T-Mobile updates us on 4G LTE - News - Know Your Cell

T-Mobile gave an update on its 4G LTE rollout?plans and it said that the trials are set for this summer, while commercial services will be ready for 2013.?

In a blog post, T-Mobile said it has "fast progress" on this 4G LTE rollout. Verizon and AT&T have already rolled out its 4G LTE networks (these are blazing fast, by the way) and Sprint already has a phone out that can use 4G LTE, even if its network isn't up and running yet. T-Mobile is still trying to catch up with the competitors.?

T-Mobile also said that this upgrade to its equipment could already be seen, as its HSPA+ network is working in the 1900 MHz spectrum. We saw this when it "coincidentally" enabled "4G" for the iPhone?in the conference area where Apple was holding WWDC.?

T-Mobile is still a bit outgunned compared to some of the larger carriers but that doesn't appear to be stopping it from improving its network. Hopefully, by this time next year, consumers will be able to get 4G LTE phones from at least four major mobile operators. ?

Kings' parade, rally celebrates first Stanley Cup

Kings forward Anze Kopitar riled up adoring fans during Thursday's victory celebration.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Dustin Brown stood on a flatbed truck and raised the big silver trophy above his head once again. The air in downtown Los Angeles filled with a blizzard of silver-and-black confetti.

The Los Angeles Kings are Stanley Cup champions for the first time, and a celebration 45 years in the making certainly appeared to be worth the wait.

The Kings rode double-decker buses and flatbed trucks in a parade through the city center, moving slowly up Figueroa Street past thousands of roaring fans. Brown and playoff MVP Jonathan Quick then raised the Cup outside Staples Center, where the Kings completed their 16-4 rampage through the postseason on Monday night by eliminating the New Jersey Devils.

"It was more than you could ever expect," forward Dustin Penner said. "It's one of those moments you want to live over and over again. It's amazing to hear all the support, and to put faces to the cheers we've heard all year."

The Kings gathered inside the arena for a packed rally, with fans waving towels and giving repeated standing ovations to every speaker. Coach Darryl Sutter even pumped up the fans with a series of joyously out-of-character fist pumps, and forward Anze Kopitar riled them up even more.

"It's too much fun not to win it again, so let's go get it," Kopitar said.

Quick, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner, then cracked up the crowd with profane praise of his teammates in a ceremony running live on local television. But even amid the pomp and profanity of a major party, the Kings' affection for each other broke through.

"Just to see the looks on their faces after they won it is something I'll remember for the rest of my life," said Sutter, the midseason replacement who revitalized the Kings' season. "It's just awesome, awesome, awesome."

The Kings will have all summer to absorb what they accomplished this spring, but the superlatives are remarkable.

Los Angeles is the first No. 8 seed to win the Stanley Cup, and only one modern NHL team did it in fewer games. The Kings took a 3-0 lead in all four of their playoff series - also an NHL first. Los Angeles never played an elimination game, only getting stretched even to Game 6 once, and only trailed for about 184 minutes in the entire postseason.

The Kings finished third in the Pacific Division, albeit only two points behind winner Phoenix, and didn't clinch a playoff berth until right before their 81st game. They were the NHL's lowest-scoring team for most of the regular season before getting it together in late February around the time Jeff Carter arrived in a trade with Columbus.

"I don't think we really had the season we expected of ourselves, and I don't think we were an eight seed," said defenseman Rob Scuderi, still sporting black stitches in his nose and upper lip after New Jersey's Steve Bernier slammed him headfirst into the boards in Game 6, resulting in a five-minute power play in which the Kings scored three goals and essentially wrapped up the Cup.

The Stanley Cup has already made an extensive tour of Los Angeles, starting at a Hermosa Beach pub just a few hours after the Kings claimed it. The Cup was in Brown's backyard Tuesday morning, where his two oldest sons drank chocolate milk out of the bowl while wearing their Spider-Man pajamas.

After appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Tuesday, the Cup made its way on Wednesday to Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers and Angels posed with the Kings for a remarkable photo before every hockey player threw out a first pitch. On Wednesday night, the Cup ended up at a popular stage show in Hollywood's historic Roosevelt Hotel, where David Beckham and Chuck Liddell joined in the celebration.

"It feels great," said Kopitar, the playoffs' scoring co-leader with linemate Brown. "You want to have parades every year. It's going to be tough, but we think we have the team to do it."

The Kings are uniformly excited they've got a strong chance of defending their title next season with much the same roster. General manager Dean Lombardi, who lost his voice in the post-Cup celebrations and couldn't speak to the rally crowd, already has signed most of Los Angeles' key contributors for at least one more year, with only forwards Penner, Jarret Stoll and Colin Fraser headed for unrestricted free agency.

"I'd say it's pretty good," Penner said of his chances of returning to Los Angeles. "I want to be back. ... I'm pretty sure Dean is good at math."

Penner rebounded from a dismal regular season for a strong playoff run with linemates Mike Richards and Carter, scoring the overtime goal in the victory that clinched the Kings' second Western Conference championship. The power forward is now a two-time NHL champion after winning the Cup with Anaheim in 2007, and his experience after that title has affected how he views his impending free agency.

Penner signed a five-year, $21.25 million offer sheet with Edmonton in the ensuing offseason, and the furious Ducks didn't match it. Penner got his money, but missed his teammates while struggling through dismal seasons with the Oilers, who traded him to Los Angeles last season.

"I ended up leaving (Anaheim), and you want to be a part of that - coming into a building as the champs," Penner said. "We've got a good thing going here, and I love it."

NASA astronauts train for deep space mission deep below the sea

Because NASA's NEEMO missions put participants in a hostile, alien environment, they're good analogs for expeditions to asteroids, planets, moons or other space destinations, officials said.

The four adventurers entered the Aquarius research station ? which sits 62 feet (19 meters) down in the ocean about 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) off Key Largo ? at 12 p.m. EDT (1600 GMT) Monday, NASA officials said.

The 16th expedition in the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations program, or NEEMO, has now officially begun. Because?NEEMO missions?put participants in a hostile, alien environment, they're good analogs for expeditions to asteroids, planets, moons or other space destinations, officials said.

NEEMO aquanauts can simulate living on a spacecraft and test techniques for?future space missions. NASA can also weigh down the participants to varying degrees, to simulate different gravity environments.

NEEMO 16 will focus on ways to help future astronauts explore near-Earth asteroids, a key priority for NASA. Two years ago, President Barack Obama instructed the space agency to work toward sending humans to a nearby space rock by 2025. [Gallery: Visions of NASA Asteroid Mission]

"We're trying to look out into the future and understand how we'd operate on an?asteroid," NASA astronaut Mike Gernhardt, NEEMO principal investigator, said in a statement. "You don't want to make a bunch of guesses about what you'll need and then get to the asteroid to find out it won't work the way you thought it would. NEEMO helps give us the information we need to make informed decisions now."

NEEMO 16's undersea crew consists of astronaut Dottie M. Metcalf-Lindenburger, Japanese spaceflyer Kimiya Yui, European Space Agency astronaut Timothy Peake and Cornell University professor Steven Squyres, who is also the lead scientist for NASA's Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers.

The crewmembers' activities over the next 12 days will focus on three core areas ? dealing with communication delays, figuring out optimum crew sizes and coming up with ways to attach to asteroids (and stay attached to a space vehicle during excursions).

Metcalf-Lindenburger, Yui, Peake and Squyres will stay underwater for the duration of NEEMO 16, which concludes June 22.

Aquarius is the world's only undersea research station, according to NASA officials. It sits on a sandy patch of seafloor next to coral reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Aquarius is owned by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and managed by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The 81-ton Aquarius measures 43 feet by 20 feet by 16.5 feet (13 by 6 by 5 meters). The research station has six bunks and many of the comforts of home, including a shower, a toilet, hot water, a microwave, a refrigerator, air conditioning and computers with a wireless link to shore.

