Wearing his signature hoodie and jeans, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the bell to open the Nasdaq Stock Market from the company's Menlo Park, California, headquarters this morning as his company went public with the biggest ever initial public offering by a tech company. Going for $38 per share, the offering raised $16 billion for the social networking website, which is inarguably one of, if not the most important and impactful tech company for the millennial generation.

Zuckerberg has always been a natural at balancing the demands of running the world's biggest social network, which boasts more than 900 million users around the world, while himself being an example of his generation's focus on being open and forward-thinking without the pretense and show of past business leaders.

The self-made billionaire is the ultimate everyman, albeit one with a genius intellect, and it's a side of himself he showed off in earnest last year when MTV visited Facebook HQ for its special, "The Diary of Facebook."

"Facebook is a very open company. If you think about what we do, we're trying to give all these people who use our products the ability to share things with their friends and their family," Zuckerberg told MTV News. "The mission is to make the world more open and connected. So we believe that if that's what we're trying to do in the world then that's how we should run the company too."

Zuckerberg went on to describe the philosophy with which he runs Facebook, now one of the most financially valuable in the world, and it stands in diametric opposition to how we view the modern corporate executive. There are no sequestered corner offices at Facebook HQ, no CEOs sporting expensive designer suits.

"We have this really open floor plan. People are all sitting out near each other. It's easy for everyone to turn to their neighbor and start talking," the Facebook boss continued. "I have a desk out there just like everyone else. ... That kind of collaborative and connected culture is what produces the best products for the people who are going to use them."

His philosophy on how to run a modern company may ultimately change the face of business moving forward. Friday's massive IPO did many things, but one of the biggest, coming in the midst of an ongoing financial crisis created by men in suits, was to prove that the future doesn't smoke cigars in executive lounges, it wears a hoodie and sits with the engineers who make it all happen.

How is leading a business in the U.S. different from leading a company based in Ireland?

In some ways this is hard to answer, as I have never led a company in Ireland. My leadership experience has all been in the U.S., however, I would say that while there are some obvious cultural differences, I don?t think they are so great as to change the fundamentals of good leadership ? which I believe are pretty much global. In Ireland, given its size, relationships probably play a slightly greater role because the personal relationship has always been an integral part of how Irish people do business, whereas in the US, given the fact that many of those you lead or do business with are spread across the country (even the globe) ? and you rarely see them face-to-face ? the relationship element plays less of a role. In other words, I feel in the U.S. you can operate in a very pragmatic manner and be all about business ? whereas in Ireland you may need to temper this a little with the relationship element.

What is the biggest pro of adopting sales software in an organization? Biggest con?

The biggest pro to adopting sales software is that you can provide sales people with real time tools to do their jobs better while allowing sales management to have greater visibility into opportunities and pipeline, which in turn allows them the opportunity to coach more proactively and in a more targeted fashion. It is through this lens that you need to evaluate software before deciding to deploy it with your sales organization. For example, ask yourself ?Does it help organize the sales person?s approach to an opportunity; does it reinforce the right behaviors, tactics and approach and does it provide managers with insights to coach to??

On the con side is the ?shiny new toy? syndrome, where management may come across a great piece of software that will provide lots of data for management, but has no real benefit for the sales person ? and thus the deployment just sucks up time, resources and money and because it doesn?t benefit the sales person. The data returned is junk.

What advice would you offer to executives looking to find the best software package and implement it successfully within their organization, in a timely manner?

In terms of choosing software, I would refer back to the questions I mentioned above ? ask yourself ?Does it help organize the sales person?s approach to an opportunity, does it reinforce the right behaviors, tactics and approach and does it provide managers with insights to coach to?? Using these simple questions as a first step in your evaluation process will save you a lot of time and qualify out applications that are not going to be successful.

Secondly is to take an iterative approach to implementation. Don?t try to roll out all the features of a software application at one time. Pick one or two that have the biggest benefits and are the easiest to learn and adopt. Then spend a period of months getting people to use and see the value of them and only then add some others. If you take an iterative approach, especially if sales is your audience, you save a lot of time and angst and ultimately have a more successful implementation.

You have a diverse background including business development, marketing as well as quality and cost control. Which area are you most passionate about and why?

Running a business is what I am most passionate about because it forces me to draw on all my experiences and it requires a level of dexterity in that you need to be able to switch between the high-level strategic and the down-in-weeds tactical almost at will. At the end of the day, a successful business that is generating good profit margins is a measure of how well all the constituent parts are working together, and how customers value what you do ? and this is what gives me the greatest satisfaction.

Having worked for a startup (Learning Sciences International, ) in the past, how did that experience prepare you for your current role as CEO for Huthwaite?

It helped me in so many ways because I am not sure you can ever match the experience of sitting at a cheap plastic table in a tiny office with just a laptop and trying to figure out how to deliver on the bold vision of the founders of the company. It was the first time I had to involve myself in every aspect of a business, so it provided a great foundation for working at Huthwaite. It also taught me that sometimes you have to try a number of different strategies and be prepared to quickly switch when one is not working. I also learned how much a small bunch of smart, motivated people can achieve and this has helped me in subsequent roles. Never fall into the trap of over-investing in resources when proper focus and nimbleness are all that is needed. Learning

Laurie Fine, the wife of a former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach accused of molesting ball boys, plans to sue ESPN and two of the network's reporters for libel in a federal court, her lawyers said Wednesday.

