Among Latinos, Mitt Romney Trumped By Barack Obama's Immigration Message

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama faced off -- a day apart -- this week in an attempt to woo Latino voters and address their policies on immigration.

Judging by the candidates' receptions from crowds at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials conference, Obama won. He appeared more relaxed, got more applause, and was more insistent on the need for immigration reform.

It wasn't that Romney was entering a lion's den. Although a majority of Latinos are Democrats, most members of NALEO serve in non-partisan positions, no matter their personal opinions. His reception was warm, but not overwhelming, and paled in retrospect to the previous greetings for fellow Republicans Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R).

Obama brought the crowd to its feet several times Friday, as he talked about immigration reform, health care and education. He enacted a policy last week that many Latinos had long called for, halting deportations of some young, undocumented immigrants.

He was greeted like a "conquering hero," tweeted Ana Navarro, who served as national Hispanic co-chair for GOP presidential candidate John McCain in 2008.

"Obama giving my Democrat colleagues a lot more to work with, than Romney gave me yesterday at ?#NALEO?," she tweeted. "It ain't going to be easy, folks."

One problem, some attendees said, was that Romney glossed over the issues of undocumented young people, saying only that he favored major reform.

Matt Barreto, a pollster with the non-partisan firm Latino Decisions, said Romney's speech was good but had telling omissions.

"He sort of cherry-picked the immigration ideas that are very popular," Barreto said Thursday. "It doesn't sidestep the larger issue, and the larger issue is, what is your policy [on undocumented immigrants] going to be, and what about this insane idea of self-deport?"

Miami-Dade County school board member Raquel Regalado, a Republican, said she wanted more details from both candidates on a number of immigration issues. She is still undecided on who to vote for, but said she was glad to get "a little bit more information than the usual soundbite."

"I did like the fact that [Romney] came out and said something," said another Republican, Tony Rosado, the mayor of Mascotte, Fla. He added that Democrats have only discussed the Dream Act, while Romney laid out a more expansive plan.

Even Democrats gave Romney credit for taking on the issue of immigration in a more pro-reform way. Attendees from both parties said Romney is making the right call by backing away, at least rhetorically, from the hardline talk he employed on immigration earlier in the campaign.

Janet Murguia, president of the non-partisan National Council of La Raza, said, "it felt like he was starting to pivot to talk with some more specificity" on immigration reform. "The question is whether he will be successful in the pivot here."

That remains the big "if" here. His campaign has furiously released statements -- six in barely more than 24 hours -- from Latino supporters, such as Reps. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) and Quico Canseco (R-Texas), all discussing the economy.

Romney likely would have rather talked about the economy, too. It has been the focus of his campaign messages to Hispanic voters, who usually rank it at the top of their priorities and have suffered higher-than-average unemployment.

Bush skipped over immigration entirely in his speech Thursday, opting to discuss education instead, and when Rubio spoke Friday, he said he felt pushed to talk about immigration because of the president's recent directive halting deportations of some undocumented young people.

"I've abandoned my hopes of only talking about the economy and jobs, as important as that may be, for one moment and one day in the hopes of speaking to you about the issue of immigration," Rubio said.

Chicago alderman Rey Colon, a Democrat, said Romney's speech took a better tone than his previous remarks on immigration, but he was concerned by some of the "trigger words," such as a reference to high-tech border fencing, that might point to increasing enforcement rather than broader reform.

Still, he said he was glad he was able to hear from Romney. "I always think, maybe I drank the Kool-Aid and I need to hear a different perspective on things," Colon said.

Democrat Steve Castaneda, the deputy mayor of Chula Vista, Calif., said that some of Romney's ideas on immigration are good ones and likely will appeal to Latino voters. "The problem is getting Latino voters, or at least the majority of Latino voters, to believe him," he said.

Taliban kill at least nine in Kabul hotel siege

NATO UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters fly near the Spozhmai Hotel in Qargha lake in the outskirts of Kabul in the early hours of Friday.

