The crew of China's Shenzhou 9 space docking mission met reporters today (June 15) at the country's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center ahead of Saturday's planned launch at 6:37 p.m. local time (6:37 a.m. EDT or 1037 GMT). The three astronauts, or taikonauts as China's spaceflyers are known, include male crewmembers Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and the country's first woman to fly in space: the 34-year-old Liu Yang.

"I am grateful to the motherland and the people," Liu Yang said in a press conference according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. "I feel honored to fly into space on behalf of hundreds of millions of female Chinese citizens."

Liu and her crewmates will blast off atop a Long March 2F rocket and fly their Shenzhou 9 space capsule to China's Tiangong 1 laboratory module, which is a prototype space station that has been orbiting Earth since last September. It is China's fourth human spaceflight since 2003 and the first to actually rendezvous with a target in orbit.

The Shenzhou 9 astronauts are expected to perform at least two docking tests, one manual and the other automatic, and spend several days living and working inside the Tiangong 1 lab, said Wu Ping, spokeswoman for the China Manned Space Engineering Office that oversees China's human spaceflight program. China's fourth space crew revealed

Liu and her two crewmates are all former pilots with the People's Liberation Army and members of the Communist Party of China, Xinhua reported.

As China's first woman to fly in space, Liu was selected from a field? female military pilots to join China's astronaut corps. She joined China's Air Force in 1997 and served in the Wuhan Flight Unit before being selected for the astronaut program.

Another female Chinese pilot, Wang Yaping, was also in the running to fly on the Shenzhou 9 crew. Liu currently holds the rank of major, Xinhua reported. [Women in Space: A Gallery of Firsts]

"China's first female astronaut in space ? will be the 56th woman to fly into space out of the more than 500 people that have made it into orbit worldwide," said space history and artifacts expert Robert Pearlman, editor of collectSPACE.com, a SPACE.com partner site. "The first woman in space, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was launched on June 16, 1963. If Shenzhou 9 launches on Saturday, it will be exactly 49 years to the day after Tereshkova's historic first flight."

Alleged Zeta horse trainer wins release order

(AP) ? A federal judge ruled Monday that a Texas horse trainer charged with conspiring to launder money for Mexico's powerful Zetas drug cartel should be released on bail, rejecting the prosecution's argument that the threat of cartel reprisals against him was so severe it could harm the surrounding community.

Eusevio Maldonado Huitron remained in custody because federal prosecutors said they will appeal the decision. But the defense told The Austin American-Statesman hours later that the U.S. Attorney's Office had withdrawn its objections, clearing the way for Maldonado Huitron's release soon.

Maldonado Huitron ran a horse farm in Bastrop County southeast of Austin and is among 15 people charged with helping the Zetas launder millions of dollars through quarter horse operations in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and California.

After listening to a string of witnesses in a bail hearing that stretched over two days, U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew Austin said he was setting conditions for Maldonado Huitron's release, but he didn't immediately make them public.

Prosecutors conceded that they had no evidence Maldonado Huitron was violent but said there was a risk he could flee to Mexico and disappear given his family ties in that country. However, the greater danger in releasing him from federal custody, they argued, was the threat posed by the Zetas targeting him and his family ? and by extension, the community at large.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Fernald said she was limited on what she could say in open court prior to trial. But she argued that Maldonado Huitron should remain in custody given the "nature and seriousness of the danger to any member of the community," due to both "the nature of this organization and the seriousness of the potential retaliation, not just to him but to his family members and anyone else."

That argument was based on testimony Friday from FBI agent Haskell Wilkins, who said the defendant was a serious flight risk due to the possibility he could be targeted by the Zetas.

But Maldonado Huitron's attorney, assistant federal Public Defender Jose Gonzalez-Falla, countered Monday that "we haven't heard anything to indicate" his client's guilt. He said prosecutors' arguments of "'trust us, it's in the indictment'" is not enough.

Gonzalez-Falla said Maldonado Huitron is an illiterate horse trainer who poses no threat to the Zetas. An associate of Huitron Maldonado's from El Paso testified Monday that the trainer was actually dismissed weeks before his arrest because his horses were underperforming, which the defense attorney said meant his client was now even less important in the eyes of the cartel.

"Why on earth would they hit my client?" he asked. "What has he done? He's a horse trainer."

Also testifying Monday was Huitron Maldonado's brother, Jesus, who when asked if he knew what the Zetas were answered through an interpreter, "just what you hear on TV."

"From what they say, they killed a lot of people in Mexico and then they toss the bodies out," the elder Huitron Maldonado testified.

Gonzalez-Falla said his client had a right to get paid for his services no matter who hired him, adding that the government's arguments were based only on "a bunch of rumors about receiving some money." He said prosecutors feared the ferociousness of any possible reprisals, "just because they're the Zetas and they're bad and they kill people and take their heads off."

"What does that have to do with my client?" he asked.

Austin sided with the defense, saying Maldonado Huitron's family might be targeted, but that the threat was no less acute if the defendant was in prison. He said the only risk to the lager community he could see might be "someone's horse might get beat in a race if Mr. Huitron trains the horse."

Austin also said he appreciated the flight risk but couldn't imagine the defendant fleeing to Mexico given how powerful the Zetas are there.

