Think Progress:

Popular conservative columnist and National Review writer John Derbyshire topped all of his previous racist screeds (and sexist rants) today by posting a long breakdown of all of the important lessons he has taught his children about race ? and he?s outdone his own racism with this one.

Do you think you, your husband is an ikumen? graph of japanese statisticsIt?s a while since I?ve had an iShare survey, so I?m not just pleased to see an update, but also to see a rather interesting topic being surveyed, that of child-rearing and doting fathers, with both the husbands rating themselves and wives rating their husbands.

Demographics

Over the 15th and 16th of March 2012 726 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.3% of the sample were female, 33.7% in their twenties, 33.2% in their thirties, and 33.1% in their forties, furthermore, all were married with a pre-school child. The survey was conducted in conjunction with Benesse?s Women?s Mall.

If you want to find out how doting a parent you are, Benesse?s Women?s Mall offer a self-test.

In the survey below, I use the Japanese term ????, ikumen, which describes men who proactively take part in child-rearing, and who grow up themselves while enjoying child-rearing.

The quiet French, Chartreux cat | A blog for Pets

Chartreux cats tend to be quiet, rarely making noises such as mewing or crying, and some are mute. They are quite observant and intelligent, with some Chartreux learning to operate radio on/off buttons and to open screen door latches. They take about two years to reach adulthood. Chartreux cats are playful cats...
well into their adult years; some can be taught to fetch small objects in the same manner as a dog. Chartreux are good with children and other animals.
?They are non-aggressive, affectionate, good travelers and generally very healthy. Chartreux tend to bond with one person in their household, preferring to be in their general vicinity (often following their favoured person from room to room), though they are still loving and affectionate to the other members of the household.

The Chartreux is a breed of domestic cat from France and is recognised by a number of registries around the world. It is not recognised by the GCCF in the UK, ostensibly for being too similar to the British Shorthair, one of whose colours is a similar blue-grey.

The Chartreux is large and muscular, with relatively short, fine-boned limbs, and very fast reflexes. They are known for their blue (grey) water-resistant short hair double coats which are often slightly nappy in texture (often showing "breaks" like a sheepskin) and orange- or copper-colored eyes.

Chartreux cats are also known for their "smile": due to the structure of their heads and their tapered muzzles, they often appear to be smiling. Chartreux are exceptional hunters and are highly prized by farmers.
The first letter of the official name of a Chartreux cat encodes the year of its birth; all Chartreux born in the same year have official names beginning with the same letter.

?The code letters rotate through the alphabet each year, omitting the letters K, Q, W, X, Y, and Z. For example, a Chartreux born in 2011 would have an official name starting with the letter G (Fogle 2001:128).

There is a legend that the Chartreux are descended from cats brought to France by Carthusian monks to live in the order's head monastery, the Grande Chartreuse, located in the Chartreuse Mountains north of the city of Grenoble (Siegal 1997:27). But in 1972, the Prior of the Grande Chartreuse denied that the monastery's archives held any records of the monks' use of any breed of cat resembling the Chartreux (Simonnet 1990:36?37).

?Legend also has it that the Chartreux's ancestors were feral mountain cats from what is now Syria, brought back to France by returning Crusaders in the 13th century, many of whom entered the Carthusian monastic order.

The first documented mention of the breed was by the French naturalist Buffon in the 18th century. The breed was greatly diminished during the first World War and wild populations (Helgren 1997:100-103) were not seen after World War II.

A concerted effort by European breeders kept the breed from extinction. The first Chartreux were brought to the U.S. in 1971 by Helen and John Gamon of La Jolla, California. In 1987, the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) advanced the Chartreux breed to championship status (Siegal 1997:27). There are fewer than two dozen active Chartreux breeders in North America as of 2007.

Historically famous Chartreux owners include the French novelist Colette, Charles Baudelaire and French president Charles de Gaulle.

When to use a content management system

In a nutshell, content management systems are server hosted web services which enable the authoring and storage of web content. They are often used to create complex websites for displaying large volumes of information (like job boards for example) and to provide user interactivity. CMS?s come in all shapes, sizes and price ranges including expensive enterprise options like Sharepoint, free solutions like Wiki?s and solutions from third parties. However, regardless of their price tag, all of these systems offer the same benefits, and suffer from the same downfalls.

Before deciding if a CMS is right for your project, lets start with the pros and cons:

    Pros:
No editor to install: since everything is ?web enabled?, this usually includes the editing interface, making CMS editing available across platforms. However as we?ll see below, web editing is a double edged sword.

Concurrent editing: multiple authors can work on the same documents/pages at the same time. In fact most CMS?s have built in version control and conflict management.

A website in a box: the CMS will give you a default website out of the box, often with features like security authentication. Customizations can usually be made in the back end (often by programmers or sys admins) as well as at the content editing level (ie: through CSS and html).