By Cheryll Simpson, NBC News in Kabul and Reuters

Updated at 3:47 a.m. ET Friday: KABUL ? Guests swam for their lives after Taliban gunmen attacked a lakeside hotel in Afghanistan, killing at least nine people and taking 50 others hostage in a siege lasting several hours, according to reports.

At least five militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns attacked the exclusive Spozhmai hotel in the Qargha Lake recreation area around midnight local time on Thursday (3:30 p.m. ET) bursting into a private party and shooting dead hotel workers.

Many terrified guests jumped into the lake in darkness to escape the carnage, according to Afghan officials and local residents.

The local police chief told NBC News that all five insurgents were killed, along with at least nine others including three hotel guards, a policeman and five civilians. The Associated Press quoted local police as saying the civilian death toll was 12, and details remained sketchy.

Reuters journalist Hamid Shalizi reported there were ?a number? of casualties, and that the guests were a party of wealthy Afghans.

NBC News producer Cheryll Simpson reported via Twitter that heavy gunfire could be heard from the hotel, which is about six miles from the center of Kabul.

Ahmad Jamshid / AP

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the hotel was used for ?prostitution, alcohol and immorality,? she reported.

Elite Afghan quick-response police backed by NATO troops had freed the remaining hostages and killed the gunmen in an operation that only began in earnest after sunrise to help security forces avoid unnecessary civilian deaths in night-time confusion.

Two NATO attack helicopters could be seen over the single-story hotel building and a balcony popular with guests for its sunset views.

'Crime against humanity'
The incident again highlighted the ability of the Afghan Taliban to stage high-profile attacks even as NATO nations prepare to withdraw most combat troops by the end of 2014, leaving Afghan forces to take the lead against the insurgency.

Authorities are about midway through a transition process during which security responsibility is being handed from NATO-led foreign troops to Afghan forces.

"This is a crime against humanity because they targeted children, women and civilians picnicking at the lake. There wasn't even a single soldier around there," said General Mohammad Zahir, head of the Kabul police investigation unit.

A pall of smoke hung over the hotel and television pictures showed people wading out of the lake onto a balcony and clambering over a wall to safety.

Police and soldiers fanned out around the hotel at dawn, arriving in cars and armored Humvee vehicles and taking cover behind trees flanking the lake and a nearby golf course.

Resident Nasir Ahmad said his brother, who worked in the Spozhmai hotel, the most exclusive of several around the scenic lake, told him many people had been killed.

Qargha Lake is one of Kabul's few options for weekend getaways. Restaurants and hotels that dot the shore are popular with Afghan government officials and businessmen, particularly on Thursday nights.

Guests at the Spozhmai must pass through hotel security before entering the hotel, where tables with umbrellas overlook the water, but security is relatively light for a city vulnerable to militant attacks.

Targets include foreigners
Violence across Afghanistan has surged in recent days, with three U.S. soldiers and more than a dozen civilians killed in successive attacks, mostly in the country's east where NATO-led forces have focused their efforts during the summer fighting months.

Several well-planned assaults in Kabul in the past year have raised questions about whether the Taliban and their al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network allies have shifted tactics to embrace high-profile attacks targeting landmarks, foreigners and Afghanistan's elite, extending a guerrilla war once primarily waged in the countryside.

Afghan insurgents attacked Kabul's heavily protected diplomatic and government district on April 15 in an assault, eventually quelled by Afghan special forces guided by Western mentors, similar to one in September 2011.

President Hamid Karzai told a special session of parliament on Thursday that attacks by insurgents against Afghan police and soldiers were increasing as most foreign combat troops prepare to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014.?

Jennifer Williams' Woes Continue: Basketball Wives Star to Lose Bentley

When it rains, it pours for reality star Jennifer Williams these days.

Not only are reports suggesting Shaunie O'Neal had Royce Reed, Jennifer Williams and Kesha Nichols fired from Basketball Wives, she's about to have her Bentley repossessed after being slapped with an unpaid bill for more than $92,000.

That and she was slapped by Nia Crooks literally. Rough month!

