Do black people support Obama because he's black?

Surviving slavery, segregation and discrimination has forged a special pride in African-Americans. Now some are saying this hard-earned pride has become prejudice in the form of blind loyalty to President Barack Obama.

Are black people supporting Obama mainly because he's black? If race is just one factor in blacks' support of Obama, does that make them racist? Can blacks' support for Obama be compared with white voters who may favor his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, because he's white?

These questions have long animated conservatives who are frustrated by claims that white people who oppose Obama's policies are racist. This week, when a black actress who tweeted an endorsement of Romney was subjected to a stream of abuse from other African-Americans, the politics of racial accusation came full circle once again.

Stacey Dash, who also has Mexican heritage, is best known for the 1995 film "Clueless" and the recent cable-TV drama "Single Ladies." On Twitter, she was called "jigaboo," ''traitor," ''house nigger" and worse after posting, "Vote for Romney. The only choice for your future."

The theme of the insults: A black woman would have to be stupid, subservient or both to choose a white Republican over the first black president.

Russell Simmons, the hip-hop mogul and Obama backer, called Dash's experience "racism." Said Barbara Walters on "The View": "If she were white, this wouldn't have happened."

Twitter users are by no means representative of America, and many black Obama supporters quickly denounced the attacks. But for people like Art Gary, an information technology professional, the reason Dash was attacked is simple: She is a black woman supporting a white candidate over a black one.

"It goes both ways," said Gary, who is white. "There is racial bias amongst whites, and there is racial bias amongst blacks. But as far as the press is concerned, it only goes one way."

Antonio Luckett, a sales representative in Milwaukee who is black, called the attacks on Dash unfair. But when people speak out against a symbol of black progress like Obama, he said, "African-Americans tend to be internally hurt by that."

"We still have a civil rights (era) mentality, but we're not living in a civil rights-based world anymore," he said. "We want to say, 'You're black, you need to stand behind black people.'"

Luckett said one reason he voted for Obama in the 2008 primary against Hillary Clinton was because Obama is black: "Yes, I will admit that."

Is that racism? Not in Luckett's mind. "It's voting for someone who would understand your side of the coin a lot better."

Such logic runs into trouble when applied to a white person voting for Romney because he understands whiteness better. Ron Christie, a black conservative who worked for former President George W. Bush, finds both sides of that coin unacceptable.

"It's not the vision that our leaders in the civil rights movement would have envisioned and be proud of in the era of the first African-American president," Christie said.

Martin Luther King Jr. fought Jim Crow laws, which deprived blacks of political rights after Reconstruction, upheld by Southern Democrats. But black voters switched after Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through the 1960s civil rights legislation and Republicans successfully pursued the votes of white people who disliked the civil rights agenda.

Since then, Democrats have persistently wooed black voters with programs and platforms that African-Americans favor, and the party has been rewarded every four years.

Clinton got 83 percent of the black vote in 1992 and 84 percent in 1996; the third-party candidate Ross Perot probably sliced away some of Clinton's black support. Al Gore got 90 percent in 2000; John Kerry got 88 percent in 2004. Obama captured 95 percent in 2008, and 2 million more black people voted than in the previous election.

Christie says he, too, shares the sense of pride in Obama smashing what for blacks is the ultimate glass ceiling. He understands that black pride springs from a shared history of being treated as less than human, while the history of pride in whiteness has a racist context.

But he still sees black people voting for Obama out of a "straitjacket solidarity."

Christie sees it in his barbershop, where black men shifted from calling candidate Obama "half-white" and "not one of us" to demanding that Christie stop opposing the first black president.

He sees it in the comments of radio host Tom Joyner, who told his millions of listeners a year ago, "Let's not even deal with facts right now. Let's deal with our blackness and pride ? and loyalty. . I'm not afraid or ashamed to say that as black people, we should do it because he's a black man."

The actor Samuel L. Jackson said much the same thing: "I voted for Barack because he was black," he told Ebony magazine. "Cuz that's why other folks vote for other people ? because they look like them."

In 2011, as black unemployment continued to rise, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus said that if Clinton was still president, "we probably would be still marching on the White House . (but) nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president."

And just last week, the rapper Snoop Dogg posted a list of voting reasons, written by someone else, on a social media account. No. 1 on his pro-Obama list: He's black. Snoop's top reason to not vote for Romney: He's white.

All of this may help explain why Veronica Scott-Miller, a junior at historically black Hampton University, directed the following tweet at Dash: "You get a lil money and you forget that you're black and a woman. Two things Romney hates."

