More Xperia NX and Xperia Acro HD details -- coming to Japan in February and March

Android Central

The first detailed information on the Japan-only Xperia Acro HD and Xperia NX has emerged along with promotional images, following Sony Ericsson's announcement of the devices on Monday. If you've been following Sony's CES presence over the past few days, then both phones may look strangely familiar -- the Acro HD is a 4.3-inch version of AT&T's Xperia Ion, while the Xperia NX appears to be more or less identical to Sony's international flagship phone, the Xperia S. Interestingly, the Acro HD's spec list also notes that it's a "waterproof" device, a feature that's not often seen on mainstream smartphones. Besides that, both phones feature a now-familiar spec list -- a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU, 1GB of RAM and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, running on Sony's 720p HD "Reality Display".

The Sony Ericsson branding also seems to be alive and well in Japan, at least for the moment. Whereas the Xperia Ion and Xperia S are both Sony-branded devices elsewhere, the Acro HD and Xperia NX still feature the familiar SE logo. Both phones will arrive in Japan on NTT DoCoMo -- first the Xperia NX in February, followed by the Xperia Acro HD in March.

A snake named Matilda: New species in Tanzania (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? The world's newest snake has menacing-looking yellow and black scales, dull green eyes and two spiky horns. And it's named after a 7-year-old girl.

Matilda's Horned Viper was discovered in a small patch of southwest Tanzania about two years ago and was introduced last month as the world's newest known snake species in an issue of Zootaxa.

Tim Davenport, the director of the Wildlife Conservation Society in Tanzania, was on the three-person team that discovered the viper. Thanks to his daughter, the snake will always carry a family namesake.

"My daughter, who was 5 at the time, became fascinated by it and used to love spending time watching it and helping us look after it," Davenport told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "We called it Matilda's Viper at that stage ... and then the name stuck."

Only three new vipers have been discovered across Africa the last three decades, making the find rare and important. The Wildlife Conservation Society is not revealing exactly where the snake lives so that trophy hunters can't hunt it.

Davenport said he is not sure how many live in the wild because snake counts are hard to do. Twelve live in captivity and a breeding plan is being carried out.

Davenport, a Briton who has lived in Tanzania for 12 years, said that while many people fear snakes, most are harmless and help keep rodent numbers down. Matilda's horned viper can grow to 2 feet (65 centimeters) or bigger, he said.

"This particular animal looks fierce and probably is venomous (though bush viper bites are not fatal)," Davenport told AP via an Internet chat. "However, it is actually very calm animal and not at all aggressive. I have handled one on a number of occasions."

The Wildlife Conservation Society runs the Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo in New York, and Davenport said it would be a "great option" to showcase the new horned viper at one of those locations, but that nothing has yet been decided.

SNB chief quits after currency trade scandal (Reuters)

BERNE (Reuters) ? Swiss National Bank Chairman Philipp Hildebrand is resigning with immediate effect after a scandal over a controversial currency trade made by his wife, the SNB said on Monday.

The SNB said in a brief statement that Hildebrand would speak about his decision at 1415 GMT at a media briefing in Berne and make available a number of unspecified documents.

Hildebrand's wife Kashya, a former hedge fund trader who now runs a Zurich art gallery, bought 400,000 Swiss francs ($418,000) worth of dollars on August 15, three weeks before her husband oversaw steps to cap the rise of the franc.

Hildebrand last week rejected calls to step down, saying he only learned of his wife's trade the following day, rejecting claims by the Swiss magazine Weltwoche that he had personally authorized the currency deal, which made a big profit.

($1 = 0.9564 Swiss francs)

In China, cat soup to die for?

In China police say a business tycoon died when he ate a dish of prized cat soup. The soup was poisoned.?

Serves him right, you might think, for tucking into Mittens.

Police in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong say that local business tycoon Long Liyuan died when he ate a dish of deliberately poisoned cat soup.

Diners in Guangdong, known in English as Canton, are well known for their exotic culinary tastes. They boast that they will eat ?everything on the table except the legs.?

That habit can have tragic consequences ? and not just for the snakes, rats, monkeys, and scaly anteaters that get tossed into Cantonese pots. The SARS outbreak in 2003 that killed 321 people in mainland China is thought to have started when someone in Guangdong ate a civet cat carrying the disease.

But it wasn?t the cat that killed Mr. Long, according to police. It was the extract of?Gelsemium elegans,?a poisonous creeper known as ?heartbreak grass,? that local official Huang Guang put in the cat hotpot.

Mr. Huang owed Long money and could not pay it back, according to the Legal Daily newspaper, so he invited his creditor to lunch with another man, and poisoned the food. The third man found his cat soup ?more bitter? than usual and ate only a little, according to media reports. Huang himself ? presumably so as not to arouse suspicion ? ate a healthy portion and almost went blind, while Long went into cardiac arrest and died.

Huang confessed to the murder after a lengthy interrogation, according to the Legal Daily.

Cat meat is prized in Guangdong not so much for its taste as for its symbolism. Cats are a stand-in for tigers, in the same way that chickens represent the phoenix and snakes do duty at the table for dragons.

Tigers, phoenix birds, and dragons are powerful animals in Chinese iconography, though what they taste like, I have no idea.?

HBT: Chicago police plan to talk to Castro

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro will be in Chicago this weekend for the first time since the end of the 2011 season. It will also be his first time back in the city since he allegedly committed sexual assault against a woman at his downtown apartment.

So, in between appearances at the Cubs? annual fan convention, he?s going to have a chat with police.

No charges have been filed by Castro?s accuser and the 21-year-old shortstop?s representatives have denied the allegations.?The Cubs, meanwhile, seem to be taking a wait-and-see approach. Here?s new manager Dale Sveum, who spoke Wednesday with?Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com:

?I don?t know all the details of all of it.?Right now, it?s what it is, and I think it?s being taken care of in the (proper) avenues, but I don?t think it?s going to affect him at all. The one thing is that these are grown men. I?ve raised children, and sometimes you do have to treat players like they are your children. Sometimes guys get misled and they don?t know (how) to handle the off-field activities, so to speak, especially when you?re in a big city like Chicago.?

Castro batted .307/.341/.432 with 10 home runs, 66 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 158 games last year for the Cubs. He also became the youngest player in franchise history to amass more than 200 hits in a season.

Merkel, Sarkozy stress growth a priority in crisis (AP)

BERLIN ? The French and German leaders are stressing that they view boosting economic growth a priority as they push through with efforts to stem the eurozone's debt crisis.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Nicolas Sarkozy said Monday that Europe should compare countries' labor market practices and learn from the best; and they called for European funds to be used in a way that create jobs.

Both leaders also said they're prepared to consider speeding up payments into the 17-nation eurozone's permanent rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism, in an effort to bolster confidence.

They're calling for a quick conclusion to negotiations on a new treaty enshrining fiscal rules.

Still, Merkel says that resolving the crisis will be "step-by-step ... there's no single-dimension solution."

Egyptian fugitive causes stir at London lecture (AP)

LONDON ? A former Egyptian finance minister sought on corruption charges has been able to escape an angry crowd at the London School of Economics with the help of the school's security team.

The LSE says Youssef Boutros Ghali attended a public lecture Monday night and was helped out a side door after his presence prompted a hostile response.

The school said in a statement Tuesday it was acting out of a concern for public safety. It says security personnel notified London police about Boutros Ghali's presence.

The 59-year-old Boutros Ghali lives openly in London but is being sought by Egyptian authorities on criminal fraud charges. He served under former President Hosni Mubarak, whose regime was toppled last year.
