEF can't chew into distant tissue and so are unable to make new homes," says Hari Koul, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and director of urology research at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the study's senior author.

Koul and his group discovered the homesteading power of cancer cells that have lost SPDEF by introducing a gene into cells that makes them glow in the presence of a dye, and then introducing them into the bloodstream of animal models. Cells without SPDEF traveled through the blood and successfully attached to tissue, surviving and so fluorescing many weeks later when dye was introduced. However, cells with SPDEF flowed through the blood but were unable to successfully establish new colonies and so soon died out.

In fact, the protein SPDEF doesn't act directly to allow cells to attach at possible metastasis sites, but is a transcription factor that controls the production (or lack thereof) of two other proteins MMP9 and MMP13. These two downstream proteins work to break down tissue, like a dissolving agent ? they are the cleaning crew that clears space for new and different growth, and in the case of prostate cancer metastasis they chip the tissue footholds that cancer cells need to create micrometastases.

"Given that MMP9 and perhaps MMP13 are also involved in metastasis of several other cancers including lung, ovarian, breast and colon to name a few, our findings could potentially have far-reaching consequences outside prostate cancer," adds Koul

The group's continuing work points in two directions.

"First, we hope that the presence of SPDEF could help doctors recognize prostate cancers that don't require treatment." If future studies confirm the group's initial findings, the presence of SPDEF could predict prostate cancers that are unable to metastasize and so unable to kill. These cancers could be left to run their course without the use of treatments that sometimes carry difficult side effects.

"And second," Koul says, "we hope to regulate expression of this protein to remove prostate cancers' ability to metastasize."

Koul points to small molecules, gene therapy or nanodelivery as possible mechanisms for introducing SPDEF into cells that lack the protein.

"With this discovery we have opened a hopeful door into a future in which prostate and potentially other cancers are unable to metastasize," Koul says.

Whatever you do, don?t challenge a chimpanzee named Ayumu to a number memory game. ?

In 2007, Ayumu became famous for his lightning speed at a game that goes like this: A player views a computer screen where the numbers 1 through 9 appear briefly at once and then turn to white squares. The player then taps the squares where the numbers had been, in order from 1 to 9. People can do it. But no human competitor has ever completed the game faster or more accurately than Ayumu. Now scientists think they may know the secret to the chimp's success.

Quad-core, 2GB, LTE Samsung Galaxy S III hitting Korea on July 9

Android Central

Looks like Samsung was saving the best Galaxy S III for last -- and for its home territory of South Korea. A post on the Samsung Tomorrow blog reveals that the manufacturer is preparing to launch the S III in Korea with a quad-core Exynos 4 CPU, 2GB of RAM and 4G LTE connectivity. Compare that to the European version, which sports quad-core Exynos, but no 4G and only 1GB of RAM, or the North American model, featuring LTE and 2GB of RAM, but a dual-core Snapdragon CPU instead.

The Korean Galaxy S III will launch on the SK Telecom, Korea Telecom and LG U+ carriers, with different radios to suit each network. The trade-off for this extra connectivity and power is that the Korean S III is a little bulkier, weighing 4.88 oz compared to 4.7 for the international model, and measuring 9mm thick versus 8.6mm elsewhere. Other specs remain identical -- same 8MP rear camera, 4.8-inch HD SuperAMOLED screen and TouchWiz'd Android 4.0. There's also 32GB of internal storage.

Given the specific hardware and radios needed for the Korean market, it's unlikely that Samsung will ship these units internationally, and don't expect to be able to use it on any American or European networks if you do import one. If you're in Korea, though, you're in luck -- you'll be able to pick up the mother of all Galaxy S IIIs from July 9.