Basketball Wives' Jennifer Williams

The Toyota Motor Credit Corporation in Syosset, N.Y., just filed a lawsuit against Williams, claiming she stopped making payments on her 2006 Bentley.

In 2009. According to the lawsuit, TMCC has made attempts to peacefully repossess the vehicle ... but was unsuccessful. Now it's going the legal route.

TMCC is also demanding Williams pay her full balance: $92,310.

A rep for J-Dub said: "Jennifer hasn't been served documents in reference to this lawsuit. Anything related to community property acquired during the marriage, such as the car, is an issue that is currently being addressed in her divorce proceedings."

Basically ... she's hoping Eric Williams will be on the hook.

Unethical LP Solution Providers ? Day 1 of NRFLP 2012 - Retail ...

One of the main aspects of Loss Prevention that I have always admired is the moral compass within the close knit group of men and women who make up the space. ?They believe that they should be held to higher standard and they act as such. ?Because their vocation is about preventing loss and theft and because they must protect their employers, they feel that they themselves must be moral and ethical in how they conduct themselves and how they represent their employers. ?This is highly commendable and I see it in practice at every event that I attend.

What I have come to learn over the last 6 months and I have had re-enforced today is that there are some solution providers in this space whose actions are diametrically opposed to those upheld by retail loss prevention. ?In fact, their behavior is downright unethical and could be borderline illegal. ?And it is sad. ?There is an unwritten rule at trade shows. ?Competitors are co-located together in the same space. ?But, there is a mutual respect for each other. ?In fact, I consider folks at some of our competitors to be friends. ?But, we do not cross the line. ?You respect one another?s space. ?You do not listen in on their conversations or try to watch semi-private demos. ?And you do not send your people to their booth pretending to be someone else and try to steal their ideas. ?Otherwise, these shows will collapse. ?Vendors will snipe other vendors and so some vendors will stop attending.

What I have seen today tells me is that some vendors don?t follow this unwritten rule and will in fact lie to spy on others. ?Not only is this uncool, but it is unethical (and if they implement what they learned from us in their software, then it is illegal).

Today I had a competitor come by the booth. ?I was in the middle of a very detailed demo to a journalist. ?They had their name badge covered. ?This is standard practice for someone trying to commit subterfuge and learn your secrets. ?So, I paused and asked her where she was from. ?In most situations, this is where the person admits where they are from and politely excuses themselves. ?It is the right thing to do.

This woman, however, had the audacity to lie to me and say she was from Sony and she wanted to partner with us. ?This turned out to be untrue. ?A blatant lie. ?She was from a competitor. ?And she proceeded to take notes and ask detailed questions.

I learned after the fact that she was lying and where she worked. ?I will not call the company out publicly. ?This will be addressed privately. ?But, I will warn retailers that this is happening and I consider it highly unethical. ?Before you do business with a vendor it?s best to ensure that they act in a ethical manner. ?After all, if they are willing to lie, what else are the capable of? ?Is your data safe with them?

I will also say that since this vendor now has seen detailed information about our product and received this information in an unethical manner, that they have no ethics and will attempt to steal our features for their product. ?We spend a lot of time and money to make our product unique and to offer cutting edge technologies and features that will benefit our customers. ? They already stole our marketing messages and our website messaging. ? They spent the last week and a half downloading every page on our website. ?They might as well call themselves Agilence.

The fact they think they can steal our ideas sickens me.

Iran impasse to stir sanctions pressure, tensions

MOSCOW/LONDON (Reuters) - Western diplomatic efforts to curb Iran's nuclear program may not have breathed their last but the troubled process appears to be on life support after talks this week failed to resolve a row stirring regional tensions and unsettling oil markets.

Mindful of a possible Israel strike, both Iran and its negotiating partners are keen to pursue even a minimal level of contact to shore up the process despite the failure of the negotiations in Moscow on Monday and Tuesday.

A technical discussion is scheduled for July 3 in Istanbul, but no further political talks have been agreed. The West, suspicious Tehran is working towards a nuclear bomb, is due to introduce hard-hitting trade sanctions in the two weeks before that.