In an interview, Scott-Miller said the GOP fought Obama's effort to provide funding for historically black colleges like hers. She dislikes Romney's opposition to abortion and thinks Republicans have a "negative stigma about us . they make generalizations in their speeches about our race in general, and they make up terms like welfare queens and stuff."

Told that some saw her tweet as racist, she said that's not what she meant. "I was saying that as a black woman, Romney doesn't have that much that would make us want to vote for him," said Scott-Miller, who is black. "Because Barack Obama lives with three black women in his house, he knows about what they need, he knows about the issues we may be facing, he talks to black women on the regular."

Sherrilyn Ifill, a law professor at the University of Maryland, wrote a column last week exploring why so many black voters are rejecting Romney. She said it has less to do with the candidate than with his party's treatment of Obama, such as John Sununu calling the president "lazy" after the debate, a congressman shouting "You lie!" during the State of the Union address, claims that Obama is not a citizen and more.

In an interview, Ifill said that for black voters, such accusations feel like white people are attacking their own dignity. "In essence," she says, "they are closing ranks around Obama."

She noted that women were justifiably moved by Hillary Rodham Clinton's candidacy and Catholics flocked to the polls to elect President John F. Kennedy. Comparing black pride in Obama to white pride in Romney is a "false symmetry" because of the history of black oppression, she says, and she asked for patience from America at large.

"There should not be this resistance to pride over the first black president," Ifill says. "If we get to the fifth one, I'll be with you."

Relapse or recovery? Neuroimaging predicts course of substance addiction treatment

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? An Indiana University study has provided preliminary evidence that by measuring brain activity through the use of neuroimaging, researchers can predict who is likely to have an easier time getting off drugs and alcohol, and who will need extra help.

"We can also see how brain activity changes as people recover from their addictions," said Joshua Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington, part of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The chronic occurrence of relapse underscores the need for improved methods of treatment and relapse prevention. One potential cause for relapse is deficient self-regulatory control over behavior and decision-making. Specifically this lack of self-regulatory ability in substance dependent individuals has been associated with dysfunction of a mesolimbic-frontal brain network. Reduced activity within this self-regulatory brain network has previously been implicated in relapse, but the specific relationship between this network, self-regulatory ability and recovery is yet to be determined.

The current study explores neurophysiological and cognitive indicators of self-regulatory ability in a community-based sample of substance dependent individuals during the first three months of addiction treatment. The study tests participants' risk-taking inclinations through what is called a Balloon Analog Risk Task, a game in which the participants can decide whether to add increasing amounts of air to a balloon, gaining rewards until it pops. Those who took greater risks were shown to have reduced brain activity. By the same token, those who took less risk showed greater brain activity. By three months those who were successful in treatment also demonstrated a pattern of brain activation that coincided with the risk level of cues during the balloon risk task decision-making. In individuals who relapsed, risk-related activation was limited to certain brain regions, possibly signaling the anticipated reward rather than the risk of negative outcome.

Egypt's liberals and Islamists clash, over 100 injured

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents and supporters of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi clashed in Cairo on Friday in the first street violence between rival factions since the Islamist leader took office.

Islamists and their opponents threw stones, bottles and petrol bombs, and some fought hand-to-hand, showing how feelings still run high between the rival groups trying to shape the new Egypt after decades of autocracy, even though the streets have generally been calmer since Mursi's election in June.

The Health Ministry said 110 people had sustained light to moderate injuries, state media reported.

A government is in place, but Islamists and liberals are at loggerheads over the drafting of the new constitution, which must be agreed before a new parliament can be elected.

Many of the thousands who gathered in Tahrir Square were angry at this week's court ruling that acquitted former officials charged with ordering a camel and horseback charge on protesters in the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak last year.

But even before that ruling, Mursi's opponents had called for protests against what they say is his failure to deliver on his promises for his first 100 days in office.

"Down, down with rule by the guide!" Mursi's opponents chanted, suggesting that Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie pulls the strings even though Mursi officially quit the Brotherhood on taking office.

"Mursi! Mursi!" the president's backers responded.

BUSES SET ON FIRE

Some demonstrators pulled down a temporary podium that had been erected on one side of the square for speeches. Later, Islamists took over the square, triggering scuffles in nearby streets as they tried to keep rival groups out.

Two buses parked near the square were set alight. Witnesses said they had been used by the Brotherhood to bring in supporters.

"We went to protest against the constituent assembly and Mursi's failure in his 100 days, and Islamists prevented us and are now controlling the square," said Islam Wagdy, 19, a member of a group set up by leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahy.

A member of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party dismissed that account. "What happened today was an attempt by the liberal powers ... to prevent Islamists expressing their views and protesting in Tahrir, which belongs to all Egyptians and not to a certain current," said the FJP's Ahmed Sobeih.

