Aircraft company could create 600 jobs in Superior

The city of Superior could land an aircraft production facility with the potential of creating up to 600 jobs, according to a St. Paul Pioneer Press report.

The Pioneer Press is reporting that Kestral Aircraft Co., a firm led by Alan Klapmeier, the founder of Duluth, Minn.-based Cirrus Aviation, is negotiating with city officials and with the state of Wisconsin about locating a plant in Superior. Kestrel is seeking a location to manufacture a single-engine turboprop.

A possible development agreement will be the subject of a public hearing Jan. 16 of the city's Redevelopment Authority. A formal announcement is possible in the coming weeks but no deal has been finalized, Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen told the Pioneer Press.

The plant is expected to initially create 300 jobs with the potential for up to 300 more by 2016.