    Cons:
Primitive web editing: we?ve found that all CMS?s regardless of their price tag provide terrible editing capabilities. This includes clunky and undersized text editing boxes, slow page refreshes, and browser windows that jump around the page.

Browser buttons: the loss of work through the inevitable click of the browser?s back button is very real, especially when it?s unclear if the web page is reloading.

Reliance on the network/internet: if the network or internet goes down, you can no longer work on the CMS. This is particularly bad when you are half way through an edit, and then discover a network loss when you try to save your work. Usually the work will be totally lost, so it?s recommended that authors save more frequently than in a native application. Sporadic performance of the network or CMS backend, will also lead to unpredictable usability of the authoring tools.

Single sourcing: many CMS?s don?t support the concept of single sourcing (allowing chunks of content to be edited in one spot and reused elsewhere). This forces the content authors to write the same content in multiple locations, which makes future editing very difficult and error prone.

So when should you use a CMS? Generally speaking you should choose one when creating a full blown website, especially when user interactivity is required. This will provide an end-to-end solution for storing content and rendering it to the user in some desirable way. CMS?s are also handy when there are multiple authors and it?s impractical to give them each an expenseive authoring tool.

For projects like technical documentation which don?t require user interactivity, you should instead choose a single sourcing tool which can generate web content. You can then integrate or link to that content from your CMS. This will give your authors the best performing editing tools and ensure that repetitive content need only be written once. If providing a tool to each author is impractical, consider having a gatekeeper insert the content. This will help to ensure quality content.

The long arm of the dendritic cell: A link between atherosclerosis and autoimmunity

ScienceDaily (Apr. 4, 2012) ? Individuals who suffer from autoimmune diseases also display a tendency to develop atherosclerosis -- the condition popularly known as hardening of the arteries. Clinical researchers at LMU, in collaboration with colleagues in W?rzburg, have now discovered a mechanism which helps to explain the connection between the two types of disorder. The link is provided by a specific class of immune cells called plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs). pDCs respond to DNA released from damaged and dying cells by secreting interferon proteins which stimulate the immune reactions that underlie autoimmune diseases.

The new study shows that stimulation of pDCs by a specific DNA-protein complex contributes to the progression of atherosclerosis. The findings may have implications for new strategies for the treatment of a whole spectrum of conditions that are associated with chronic inflammatory reactions.

Atherosclerosis is a major cause of death in Western societies. The illness is due to the formation of insoluble deposits called atherosclerotic plaques on the walls of major arteries as a consequence of chronic, localized inflammation reactions. By reducing blood flow, the plaques can provoke heart attacks and strokes. A class of immune cells called dendritic cells plays a crucial role in facilitating the development of these plaques. The term refers to a heterogeneous cell population that makes up part of the immune system. Among the cell types represented in this population are the so-called plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC), but their potential significance for atherosclerosis had not been explored until now. A group of researchers led by Dr. Yvonne D?ring in Professor Christian Weber's department at LMU, together with a team supervised by Privatdozentin Dr. Alma Zernecke of W?rzburg University, has now shown how pDCs promote the development of atherosclerosis -- and explained why patients with autoimmune disorders, such as psoriasis or systemic lupus erythematodes (SLE), show a predisposition to atherosclerosis.

Using laboratory mice as an experimental model, the researchers were able to show that pDCs contribute to early steps in the formation of athersclerotic lesions in the blood vessels. Stimulation of pDCs causes them to secrete large amounts of interferons, proteins that strongly stimulate inflammatory processes. The protein that induces the release of interferons is produced by immune cells that accumulate specifically at sites of inflammation, and mice that are unable to produce this protein also have fewer plaques. Stimulation of pDCs in turn leads to an increase in the numbers of macrophages present in plaques. Macrophages normally act as a clean-up crew, removing cell debris and fatty deposits by ingesting and degrading them. However, they can also "overindulge," taking up more fat than they can digest. When this happens, they turn into so-called foam cells that promote rather than combat atherosclerosis. In addition, activated, mature pDCs can initiate an immune response against certain molecules found in atherosclerotic lesions, which further exacerbates the whole process.

The stimulation of pDCs provides the link between atherosclerosis and autoimmune diseases. "The pDCs themselves are stimulated by the self-antigens that set off the autoimmune reactions which result in conditions like psoriasis and SLE," says D?ring. Indeed, it is well known that the secretion of interferons by activated pDCs contributes to the genesis of a number of autoimmune diseases

"The newly discovered involvement of pDCs in the development of atherosclerosis establishes a direct link between this disorder and autoimmune reactions, and reveals why the stimulation of pDC that is characteristic of autoimmune diseases contributes to the progression of atherosclerosis," says Weber. "The findings also suggest new approaches to the treatment of chronic inflammation that could be useful for a whole range of diseases."