Hispanic voters targeted in new ad blitz for Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the nation's largest unions and a Democratic super PAC supporting President Barack Obama launched a joint $4 million Spanish-language advertising campaign on Monday, targeting Hispanic voters.

The ads, sponsored by the Service Employees International Union and Priorities USA Action, argue that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's policies would benefit the wealthiest Americans at the expense of Hispanics and other working families.

Priorities USA Action, founded by two former Obama White House aides, has struggled in fundraising compared with Republican-leaning super PACs like American Crossroads and its nonprofit arm, Crossroads GPS. But the super PAC's partnerships with SEIU and other organizations, including the League of Conservation Voters and the United Auto Workers, help the group compete with the better funded GOP-leaning political action committees.

The political wing of SEIU has given a combined $1 million to Priorities USA Action during the current election cycle.

The Priorities USA advertising partnerships with SEIU have focused primary on Hispanic voters, a key election-year constituency for Obama. The ads released Monday use past statements made by Romney, including his assertion that the very poor were not his focus, to try to make the case that the presumptive GOP nominee would be harmful to Hispanics.

The ads will run on television and radio stations in Colorado, Nevada and Florida ? all battleground states with sizeable Hispanic populations ? throughout the summer.

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign on Monday also released a new online video today on what it says is a Romney plan to eliminate police officer, firefighter and teacher positions.

The video asserts that "this approach is nothing new to Mitt Romney -- it's the same one he pursued in Massachusetts."

The video charges that as governor of Massachusetts, Romney cut funding for education and first responders and says that lead to layoffs, even though he expanded the size of state government overall.

The new web video features interviews with Massachusetts elected officials who served during Romney's tenure --and highlights the local impact of the cuts he made at the state level to teachers, firefighters and police.

Undoing health law could have messy ripple effects

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It sounds like a silver lining. Even if the Supreme Court overturns President Barack Obama's health care law, employers can keep offering popular coverage for the young adult children of their workers.

But here's the catch: The parents' taxes would go up.

That's only one of the messy potential ripple effects when the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the Affordable Care Act this month. The law affects most major components of the U.S. health care system in its effort to extend coverage to millions of uninsured people.

Because the legislation is so complicated, an orderly unwinding would prove difficult if it were overturned entirely or in part.

Better Medicare prescription benefits, currently saving hundreds of dollars for older people with high drug costs, would be suspended. Ditto for preventive care with no co-payments, now available to retirees and working families alike.

Partially overturning the law could leave hospitals, insurers and other service providers on the hook for tax increases and spending cuts without the law's promise of more paying customers to offset losses.

If the law is upheld, other kinds of complications could result.

The nation is so divided that states led by Republicans are largely unprepared to carry out critical requirements such as creating insurance markets. Things may not settle down.

"At the end of the day, I don't think any of the major players in the health insurance industry or the provider community really wants to see the whole thing overturned," said Christine Ferguson, a health policy expert who was commissioner of public health in Massachusetts when Mitt Romney was governor.

"Even though this is not the most ideal solution, at least it is moving us forward, and it does infuse some money into the system for coverage," said Ferguson, now at George Washington University. As the GOP presidential candidate, Romney has pledged to wipe Obama's law off the books. But he defends his Massachusetts law that served as a prototype for Obama's.

While it's unclear how the justices will rule, oral arguments did not go well for the Obama administration. The central issue is whether the government can require individuals to have health insurance and fine them if they don't.

That mandate takes effect in 2014, at the same time that the law would prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage to people with existing health problems. Most experts say the coverage guarantee would balloon costs unless virtually all people joined the insurance pool.

Opponents say Congress overstepped its constitutional authority by issuing the insurance mandate. The administration says the requirement is permissible because it serves to regulate interstate commerce. Most people already are insured. The law provides subsidies to help uninsured middle-class households pay premiums and expands Medicaid to pick up more low-income people.