Maldonado Huitron is "frankly, a lot better off in the United States than in Mexico, which is the only place I can see he'd flee to," the judge said.

Teenage Pregnancy Remains Main Factor in Rwandan Dropout Rate

Teenage Pregnancy Remains Main Factor in Rwandan Dropout Rate

Teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and early marriage account for the majority of school dropouts here. Throughout Rwanda, teen moms are forced to drop out of primary and secondary school because they can?t afford school fees or are forced to care for the baby alone. A photo essay.

KIGALI, RWANDA ? Benitha Nyiranizeyimana, 14, got pregnant when she was in fifth grade in Kigali, Rwanda?s capital. She says she eventually dropped out of school because her mother couldn?t afford to pay her education fees on top of supporting her and her new baby.
Benitha?s boyfriend, the baby?s father, sometimes brings milk and money to help support their baby. The young mom says the baby is healthy, and she loves him very much.
For every 1,000 girls ages 15 to 19 in Rwanda, there are more than 40 births, according to UNICEF. Teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and early marriage account for the majority of school dropouts here. The dropout rate is 11.4 percent in primary school and 7.5 percent in high school, according to Rwanda?s Ministry of Education.
In general, women don?t start to use contraception until they have had at least one child, according to the preliminary results of the 2010 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey. The use of contraception increases with education level, but many girls drop out of school once they become pregnant.
Josiane Mukanyandwi, 17, got pregnant for the first time at age 14 after she was raped. The baby died, and the man who raped her is in prison.
She got pregnant again after having a consensual relationship with her former employer, but he was a married man. She used to work as a domestic helper in his family?s home, but they kicked her out once she became pregnant. The baby?s father does not provide any financial support.
A family that Josiane did not know took her and her baby in. She dropped out of school and now does household chores for the family in exchange for room and board. She says she also spends this time reflecting on her life.

Doctors cite concern for patients, colleagues top motives for working sick

An unwavering work ethic is a hallmark of many health professionals. But a new survey finds that when a doctor is sick, staunch dedication can have unintended consequences.

A poll of 150 attendees of an American College of Physicians meeting in 2010 revealed that more than half of resident physicians had worked with flu-like symptoms at least once in the last year. One in six reported working sick on three or more occasions during the year, according to the survey conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. Notably, when asked whether they believed they'd ever directly transmitted an illness to a patient, nearly 10 percent of respondents answered yes. More than 20 percent believed other residents had passed on an illness to a patient.

The results published in the Archives of Internal Medicine are further evidence of a culture of self-sacrifice long prevalent in medicine. Researchers say a physician's sense of loyalty to already-overwhelmed peers, along with a commitment to patient care, often conflicts with an ethical stance against exposing patients and staff to an illness or compromised performance. Unfortunately, most find health care cultures to be well established and incredibly stubborn.

"Resisting the pressure to work when ill can be particularly difficult for young doctors," said study author Anupam B. Jena, MD, PhD, an internal medicine resident at the Massachusetts General Hospital and an alumnus of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. "A work-first, self-second attitude is often seen as ideal among peers, superiors and even patients."

In the first known account of the reasons for the phenomenon known as "presenteeism" among doctors-in-training, more than half of respondents cited obligation to colleagues who'd be forced to cover their duties or an obligation to patient care as the top reasons for not taking a sick day. Far fewer, 12 percent, indicated they'd worked when ill due to concerns their colleagues would think they were "weak" and 8 percent came to work sick because they felt pressured to repay colleagues for coverage.

Seniority appeared to be a factor in the results, as second-year residents were more likely than first-years to select responsibility to patient care as a reason for presenteeism. Gender differences were brought to light with female residents more likely to work sick and cite patient care as the reason. Female residents were also more likely to report fear of being perceived as weak as a motive for not taking time off.

While time away from the office carries a similar stigma in other high-pressure professions, an executive showing up sick to the boardroom is far less worrisome than a doctor with the flu treating patients. An otherwise healthy doctor can often recover quickly, but an infected patient with an already-compromised immune system may not.

The study authors are calling for presenteeism to be better identified and addressed by medical educators and residency leaders. They acknowledge that the recent Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) mandate that doctors be deemed "fit for duty" is a good start.

"In addition, adequate systems of coverage and occupational health guidelines should be established regarding working when ill," said Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP, one of the study's authors and an associate professor of medicine and associate program director of the internal medicine residency at the University of Chicago Medicine. "Faculty should ensure residents are taught that refraining from work while ill is the best and most professional way to ensure responsible and safe care for patients."

About the University of Chicago Medicine

When the University of Chicago Medical Center opened its doors to the community in fall 1927, it had two clinical departments: medicine and surgery. Since then, the medical campus has grown to include 60 adult and 44 pediatric specialties. The Medical Center ranks among the best in the country in cancer treatment, digestive disorders, diabetes and endocrinology, according to U.S. News & World Report's survey of the nation's hospitals. University of Chicago physician-scientists performed the first organ transplant and the first bone marrow transplant in animal models, the first successful living-donor liver transplant, the first hormone therapy for cancer and the first successful application of cancer chemotherapy. Its researchers discovered REM sleep and were the first to describe several of the sleep stages. Twelve of the Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with the University of Chicago Medicine.