"Diplomacy in now on a respirator," said Cliff Kupchan of the Eurasia Group consultancy. "Both sides underestimated the difficulty of moving talks forward. How little progress was made underlines how far apart the sides are on substance."

U.S.-based Iran expert Trita Parsi said if a compromise was not vigorously pursued, "war will become far more likely."

"It really does seem like the Iranians just haven't made the decision to accept limits on their nuclear program," a Western diplomat said.

"If they haven't made that decision then all the talking in the world really isn't going to get us anywhere."

"Iran really pressed for this experts meeting and Russia wanted it so we agreed to do it. It doesn't feel to us like there is a lot of progress that is going to be made even there.

"(But) nobody is going to shut the door entirely."

The six powers - the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany - want Iran to scale back its nuclear work and, in particular, stop enriching uranium to levels that could bring it close to making an atom bomb.

Last month, and again in Moscow, the powers asked Tehran to shut down the Fordow underground facility where uranium is being enriched to the 20-percent level of fissile purity and ship any stockpile out of the country.

IRAN SEEKS SANCTIONS RELIEF

In return, they have offered fuel to keep Iran's medical isotope reactor running, assistance in nuclear safety and an end to a ban on spare parts for Iran's ageing civilian aircraft.

Iran denies its work has any military purpose and says the powers should offer it relief from sanctions and acknowledge its right to enriching uranium before it meets their demands.

New U.S. and European sanctions are due to come into effect in the next two weeks. In addition to totally banning Iranian oil imports, the EU measures prohibit European insurers from covering Iranian oil exports anywhere in the world, which would leave importers exposed to personal injury and pollution claims.

Western officials are suggesting that even further punitive measures may now be in prospect.

After the Moscow discussions broke up, a senior U.S. administration official said the talks would not go on indefinitely and Tehran should expect more sanctions if it fails to address international suspicions over the nature of its work.

"Sanctions will be increasing. We have told the Iranians there will be more pressure coming if this (lack of progress) proceeds forward," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

There was no immediate world from Israeli officials on the failure of the Moscow talks.

PRESSURE WILL RATCHET UP

But on June 4, a U.S. official was quoted as saying the United States was conferring with Israel about new sanctions planned against Iran should the Moscow talks fail.

"If we don't get a breakthrough in Moscow there is no question we will continue to ratchet up the pressure," said David Cohen, U.S. Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, Haaretz newspaper reported.

The comment offered a strong hint that Washington is continuing to apply the brakes on any plan by Israel to attack Iranian nuclear facilities preemptively.

In Paris, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France would continue to strengthen sanctions against Iran. Some analysts say they suspect U.S. President Barack Obama, seeking a second term in November elections, cannot afford politically to make concessions to Tehran right now.

TALKS SEEN AVERTING ISRAELI STRIKE RISK

The Democratic White House has strongly rejected a Republican charge that Obama, who sought to ease 30 years of enmity with Iran after he came to power in early 2009, has shown a lack of resolve abroad.

Bijan Khajehpour, an Iranian and managing partner of Atieh International, a Vienna-based consultancy on the Middle East, told Reuters there were two reasons why the two sides were prepared to engage without a clear result.

One of them was that the continuation of such contacts, both sides calculated, reduced the risk of an Israeli strike.

The other reason was that either side suspected time would change the strategic situation in their favor.

"Western governments think the sanctions will bite further, Iran will come to its knee and then it will be more willing to compromise," he said. "From the Iranian perspective, the Americans have an election and it is not clear whether Obama will win 'so let's just wait and see what happens'."

Meir Javedanfar, lecturer on Iranian politics at Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel, said that despite the failure of the Moscow gathering diplomacy was not dead.

Neither side would want to show that it was not interested in diplomacy as the costs at home and abroad would be high, he said. "It just means that for this route to succeed, more time and effort will be needed. Until then, both sides will try to use their own leverages to pressure the other side to compromise at the next round, whenever that may be."