The coverage for young adults up to age 26 on a parent's health insurance is a popular provision that no one's arguing about. A report last week from the Commonwealth Fund estimated that 6.6 million young adults have taken advantage of the benefit, while a new Gallup survey showed the uninsured rate for people age 18-25 continues to decline, down to 23 percent from 28 percent when the law took effect.

Families will be watching to see if their 20-somethings transitioning to the work world will get to keep that newfound security.

Because the benefit is a winner with consumers, experts say many employers and insurers would look for ways to keep offering it even if there's no legal requirement to do so. On Monday, UnitedHealth Group Inc., the nation's largest insurer, is announcing that it will continue to offer coverage to young adults even if the health care law is struck down.

But economist Paul Fronstin of the Employee Benefit Research Institute says many parents would pay higher taxes as a result because they would have to pay for the young adult's coverage with after-tax dollars. Under the health care law, that coverage now comes out of pre-tax dollars.

Fronstin says there's no way to tell exactly how much that tax increase might be, but a couple of hundred dollars a year or more is a reasonable ballpark estimate. Upper-income taxpayers would have a greater liability.

"Adult children aren't necessarily dependents for tax purposes, but an employer can allow anyone to be on a plan, just like they now allow domestic partners," said Fronstin. "If your employer said, 'I'm going to let you keep this,' it would become a taxable benefit for certain people."

Advocates for the elderly are also worried about untoward ripple effects.

If the entire law is overturned, seniors with high prescription costs in Medicare's "donut hole" coverage gap could lose annual discounts averaging about $600. AARP policy director David Certner says he would hope the discounts could remain in place at least through the end of this year.

Yet that might not be possible. Lacking legal authority, Medicare would have to take away the discounts. Drugmakers, now bearing the cost, could decide they want to keep offering discounts voluntarily. But then they'd risk running afoul of other federal rules that bar medical providers from offering financial inducements to Medicare recipients.

"I don't think anyone has any idea," said Certner.

A mixed verdict from the high court would be the most confusing outcome. Some parts of the law would be struck down while others lurch ahead.

That kind of result would seem to call for Congress to step in and smooth any necessary adjustments. Yet partisan divisions on Capitol Hill are so intense that hardly anyone sees a chance that would happen this year.

Kinect to watch your emotions and serve up ads

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

600rexfeatures_1286085a.jpg(Image: Martin Poole/Mood Board/Rex Features )

Online adverts are already tailored to your search and browsing history, but now Microsoft has plans to add emotions to the mix. In a recently revealed patent application the company suggests that using its Kinect sensor to analyse your face and body language for emotions could help companies better target their ads. Emotional analysis of emails, search terms and even your online gaming performance could also influence the ads you see.

Just as advertisers currently bid on certain search terms, the patent suggests a company could choose which emotions would match to its adverts. For example, happy people are unlikely to click weight-loss ads, but they might be in the market for a new gadget. Meanwhile, sad people don't want to hear about club nights and confused people may be looking for a technical support firm to help them out.

Microsoft has previously hinted at using Kinect to bring player's emotions into games, but perhaps rather than new emotional game mechanics, we'll soon see ad-supported games that adjust to your mood? The patent suggests that in addition to watching players with Kinect, games could assign emotional states depending on whether you are winning or losing.

Simple Domestic electrician Solutions For Common Home ...

Simple Domestic electrician Solutions For Common Home Improvements

Home improvement is a fantastic way to spruce up an outdated décor or to give your home a new look. There are so many different options when it comes to home improvement while fitting almost anybody?s budget. Painting, wallpaper or even just new curtains are a few examples that will give any home a fresh look for a minimal price.

To improve the look of the exterior of your home without breaking the bank, give your garage door an update. Frequently, the garage is one of the biggest elements of your home that people can see from afar. You can create a fresh new look for only a few hundred dollars by simply installing a new garage door.

Storage projects are an excellent way to get your feet wet in the home improvement process. If you have a broom closet in your home, consider making it into a small pantry.