There was no intervention by police, who have often been the target of protesters' anger in the past because of their brutality against demonstrators in last year's revolt.

The Brotherhood, which joined Friday's protest, had put the focus for the demonstration on this week's court ruling.

The charge by men on camels and horseback was one of the most violent incidents of the uprising that ousted Mubarak in February 2011. The case has been closely watched by those seeking justice for the hundreds killed in the revolt.

The court acquitted top Mubarak-era officials such as former lower house speaker Fathi Sorour and Mubarak aide Safwat Sherif, both of whom are detested by many Egyptians.

ALEXANDRIA

Demonstrators also gathered in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, where Mursi went to a mosque to perform Friday prayers before giving a speech there.

"We won't let anyone involved in corruption get away," he said, while urging protesters not to disrupt people's work. As he spoke, some chanted: "The people want the judiciary purged."

Many blame the general prosecutor, perceived as a Mubarak loyalist, for not securing convictions.

In an apparent bid to appease the public, the president said late on Thursday he was moving Abdel Maguid Mahmoud out of that position to make him ambassador to the Vatican, because Egyptian law prevented him being dismissed.

Mahmoud denounced the move and told Egyptian media he would stay on. The influential judges' club condemned the decision as interference and called for a meeting of judicial officials on Sunday to discuss action, the state news agency reported.

Even some political groups who wanted Mahmoud out questioned the way Mursi had done it. The liberal Free Egyptians Party said changing the prosecutor should be an independent judicial move.

Mursi has won grudging respect from some opponents for pushing the army out of politics, after decades of rule by military men, and for raising Egypt's profile abroad.

But many Egyptians, with high expectations after the revolt, say he has not done enough at home, failing to deliver on promises for his first 100 days such as cleaning up cities and getting traffic moving in Egypt's congested streets.

Many more secular-minded Egyptians and minority Christians also worry that Mursi and his Islamist supporters will seek to impose religious restrictions on society.

How much is Romney backed in Britain?

Most of the British public and political class ? including many Tories ? prefer President Obama to his Republican challenger, but Mitt Romney is not without fans among the British government.

By Ben Quinn,?Correspondent / October 11, 2012

In this photo from July 26, 2012, Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney meets with British Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street in London. Despite a much criticized trip to London this summer, Mr. Romney has supporters among the British public and political class.

A visiting Mitt Romney stirred up a storm here last summer when he expressed concerns over Britain's readiness to host the Olympics ? prompting a backlash that included a rebuke from Prime Minister David Cameron. So one would be excused for thinking that the Republican presidential candidate is without cheerleaders in the UK.

But they do exist.

They?re fairly small in number in comparison with those getting behind President Obama, whose reelection is favored by more than 70 percent of Britons and whose admirers include not just the left but many in the Conservative Party itself.?

The Romney camp in the UK include the expat Republicans who will be cheering just as loudly as those at home when they gather next Wednesday to watch the second presidential debate at the offices of a law firm in London?s upmarket Saville Row.?Others include Mr. Romney?s recently uncovered "long lost" cousins in England?s northwest, where his ancestors lived for generations and converted to Mormonism before leaving for the United States in 1841.

But despite Mr. Cameron?s closeness to President Obama, passionate support remains for Romney among potentially influential sections of the British right, who are currently pressing for a deeper, sharper approach to British deficit reduction. To them, a Romney win would be a vindication of Conservative economic policy, as opposed to the Obama interventionism so often held up as a shining example by British advocates of a Keynesian approach to restoring growth.

Daniel Hannan, a Conservative member of the European Parliament and an articulate standard-bearer on his own party?s right wing, says he was rooting for Obama last time ? but that two things have changed.

?For one, the US debt level is not just a domestic problem. It?s a global problem when the leading economy in the free world is $16 trillion in debt and is adding to that yearly... [it] threatens a shift in power globally. Now, I don?t know if Mitt Romney is going to get on top of the deficit but I know, as everyone else does, that Obama isn?t.?

?The other is that from a purely an Anglosphere point of view, Romney is much better disposed to the other English-speaking democracies than Obama,? adds Mr. Hannan, who argues that British support for Obama has not been reciprocated until recently.

He lists evidence such as the symbolism of Obama receiving from the last prime minister, Gordon Brown, an ornamental pen-holder made with the timbers of a Victorian anti-slave ship and responding with a box set of DVDs ?including Die Hard 3, but not Die Hard 1 or 2.??