A draft of the lawsuit says sports journalists Mark Schwarz and Arthur Berko "spitefully destroyed Laurie Fine's reputation in an attempt to capitalize financially in the tragic wake of the Penn State sex abuse scandal."

It says Fine's reputation was ruined by the malicious publication of false and defamatory accusations.

In response, ESPN backed its stories. "We haven't had an opportunity to review the complaint. We stand by our reporting," the sports programming network said.

Fine is expected to break her months-long silence Wednesday to talk about the accusations against her, her lawyers said.

"ESPN published worldwide defamatory statements about Laurie Fine," said one of her attorneys, Lawrence Fisher. "They have essentially ruined her life, destroyed her reputation in the Syracuse community that she loved and served for so many years."

Among the false accusations Fine alleges in the lawsuit are:

US veterans to return war medals in protest

Iraq war veteran Steven Acheson will engage in the rarest of protests this weekend: He will hand back his military service medals at the NATO summit in Chicago, an?act one veteran calls "disgraceful."

Acheson, who served for five years in the Army, including more than a year in Iraq that he says?left him with PTSD and nightmares, is taking this step to protest the "war on terror"?and the force leading it, NATO. He will be joined by a few dozen veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are concerned about the wars' fallout on veterans and civilians alike.

?I feel like this is a really good way for me to kind of, not clear my conscience, but just make a step in the direction of healing and kind of reconciling with the Afghan people and the Iraq people,? said Acheson, a 27-year-old college student from Wisconsin and a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, which includes soldiers who served in any of the post- 9/11 conflict zones. ?? and let them know that we?re standing by their side and we?re not standing with NATO anymore. We don?t agree with the policies that are driving these wars.?

Acheson and 30-50 fellow 9/11-era veterans will carry their medals as they lead an anti-war march this Sunday through Chicago?s downtown area to the convention center where NATO is holding its summit. President Obama and other world leaders are scheduled to be among the summit attendees, and the city of Chicago is bracing for major protests.

Organizers are hoping the rally, which caps a week-long series of anti-NATO actions, will draw thousands. The Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will be flanked by Vietnam veterans and will hold a reconciliation ceremony with Afghans for Peace.

They intend to carry an American flag that they will lower and replace with a white one as they approach the summit venue. They are planning to pin their medals to the American flag, which they?d like to present to NATO officials. If they?re unable to do so, they may construct an ad hoc memorial or toss the medals toward the convention center -- like some 900 Vietnam veterans did in 1971 on Capitol Hill in an anti-war protest dubbed ?Operation Dewey Canyon III.?

Barry Romo was West Coast coordinator for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War during the 1971 week-long demonstration.

?Wives left husbands; parents said ? those medals were something you should be giving the grandkids. But I mean, the level of death was just really too much for us to deal with at that time and we said, you know, if there?s a question of medals versus lives then there was no question,? he said.

Returning the medals ? even those that are given just for showing up to the theater of conflict, as are some of the ones the veterans plan to return ? is not without controversy.

?They?re as much of a disgrace as the veterans back in the Vietnam days that did the same thing,? said retired Army 1st Sgt. Troy Steward, of New York, who served 22 years and is now a military blogger. ?If these veterans aren?t proud of the service that they did ? then they should never have accepted them (medals) in the first place.?

Steward, 43, who served in Afghanistan, said the action was ?disgraceful and disrespectful? to others who had served. While the veterans were welcome to express their opinions, he said, there were a lot of ?better ways to do it than essentially shaming your military service and your brethren.?

Acheson will return his ?Global War on Terrorism Service Medal? and the ?Iraq Campaign Medal?; he is keeping others he received.

Aaron Hughes, a 30-year-old organizer for IVAW who served six years in the Army, including 15 months in Iraq and Kuwait, also will return two medals.

In the process of searching for a way to heal ?we came to these symbols of the occupations, which are these medals that we carry around and we still have,? Hughes said. ?They?re these ? reminders of what we?ve done, that it?s time to let go of.?

?I think it?s something that many of us are conflicted about, but we also feel like this is the right action to take,? he noted, adding that there was a lot of consensus on the returning of the medals. ?It is a sacrifice, but it?s one that we feel is worth it.?

But some?cautioned the veterans to think carefully before handing over the medals.

?They become almost like family heirlooms in some ways,? said Adrian Lewis, a professor specializing in 20th century warfare at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. ?It's not the norm to give them back. Most folks are proud of them. They feel like they earned them and they?re indications that they served their country.?

?They may regret it at some point ... and their family may ultimately regret it, too,? he added.

Unlike the Vietnam War, Americans today don?t have the same outrage over the current conflicts, Lewis said.

?Most Americans are not paying attention to the war ... they have no stake in it, no commitment to it,? he added, noting that he therefore didn?t expect the veterans? medal protest to ?be a big deal. It's not a game-changer.?

It?s not clear how many other veterans have taken similar action. The Department of Defense, the Air Force and Army said they did not keep records on how many medals have been given back.

"We're very proud of the service rendered by our soldiers and veterans, and they are free to do with their awards and decorations as they please," George Wright, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, said in an e-mail.

Acheson said the veterans don?t have high expectations for how NATO officials will receive their protest. He also noted that he was keeping some of his medals because he was proud of his service, even though he was upset that he ended up fighting in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.

?I?m tired of seeing ? fellow vets being redeployed with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, and I?m tired of seeing soldiers being deployed in general to an illegal war,? he said. ?I just feel like we?ve spent enough money and enough lives over there ? it?s time to come home.?