Editorial: Public speaking - The Daily Princetonian

Continuously faced with in-class presentations, on-campus recruiting and job interviews, Princeton University students constantly need to exercise their public speaking skills. Many of us feel uncomfortable speaking or presenting in front of large audiences while others wish to further improve and refine their skills. Though Princeton does offer a class on rhetoric through the Classics department, the class does not delve into techniques of public speaking but rather a focus on persuasive writing techniques. Unfortunately, only one course at the University concentrates exclusively on public speaking, and it is only offered once every several years.

ENG 230: Public Speaking is an LA in the English department that was last offered in Fall 2010. According to the course description, ENG 230 ?aims to develop effective public speaking skills, along with a complex understanding of what it means to speak ... to improve confidence and expression in oral presentation.? While it received generally positive reviews, ENG 230 has gone four semesters without being offered. Additionally, even in years when Public Speaking is offered, the number of spots in the class are limited, causing classes to quickly become oversubscribed due to high demand. Coupled with its infrequent offering, this demand prevents many students from ever being able to take the course.

The Editorial Board believes public speaking courses should be offered more frequently and with an increased number of class sections. In today?s competitive academic and professional environments, effective public speaking has become somewhat of a necessity for students to gain an edge. Along with clear and compelling writing, speech has become a distinguishing factor among students in classrooms as well as job interviews and professional settings. Students should be able to take courses in public speaking to develop confidence and thus improve performance in other courses and in the precept system in particular.

One could argue students have ample opportunity to develop public speaking skills in precept discussions, where students have the chance to speak to an audience of classmates. However, precept discussions are informal and focus on the class?s subject matter rather than the art of speech itself. A public speaking course is specifically geared toward teaching the art of communication. It would help improve students? confidence and performance in speeches and likely encourage otherwise quiet students to participate in their other classes more often.

We also support public speaking groups on campus, such as the recently created Speak with Style. The group?s mission is to help students perfect their public speaking, presentation and interview skills. SWS also invites guest speakers, such as its faculty advisor John Weeren, speechwriter for University President Shirley Tilghman. We hope more students will work with groups such as SWS and improve the quality of in- and out-of-class presentations. We also hope, with a larger, frequently offered Public Speaking course, Princeton will take steps in the right direction to help students improve their communication from the classroom to the boardroom.

Rome Film Festival chief hints at Tarantino "surprise"

ROME (Reuters) - Quentin Tarantino may present his new western "Django Unchained" at the Rome Film Festival in November, the event's artistic director hinted on Wednesday.

The film has not been listed in the official programme but Marco Mueller, who previously headed the Venice Film Festival, said "two surprise films" would be shown at the event. He dropped a heavy suggestion that Django, starring Jamie Foxx and Leonardo Di Caprio, would be among them.

"You will see Tarantino soon, here. You will see him here soon for a big surprise," Mueller said.

"This is something we will announce in detail in a few days' time, and you will see that Django will be stepping on the stage of the Auditorium."

The film is the latest work from the Pulp Fiction director since he released "Inglourious Basterds" in 2009, a historical fantasy about a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers who assassinate Nazi leaders in occupied France in World War Two.

Django Unchained continues the theme of vengeance wreaked against historical villains, telling the story of a former slave in America's Deep South who attempts to free his wife from a ruthless plantation owner.

Film buff Tarantino's latest work is something of an homage to the Italian "spaghetti western" cinema of the 1960s and 70s: Italian-language Wild West movies filmed in Europe such as Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly".

Its name refers to Django, a 1966 spaghetti western starring Franco Nero, who will appear in a cameo role in the Tarantino film.

NOT VENICE

Confirmed in the line-up is the latest instalment of the Twilight series, "Breaking Dawn Part 2" which will premiere at the festival, although its two stars Robert Pattinson and Kirsten Stewart are not expected on the red carpet.

Walter Hill's "Bullet to the Head", an action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone about a policeman and a hitman who unite against a common enemy, is also to be screened at the festival, which will run from November 9 through 17.

Roman Coppola's "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" starring Charlie Sheen, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman is competing for the event's top prize, while DreamWorks 3D adventure "Rise of the Guardians" is showing out of competition.

Film bloggers have speculated that the other surprise could be "Only God Forgives", starring Ryan Gosling in a tale about a Thai boxing match between a policeman and a gangster. The movie is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Danish filmmaker behind 2011's hit "Drive".

Mueller was expected to raise the profile of the Rome festival when he was appointed earlier in 2012, and has been under pressure to produce the kind of star-studded programme that is designed to heat up its rivalry with Venice.

Mueller said he felt there was room for both festivals and he felt Rome had something alternative to offer.

"My take on Venice is that Venice will always continue to exist as a major platform to create the visibility and the right profile for a film," Mueller told Reuters.

"In Rome we have the possibility of doing something very different."
